Default Exposed Flywheel?

This might be a stupid question, but I am no mechanic. Should my flywheel be exposed like this? I would think it could be potentially dangerous, exposing it to dirt, crud, rocks, etc.

I would say no and it looks like part of the case is missing / damaged but unfortunately I'm not expert either, someone like tex should be able to give you a quick answer.

Looks like your missing your Transmission bellhousing!

You pretty much answered your own question in your post, the bell housing is meant to protect the flywheel & clutch/Flex plate & Torque Converter.

It also is able to come off of the transmission, by a couple of bolts, so you can unbolt the flexplate/flywheel from the clutch/torque converter.

You might want to replace that.

Blade.

I have seen cars where the bellhousing won't cover the whole flywheel but that's mostly imports

there should be a dust cover at the bottom of most transmissions housings. but it does look like part of the bell housing is missing / damaged
can you get a few more pics from different angles?

some different angles might help me. What kind of car am I looking at? Ford? It looks like the inspection cover is missing or damaged or modified for some reason. Also seeing two different torque converter bolts in the flex plate tell me someone has been hacking on that tranny, so who knows whats going on here.

But I have seen lots of modified cars going down the road like this missing the inspection cover, i would loose sleep over it but I would fix it if its possible.

Yeah the bottom of your bell housing is broken thats why the inspection cover is missing. you might beable to rig something up to cover that, other wise you will need a new transmission case, I think the bell house is part of that transmission.

Nothing to really worry about, it's very common for older cars to loose the inspection cover. All it is, is a plastic cover. Doesn't protect it much, and on a street car you'll never have a problem with it. The truck's is missing the cover too, and I've had it in flood waters, herraflush in mud, and through high-grass and brush with nothing happening. I mean, if you're doing something that's putting objects close to your fly wheel, you've got bigger worries.
