I finally got it, FWD Civic!
Well those of you who don't remember (everyone on the site most likely) I was on a quest for a tire smokin' front wheel drive civic. After reading what people had to say about it, and listening to different how-to's, I finally got my very own FWD Civic.
The real kicker was that I ordered an AWD kit off Ebay, since my civic is the blasted Gen 1, and I ended up waiting a month and a half for it to get found in the mail system. (Certian curses are thusly offered toward certian cities.) It finally is a reality however, and here's the rundown. Cons. 1) Slight loss of speed. It isn't turning the back tires or diff. (and I got rid of the rear driveshafts all together) so there is not as much drag as when it is AWD. But it is slower. 2) If handled improperly, or improperly setup it drastically understeers. This can be fixed with different tires, suspension, and a knowledge of accel. decel. forces in turns. (i.e. you try and decelerate in a turn the front wheels skid and no turn happens. I've seen this in my real Civic too.) Pros. 1) Drammatically improved directional control. The running surface dosn't matter, if you crank on the power it will go straight (provided the two front tires are gaining the same ammount of traction.) If you have traction problems you can lock the front diff. or get better tires. 2) Adding power in turns improves turning radius. Simple, slam the gas and shap through the turn. 3) It's a civic...they are supposed to be FWD. 4) Peeling out with the front tires. (I plan on posting pictures of this, it's just that cool.) 5) The nerdy feeling of accomplishment for doing something so rediculous!

In my Ofna Hyper10 nitro touring car (which is AWD anyhow) i broke a CVD making the car a 2WD, this made the car handle like crap and hard to control. After a few weeks of driving this way until my new part came in i realized how much AWD made this car really move ,drive and handle....
my point is FWD is a waste of time, to keep the car moving at a high rate of power/speed you need the AWD no matter what the scale of RC. |

Answer to Gearhead
In answer to Gearhead's question about performance preferance I'd have to say it depends.
If I were to go head-to-head with someone else that had RWD and otherwise the same setup it would be all about drive surface. Normally I run on a wood gym floor, which is mad slick and hard to control. The FWD keeps me perfectly straight (and so would AWD, but I'm running the origional batteries still so it slows me down a bit) and dosn't seem to really loose anything for torque. Now if it hit it on a good track, circut, or even a tennis court I think a RWD car would eat me for breakfast. The major point here is that I'm a purist, and frankly I can't stand seeing a civic burn the back wheels. Maybe I'll just have to buy a Skyline body....then I could justify the AWD. Ohh...and yes, eventually I'll have pics of this. I plan to snap one of it off the line burnin' the fronts! (Camera issues) Sporkhammer

Spork, a little baby powder and a low camera angle make for some great XMOD tire smoke pictures.
I think where you're losing the HP is through the driveshaft, even though it's a hard link you're still translating the power through those extra gears to get it to the front. Those extra gears use up just that much more inertia, and therefore you lose power. If it were possible to get a perfect gear mesh (helical gears would be great) where there was virtually no play you could lower that moment of inertia and get some of your loss recovered. FWD is a matter of taste, just like AWD in a Mustang or a Supra. If you can drive it, mo' power too ya.

I like the idea of having the front wheel drive in the civic, it gives it a more realistic detail. I mean if all skylines came with AWD then I would pretty much force myself to buy the AWD kit for my drag skyline (thankfully Nissan did have rwd ones) that or find a new drag car. but hey way to go cause if thats what ya like go for it.
