I think though that we have kind of turned into a hobby grade now everyone is making their own bodies for them, customizing the chassis beyond what RS supplies.
Yah, people have made the Gen1's hobby grade, but the custom chassis beyond RS isn't new. You can get aftermarket stuff for most Hobby Grade cars. But that sinister Gen1 is deffinately hobby grade.

You can convert it to full electronics and all, but it won't be hobby grade, it will sit just below the line. Even then, you can tell a diffrence. Now, I haven't driven and Evo with the full GPM Driveline and gears and such, but that's alot of money to drop into it just to get it to roll smooth.

I don't think they're hobby-grade, after driving a mini-z they are a toy. If you mod the heck out of them then they might be considered hobby-grade.

toy grade unless you go all out aluminnum and hobby electronics. mostly though, the thing that keeps it from being hobbey grade is elecs and suspension. anybody know where to buy the little ball stubs to pop a set of radline aluminum shocks on my truck?

but no matter. they're toy grade if you don't spend a fortune building it up from parts

If Xmods had the ability to upgrade the TX, then that would be significantly "closer" to to a hobby grade (among other things).

I just purchased the mini-z 2.4ghz system and the TX is ridiculously smooth!! Made me realize how clunky the Xmod TX is. I can still turn some impressive laps with each.

I also upgraded my Gen 1 to full GPM aluminum. It made a difference in the predictability of the car. Comes-out of the corners and runs the straights much more reliable.
