Alienware = overhyped Dell (and yes, it is owned by Dell)

Sony Vaios are reasonably okay. They're very delicate though. I work at a computer repair+build shop and we get in at least 7-8 Vaios a week.

I'd suggest something along the lines of an Acer Aspire.

How much experience do you have with Apple's Macs? They can surprise you.

well for one thing the macs are not fully capatible with alot of stuff that you can do on windows.

also i used to photograph for fun, and the books did recomend mac over pc for ther superior ability for graphics editing, if i were to choose id get a pc. people in my school brought ther mac to school and some cant even use jump drive...so you see popularity is a big problem

Macs are nice if you doing serious graphic applications or you're a college yuppie trying to be cool. As far as windows based brands go it's not so much the brand name as the components that make it work. All the major brands pretty much use the same stuff, ie hard drive, chipset, optical drives, ram etc. so do your research. I paid 800 for my laptop from Dell outlet and the same machine brand new at the time (sept 2005) was going for about 1600. It's been very good to me. It was only 800 because someone had returned it before their 30days were up. Anyway if you're buying new look at what warranties are offered. Good luck with your purchase.
