Default Styrene Sheets for chassis?

Guys. As you guys may know i am putting a hs-55 into an evo car. I got it to work but it didn't steer far enough. While i was working on the car and trying to find a way to make it fit a wire broke off, so now i have a broken hs-55. I only soldered 2 wires so i am good. i need a new servo tho. I am thinking of making a chassis to get it to work. I have tried aluminium and it doesn't work too well.

so the ? is: how thick of a sheet of styrene should i use to make a chassis? the purpose: to get the hs-55 to work. It will be on 4.8 volts and a hand wound motor, so not crazy fast. I know for a fact i have 3, 4, 6, 8 or 9 mm thickness around me and some crazy thin sheets.

thanks,
fieldfairy2

I would go with with something around 5 mm, because you don't want it too thick. The thicker it is the harder it is to cut and work with. You could measure the evo chassis' thickness and figure out which thickness to use that way.

ok guys i got my styrene. i got it thick enough so it doesn't bend but can still work with it along with a new hs-55 servo.(other broke)

what would be the best way to cut styrene?

thanks

Depending on the thickness, You might wanna go with a dremel and a hacksaw.
Or if its thin, you can easily cut with an X-acto

I use an X-acto knife with the blade heated by a candle, it makes it easier to cut. I also use a Dremel for long, straight cuts.

Thanks. I asked the guy at the store he sad a saw because "blah blah blah, because the razor blade is a wedged cut.." He tried to sound like he knew what to do.. it was funny.

I have the template made now i need to drill and cut. I am going to use the dremmel. I believe i got like 4-5 mm and a 3mm. THe problems: getting the batteries, the board and the servo to not get in the way of each other. For right now no awd but i might because this might be my track car.. I'll update my "hs-55 servo swap to evo?" thread.

Lay out everything (ESC, electronics, batteries, etc.) on the styrene first and mark where you need to cut with a Sharpie. Lay out everything again and finalize the design.

good point. but i don't know which way i am going to get it to steer the best directly next to it use a servo arm... stuff like that. I might do some liths in the future.

Try using a servo horn, like the one on the Gen. 1's.

That is my second idea. Using a servo horn. I am going to try something else that might reserve a little more space.

use the little ball-joint adjustable tierods that come with micro-t's for the steering. i'm thinkin' of doing that with my evo truck and extending the suspension outwards like a truggy lol
stuff likt this works better on hobby grade( aka your hs55)

Hey not to be thread jacking, but i'm thinking of making a styrene chassis too (thanks for the idea). I'm thinking running a faster motor and mounting it right on the styrene. Will the styrene melt? Is there i heat sink i could use to cool the motor before the heat gets to the styrene? thanks

prolly would get sticky, but not melt, seeing as the crappy xmods plastic can stand up to my modified motor under strain of carpet racing
just have to make a custom motor mount on that styrene (like a "U" shape with strips of styrene) and then you can run both 130 size and 180 size motors that way...i guess

that's fine i don't care. Your welcome. I think it depends on the motor and the batteries. How hot would it get in a regular xmod? i really don't know but just incase paint the chassis black(or whatever color to match electrical tape) and radpe electrical tape or heat reisitant(high heat resistant) tape around the styrene where the motor will be and make a custom aluminum heat sink. THe aluminum should take away 40-70 percent of the heat. Hope this helps.

Still cutting the chassis to fit perfectly...

thanks so much. I'll probably using styrene for my ultimate xmod project. thanks again!

Your welcome. CAn you give me(us) more detail about your Ultimate xmods project...

since we are kind of talking about motors does any one know if atomicmods sells magnets with their m1 can. there is no description and i can't tell from the picture:
http://www.atomicmods.com/Products/A...l)__13636.aspx

thanks guys.

Edit: I might not need the chassis for this car after all(i wanted rechargeable batts, on the hs-55) i am waiting for the soldering iron to heat up.... I used the hs-55's long horn gear thing and i drilled the second hole from the bottom bigger and i put the smallest screw i had and screwed it in place. THen i went to the tierod and cut out the back of th thingy ma gig(that connects to the smallwhite gear thing) I had to take off the back of the servo case so the 2 screws to the top of th board arn't there. I am going to test it out. IT sounds confusing(i can't explain....) but it took me about 2 mins.

Alright, heres the lowdown. For my ultimate xmod project, i will use thick styrene for a flat bottom chassis. On that, i will mount a hobby grade servo, RC18 electronics, and cut up the rear gearbox to mount the motor lower in the car. Then i'll put on some nice and wide Derlin wheels and some nice glued tires. I'll put on a pancar body and use a RC18 remote. The ultimate carpet racer!

Ahh i see. Sounds cool. Good luck. You posted right before i edited my post. Sounds awesome. I kind of want to do a pan car... Any idea about the motor?(above, link)

just to throw this out there...if you go to Lowe's, there's a soldering iron that comes with a head that accepts Xacto knife blades, it would be ideal for cutting styrene and would probably save somebody lots of time. The burnzomatic (sp) gas soldering iron also comes with a knife attachment, but it's not as sharp as the one that comes with the electric one mentioned above (the electric one would be better for fine cuts)
