Project Ultimate -> The Body Thread

On top of my other two projects, I thought I would try something (slightly)less mechanically minded. I found a model I wanted to use at my local hobby, its a cool looking import, haven't seen one of these built up as an xmod so i figured it was time. The body is a JDM Toyota Carina ED. Nothing too special, but with the right paint, wheels, and attention to detail, I'm sure the car will be pretty sweet. I'm going to go with a JDM style; simple, clean, one colored body, with a few little tweaks. The tweeks are gonna come from a custom grille and some subtle putty work in the form of a wide body kit. This one is gonna take me a while. I want to do it right, and I've never worked with putty before (i plan on experimenting with an old rsx body first). I've included a little teaser pic and as you can see, I'm gonna need to do some chasis lengthening and figure out how to deal with the driveshaft issue of extending a Gen1 chasis (already have a few ideas though).

I wanna hear your ideas, thoughts, comments, etc. I'll keep this thread updated as I go, but for now just wanted to let you all know what I'm up to this fall.

oh dude please not on a gen1 that body looks so sweet and you shouldn't cut it to make it fit on a gen1

IM not sure but i think what you said contradict yourslef...

EDJ the only comment i have is that that is one giant box for a model car...

the project looks sweet ver unique.

for the drivetrain issue, if you wanted to just have rwd you can just do the driveshaft delete. Or you can get some carbon fiber rods and cut them to size. Nice looking model, cant wait to see it finished!

well since i'm in canada, i really only have "easy" access to gen1's, and even they are hard to come by now. I haven't been able to find a new one to use for this project, so I fear I may have to sacrifice the corvette chasis for this project, or maybe the NSX chasis, not sure yet.

i mostly want to do the driveshaft delete, I'm not terribly interested in finding a piece of CF rod, although that would be the easy way to go if i could find some stuff in the right size. anyone have specific dimensions, as far as diameter is concerned to clear the bearings?

ha yeah, they gotta do their job as shelf queens once in a while... bout all they're good for.

anyways, i decided to go with the NSX as the donor chasis, should be a good base to start with: spinbrush motor, bearings, topcad wheels, sticky rubber, lock nuts, suspension, tight turns.

looks a lil too big for ur chasis, but i bet u can fix that. got any ideas on color or rims?

yeah kinda need to do a chasis extension. shouldnt take too much work. umm colors? not sure yet. something classy, a little bit loud. kinda thinking a gold metal flake base with a dark green clear over top, or maybe metallic silver base with the green clear. I have a set of black 7 spoke TOPCAD wheels that are gonna look really good.

UPDATE!

So I started some work on the car. I decided not to do putty because my wheel offset isn't going to be big enough, so I'm going to just leave that alone. I've got my base coats for the color on, right now im the pics you see gold, which after curing for a day or two i'm going to wetsand and then shoot another layer of gold and then wetsand, and cover in a candy green clear. I've also got a couple pics of my "paint booth", a couple mini fans a box and some paper, actually works really well.

not yet... i decided to skip the wetsanding... it looked pretty good so i just skipped and started with the green clean, so far it looks decent, but at least another coat before its good. then that will sit for a couple days and then i'll mask out all the details, and probably do those in a gloss black.

Been a couple days and I got an update!

Got the final color figured out, looks good, but these pictures don't do it justice. The real color is actually a very bright, brilliant green, and it looks fantastic. I haven't masked off the trim or anything yet, I want to wait at least another day before putting tape on the body just to be sure it doesn't pull up anywhere. These are the wheels I will be using with the car, although I haven't quite figured out the ride height yet, but it will be close to what is shown in the mock up.
