Default One off metal gear...

It's part of another project, but I thought it was off-topic enough to warrant it's own thread.

The original plastic pinion pressed into the sculpting putty.

The freshly baked sculpting putty.

The freshly baked sculpting putty from another angle.

4% Silver Solder poured into the mold and pressed.

The raw casting with the mold.

A raw metal casting of the gear.

After trimming the excess off the raw casting, this is whats left. Still needs some work, but my ADD was kicking in.

More info to come, but I felt like sharing...

Do you find the solder to be strong enough to withstand the normal pressure of any other gear? I find even metal gears (aluminum/steel) become stripped and warped after normal circumstances; I'll be amazed if this "silver-solder" gear will be able to undergo the same environment without deforming.

Certainly an ingenious concept, however. Way to use your 'noggin, imstock.

For the final version I will be using a particularly strong solder that we purchased a few years back. I wont get into details but if you solder two aluminum cans together a three points with this solder you can not seperate them by hand. Good stuff.

The final version will be deeper and will be trimmed using a belt sander.

Using a drillpress to tap the hole in the center slightly smaller then the shaft it will be attached to. Braze the shaft and press is into the gear. When it cools it will be snug.
