Never before seen chasis for gen1 xmods!
I have been desperately searching for a metal (Titanium or Aluminum) chasis to finish of my subaru drifter/show project. many of you have seen the progress of this car and its very nearly finished, just the new chasis and then its all finished. But I haven't been able to find something suitable. Atomicmods doesnt seem to carry the switchblade anymore, xmodsinternational is still waiting on their order of chasis for whatever reason, and ebay is too expensive.
So, I came up with a solution, because you know they say, if no one else can do it right, do it yourself. I spent most of today sketching and then drawing a new chasis design using Autocad, a simple program I know, but it did the trick. I will be getting ahold of a Laser cutting company in the next couple of days, likely tomorrow, to talk about pricing, production, etc. I am just going to get one chasis made up front, to test fit and finish, and if I like the results I am going to order another 10-15 to sell to you guys and on ebay if everyone seems to like it. The chasis can be used with medium and long gen1 cars, and uses the stock black rear bottom deck. Using the stock rear bottom deck simplifies the design a lot and will help to keep the cars geometry in good shape. It will use the stock hardware (or the GPM hardware if thats what you have) to keep things simple. The upper deck mounts will be 1/8" polystyrene tubing and the chasis itself will be either 6061 T6 Aluminum or some Titanium alloy, depending on what the Laser Cutter's have in stock (special order alloys would cost extra). Anyways, I call the chasis "The Spyder". I haven't calculated the estimated weight, I'm too lazy for that, but it should be very lightweight, stiff and strong. Here's the design, tell me what you think, would you buy it? This is the top view the front of the chasis is at the bottom of the picture.

At the moment, it looks better than many of those other Gen1 aftermarket chassis out there. I'd be interested if you were able to integrate hobby-grade electronics in it.
But otherwise, make a front top plate and rear top plate, and heck yeah I'd buy! |

Nice! You make it out of CF or Titanium or some other really cool piece of metal I would buy at least one from you!

How about integrating pan chassis designs into a Gen 1 Xmod. I'd buy that for sure. Good work though. Later, RedSXmodder |

I did talk to the people today but I have decided on a couple changes, the biggest one being material. Titanium would be too expensive to bring in, the shop did not have it in stock. Carbon fiber would be an alternative, but the design would have to be altered to create less open space, this design in CF would be too fragile. I have decided to go with a 5052 H18 or a 5054 H18 Aluminum alloy, it has a good strength and is a very tough material and will perform well for this application. This material was recommended by my Materials for Technology instructor, who spent a lot of time working in an aluminum smelting plant and knows pretty much everything there is to know about aluminum and its alloys, so I'm going to take his word for now.
I am also in the process of designing front and rear upper decks, I'll update with some pics once I get the drawings done. Then all that's left to do is email my drawings to the company and wait for a quote. Thanks for the comments guys and keep 'em coming!

yeah thats alright, that would be more work than drawing it, its being laser cut out of 1 mm sheet aluminum so the the 3D image wouldnt be that exciting, anyways, I have drawings for the front and rear upper deck finished so let me know what you think!

the front deck has a sort of logo, its the name of the chasis, "SPYDER". its written in the negative but you should be able to see what it says.

Not to say that they look bad, which they don't, they look awesome and about roughly 5x out of my league of creation, but I've noticed that its kinda hard to do front and rear decks without it/them looking identical to some other design out there.
I just don't know how you did it... Later, RedSXmodder |
