It's called the mosquito noise.
As you get older, your hearing gets worse, and in turn older people can't hear it.
So, people use it as a ringtone for reasons:
1. tick off classmates
2. hear your phone without your teacher hearing it

however, I had one teacher than was like 55 and could hear it..

yeah its true your hearing gets worse. that noise is outside supermarkets at night to keep teenagers away but its been proven that from 30-35 onwards you can't hear it anymore.

i can here it... i am 35 so i guess i am special...oh and my dog and cats all just bugged out so i figured they could hear it to...the dog freaked BTW

Im almost 26 and it was terribly annoying. I'm skeptical if older people cant hear it. I'll try it on my stepdad and mom.

I could just hear it a little annoying not painful. Im 28 but my ears are not the best due to my line of work.

Sorry to tell you, working with a grinder to much has pinched my earing, and has made me deft to high pitch noises and freq. I blame being a mechanic and not wearing ear protection.

So, no I cannot hear it.

reminds me of sound grenade on an ipod. everybody thinks they are cool for useing it. i can hear it fine but it doesnt bother me
