I have been wandering this as well. Has anyone tried the bettery powered sodering iron on TV. It looks like it would work, and if so can you use it to de-solder?

The ColdHeat soldering iron is not good for sensitive electronics. It uses resistance to heat things up, which means there's a stray voltage and if you move the iron off the joint with the button still down, an arch can happen.

Default The iron that I use

I use the 30 watt iron from RS... long thin tip, and rosin flux makes the whole experience SO EASY...

snap on and I'm sure other companies have a cordless butane solder iron with changeable tips and also a blow gun tip. It works realy well and it read to run in about 30 secs. But I would only recomed this gun if you plan to do other work with your iron too. It is good for under dash wires on cars and soldering in hard to reach areas. All so there is a silver solder paste alavible in a suringe. dap a little on the two materias and heat tehm up. rember the solder and flux will flow to the heat. Then clean up the slag and reveale a shinny connection. Also avalible is gold solder but I don't think you will in that good of a connection.

After shipping costs, it'd cost about 20 bucks. Buy a basic 15-30 watt iron from Radio Shack.

Edit: Almost forgot, the Cold Heat on TV fries electronics easily.

Buy a soldering iron between 15-30 watts, and buy desoldering braid, and if the iron doesn't come with solder, buy ROSIN-CORE solder, which is the only kind RS should have, but make sure.

I believe the 40 watt I find is a little too hot. Try and take it back, and explain it was a bad recommendation. Stick with a 15-30 (15's a little more preferable).
