Default Project: MAX MADNESS

this is my sons first project.
most of the time max is my shadow when i'm in the garage toolin' around and yesterday was no exception.
the difference in yesterday is that he told me he wanted to paint like i do.
he's been driving Xmods since before he could walk and of course he's seen all of mine so i wasn't that suprised.
he has an F150 and my old RSX for beaters and he's been beating em up for a few years now so i thought maybe a project would be a good father son thing to do for fathers day and give him something to beat up that he did himself.

i rummaged through my stash and found a hummer that i'd prepped and primed awile ago but i threw it back in the box because we moved.
perfect.
i kinda figured going into this that it would be a complete waste of a perfectly good hummer but if it makes him happy and he's willing to learn something then i'm all for it.

here's what he started with.(in primer from before)

i pulled out a new shell so i could show him the steps on mine and he could do the same on his.
he pulled out his spongebob table for a workbench, grabbed a towel and the bit of paper i cut for em and was ready to go.
so we wetsanded for about an hour(mine took about 15 minutes...)
and then i gave him some pointers on rattlecan paint and made him practice a few sweeps on a box, handed him the can of primer and let him go to town.
i was expecting a drippy blob of primer................

WTF????????
the kids first time with a spray can in his hand and he does that?^^^^^^^^^^
oh yeah,did i mention he's only four?
granted, there was a handful of runs but they were pretty minimal for the most part.
there was 2 on the roof in the bracing,a nice run along the drivers side,a couple on the pass. side and the hood/windshield was pretty thick but still........i was expecting dripping....

so we let it dry until today then i pointed out all of his runs, explained why they happened and what we had to do to fix 'em.
he actually got excited about having to wetsand the runs out.........(me starts to re-think that paternity test)...........

so we started wetsanding, i didn't have any runs in mine so i had to show him what to do on his.

it took him about an hour to sand the runs out but he got them all back to smooth without burning through too bad so i taped up the windows for him and shook his paint thinking,"this is where it get's messy".

had him take a few more practice sweeps and let em loose.
this time around he was so worried about makings runs that the 2 coats he put on took a whole can of paint because he was so far away(i guess he does'nt like wetsanding after all.....HE IS MY SON!! ) but i'll be ****ed if he did'nt lay down a **** nice coat of paint.

and one proud boy showing off his work.(he hasn't shut up about it)

there's still a couple runs here and there even though the pics don't show em very well but still, i've seen worse from forum members 4x his age.

the ONLY thing i did on this truck was sand off one of the runs and mask the windows for him since i don't fully trust my own spawn with sharp objects....

here's where we stand after the tape.
i just kinda slapped the masking on because like i said, i thought this was going to be a blob of paint at the end.
if i would have know all of this i would have taped em a bit better...

tomorrow should be the day for clear so there's still a bit that could go wrong.
regardless of the final outcome, you're looking at one proud papa.

UPDATE:
we got back out the the garage today and max wetsanded his paint and went for the clear.
still lookin pretty decent eh?

here's the start of Max Madness #2.
just another one of my muck ups........
sanded down and ready for primer.

i think this one will be a joint project between us.
i'll let him lay down the paint but i think imma airbrush it a bit.
cheers,

well yea, it's natural to underestimate a 4yr old with a can of spraypaint and an Xmod conscidering mostly what i've seen is teens+.
seriously, how many of you held a can of spraypaint at 4 with permission?
i know i didn't.
i grabbed my first can at about 9 or so and i think i still have the belt marks on my ***.

i may have underestimated him but i can't even describe how proud i am.

thanks again guys.
your words mean alot to both me and him.
(he's so geeked to see his truck on daddy's computer)

Wow, he did a great job. You're a lucky guy, I can't wait until my boys are old enough to just race with me. All they want to do now is chase them around and try to step on them.

you would'nt believe how good this makes both of us feel.
he's loving it because he's finally able to work in daddy's shop with him and i'm loving it for that and about 10 other reasons.
other then karate and video games,he hasn't really shown too much interest in anything other then school and playing wich is normal for a 4 year old bit i'm tickled pink that he's keen to learn about what he's doing while doing it.
espescially at such a young age.

thanks guys.

just take your time and practice.
when i handed max the hummer he had the natural response to want to go straight for the can and paint the hell out it.
i had to explain to him that there were a few things he had to do first if he wanted it to look good.

basic painting is easy as hell with practice.
the hard part is gaining the patience to let it do it's thing.
every (i hate to use this term but for lack of a better word)"bad" paintjob i've seen has pretty much been because the painter got too anxious and either
A: skipped/cheated the preperations
B: applied the coats too thick because they wanted to see it done NOW
C: didn't take the time to practice their coats on scrap.
D: any combination of A,B and C

thanks,
max stood up and started walking on his first b-day,i put a controller in his hand the next day.
dont get me wrong though,he isn't exactly the best driver, even after 3 years of practice but he has his own truck for carpet bashing and he does well with that.
believe it or not,he only killed the range on three boards before he learned to keep the arial up.
how old are your boys btw?

hopefully i can squeeze in some time today to get him out there for the clearcoat.

thanks again guys

ive got a few of em and one does clog up but it was the cheapest of the three.
the one max is using above was about $6.00 and has a really wide opening compared to the other two i own.
but yea,you can get em at auto parts stores.
they're real good if you have ALOT of surface to cover.
poor max's finger was **** near blue after the primer shot without it so i hooked em up for the paint and the cear.

maybe i'll make him paint up the ford for the july comp to win daddy $100
technically it would qualify.....
