My first hobbygrade

Well, here I am. My first project here at XMS! Lately, things have been boring. I'm currently off for regents week (a week of various citywide tests) as I didn't have to take any tests. My main project hasn't even begun as I'm awaiting for some gpm from china and merced3s' old track car which I bought off ebay (I have a slew of ideas, and some awesome parts, such as a custom CF chassis by TripleXmodder just waiting for application).

I've noticed I never messed with a Gen 1 chassis since I came back into the xmod world, as I've only been dealing with EVO's as of late. I really miss the old chassis, so I pulled out my favorite gen 1 chassis which I was using as a roller. Meet my victim: (sorry for the quality, the pics were taken with my iPhone's camera, which seems to be the phone's only weakpoint, lol.)



The board is modded with tight turns, but not like that matters, as I'm tossing those electronics aside.

Well, what do we have here?


So I picked up Micro T elecs for a project, 42$ in total, including everything you see in that picture. I'm not using those elecs for my main project, and instead will use the mini z elecs that will come with merced3's car. Thus, here we are. A Micro T project inspired by the likes of WhiteCharisma and all the others like Zippo who have used these elecs in the past. This is my first major project, hopefully it turns out good.

I started the teardown. This is what I got done in 2 minutes... If only the reassembly will be that fast.


Next was to test fit the servo. It seems like a good place to put it, although plans of 4WD are now gone.


Lastly, before I post, I think the micro T board will fit perfect right atop the chassis. I may change the positioning, sooner or later.


Suggestions? Comments? Anything is welcome

Sweet job but since it's an XMOD, technically it is NOT hobby grade even if the electronics are. Be careful not to strain the motor being so small. Also if you are going to go LiPo, be careful, I went through plenty of motor like that, that's why my Micro DT is BL now :P.

I meant hobbygrade as in the electronics. Maybe I should have put hobbygrade conversion as my title :/
I have a Redmade motor that I probably might use for a while. And I'm not sure about batteries, but most likely LiPo because its lightweight and super easy to mount.

Yeah like I said, just be careful, use throttle control or you will start burning out motors. Don't make the same mistake that I did. LiPo is a great thing but it can be a hazard to your motors(unless you use BL then in a Micro DT, try to keep the front down)

just to let you know you can mount the servo standing up and have a soming comeing down from the arm to the tie rod that way you can have awd and more room

Yeah, I was messing with the servo horn and now I got the servo standing vertically. It looks just like the normal gen 1 setup. Problem is, its going to turn out as a near carbon clone of WhiteCharisma's gen 1 Micro T conversion.

so what? his gen1 was pretty sweet
so why not use a proven way?
a caution, the clear chassis will crack more easily than the normal tan chassis.
normal clear plastic just isn't really strong
lexan is, but that's because it's a totally different polymer
use the normal battery holders. just glue them so they're a bit lower like WC's

I am using it in his way. Its a similar setup to goodfellaz from XMF too. I know the clear plastic isn't strong, but I really don't do any hardcore racing. I only have about 15 feet to race in.



So theres the servo looking nice, mounted in its new location. Everything has been smooth so far.

Put her on the dyno. Seems good to me This is pretty good seeing as I never tried to achieve this speed. I've fixed up both of my cousins with similar setups on evo chassis and yet they only hit 30 KPH on the dyno. This is about 21 MPH.

a decent speed for tracking.
any faster, and you'll have trouble turning without crashes

not to bad... you said your getting gpm right? cuz your going to shatter those cups...

I'm not too sure on GPM, no money leftover from my evo projects. Maybe in a month or so.

you should at least try and get the gpm cups and knucles.. especilly if your racing in a small area

Any idea of where I can find some silver knuckles for a small price?

Anyway, the car is totally awesome, I can't believe how long I've put up with the stock xmod board. Best part is I can fit an RSX body on the chassis. I'll get some pics later, my antennae broke off and I'm going to solder it right now.

Its a stage 2 with a 10 tooth pinion. Maybe down the line I'd opt for something more powerful, either by redsx or xmd since the stock micro t board has a 2x2 stack.

hobby grade RC is not from RS/Circuit city, they are generally a RC toy.
