Default And so it ends: project trailer queen

So, ever since stumbling across a couple pics of people posing their xmods on little trailers, I wanted one. one that worked, and could be pulled behind another xmod.

Found a 1:24 scale die-cast trailer that sounded like the dimensions should work with all of my xmods (including, and especially, the hummer), but I still needed a tow rig

So I decided that an F150 was in order. but I hate fords, so I needed a different fullsize. I wanted a suburban, but couldn't find one. So I bought this:

I got it home, pulled it out, and held it up to my new F150 chassis. ****, almost an inch too long!!

I'd thought about lengthening the chassis with spacers, but an inch...that was too much.

So i decided to make a shortbox. First, I cut out the inside of the bed to make room for the chassis. And then proceded to cut out the necessary length from the sides of the bed, just in front of the wheel wells. I got out my QuikPlastik, and started re-attaching. As well as filling the hole in the hood (it's just a tow rig, doesn't need 3 carbs sticking up out of it).

Here's what it looks like, propped up over the chassis:

and all the pieces, so far, you can see the 2 little chunks I took out of the sides of the bed, the hood, and what was the bottom of the bed, and will become the tonneau cover:

and, now I've got a set of monstrous tires, don't think I'll use them though, so I might just sell them.

I picked up some dark blue testors spray paint with it. and plan on using that for the body. The only problem with that, is I'd like to use the Chevy decals that came with the truck, and they're all black....so I might have to rethink. but it's not going to be flashy, and I don't want it to look custom. even though it is....hehehe

I'll probably use the offroad upgrade wheels and tires, since these wheel wells are so big, those stock tires just don't fill 'em.

and the trailer will be able to hold anything, from my big *** Hummer, to my WRX drift car, to my RSX AutoX car, to my Subaru brat

I already dropped my hybrid stage 2 motor I built for the hummer, until I got the 180 to fit. ball bearing case and neo magnets added to a RS stage 2 motor. it's got plenty of torque!

I can barely control it without some extra weight on the rear, so I'll have to make sure there's lots of tongue weight on the trailer, as well as really hard springs on the back.

Thanks man, I intend to!

Here's the trailer I'm planning on getting:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEBI%3AIT&rd=1

If the deck really is only 3" wide, the Hummer's tires are going to hang over the sides, lol. it'll need wide load stickers!

That seller has many others, so please, don't bid on this one....get your own

progress.

sanded the sides of the bed down, as well as the hood. Also filled in the holes on what will be the tonneau.

The body is still propped up there, I ordered a hummer front body clip, which will work much better with this body. and I will start work tomorrow on the rear body clip. as well as the front bumper (FUGLY), and a few other things.

OK, change in plans. it is going to look custom. I had trouble making the trim match in the putty....got sanded off, and I'm not going to try to recreate it. so I've decided to fill in all the trim/lines on the sides. and sand it all completely smooth, as well as remove the door handle.

and I've got to figure something out for a front bumper!! Look at the one on the box, it looks OK on a monster truck, but hidious on a regular truck!

I'm off to work.

OK, back. Did some work, finished the tonneau, and tacked it in place.

finished filling the molding etc. on the sides.

more pics:

tomorrow I think I'll start working on the body mounts (looked at it today, but then I didn't want to mess with it until the epoxy holding the tonneau was hard), since my new alloy H2 body mount should be here on wednesday, so I won't be needing it's stock plastic one.

take a flat peice of plastic an wrap it around the front end, the add some kind of definition with putt an you have your front bumper, you could just make it look like the front bumper was erased an then add a roll pan to the rear end an then black out the grill an make it look like the 454 ss version paint the whole truck black, that would look nice

ok, you've got dibs on the tires, assuming I sell them. I looked at them today, and it looks like it could be very easily mounted to the car wheels.

And yes, you can see how I mounted it. look under the back bumper, see that chunk of plastic? That's it, for now.

actually, last night I went and cannablized the F150 rear body clip, and glued it to the rear of the cab on the chevy, looks like it'll work pretty well, but I'm going to add a couple screws, and some more glue/putty to beef it up.

Michaels has a stock newer silverado in a cheap, level 1 kit. I may go get that, and use it's front bumper. The rear bumper is stock for that body style.

EDIT: screw the ankle, I worked on it anyway!!!

Got the body mounted solid!

cut a bunch of material off the rear clip from the F150. then screwed it to the back of the cab on the 1500:

The stock F150 front body tab fit perfectly between the 2 posts, and the angle on the rear clip pulled the front up slightly, so I just screwed a plate across the bottom of it:

only problem was, the tab needed to be up where the hummer tab was. so I ordered a GPM alloy one for the hummer, and cut the tab off the F150 plate, and screwed it onto the Hummer one:

it's a little crooked for some reason, the left side sits a bit lower than the right....I'm not sure why, but i might just modify the suspension to fix that.

also found a piece in the kit that looks like a front air dam. it's not listed in the instructions, but it matches the shape of the front of the truck perfectly, so I'm going to start putting putty on it so I can shape it into the front bumper.

I also trimmed the roll bar that came with it so that it will sit on top of the tonneau and still line up with the top of the cab. Pic:
