Default Is a 2.4Ghz conversion really worth it?

I came across an Xmod with a 2.4Ghz conversion on Ebay and the guy states that it is a GREAT upgrade compared to our "stock" controller - honestly, I have not really had issues with the original controller so in what ways is this 2.4Ghz better?

no crystals, which means no interference
range is probably father than u could see the car from.. and its a super fast response time, but to be honest, i dont think it is possible to do a 2.4ghz conversion without getting a a new esc

Yep, but wow that stuff adds up to some cash - think I am gonna pass on it, I thought the 2.4Ghz controllers looked cool though, especially the ones with the backlit displays hehe... oh well.

You could just put an AM board in there, it will still be a huge improvement. Plus the transmitters are only like 20-30 bucks for them used.

I have a few AM and a couple 2.4 Mini-Z and they are both great but you cant beat the new MR-03 2.4 board. Its simply awesome.

Action, can you explain what kind of drastic improvement I will see, since you have all this stuff (and you have experience with it)?

upgrading to a hobby class AM board will

1. Make your car have a much improved steering control. The steering will be more graduated, or have more fluid feel through the steering range as the hobby class board has more graduation of steering angles that can be achieved in each direction.

2. Make your car have much improved throttle control. Same as steering difference, but with throttle. Much more precise control of throttle.

3. Give you a lot more Range. You'll have a ton of it. I can drive an AM car so far I can't tell which way the car is facing.

4. Let you have your selection of transmitters. Unlike xmod boards, MIni-Z and Iwaver AM boards have a large variety of different transmitters they work with. Airtronics, Futaba, KO-Propo, heck even the team losi Micro-t transmitter I have would work. They can be cheap to expensive and have as many features as you want or don't want.

5. Give you a small Weight reduction. Xmod boards are bigger, an AM board is lighter, while 2.4 is even lighter.

6. Make your car NOT have steering "vibration" with lithium ion or polymer so commonly found in the xmods, this does not happen to Mini-Zs.

Thats the main difference, of course, the board would accept different FETs like that of the Gen.-1.

This is true! HOWEVER, these are not compatible with the same transmitters and modules that Mini-Z are. Just a side note. A couple guys tried to bind the iwaver 2.4 transmitter to the Mini-Z board and it did not work. I don't know any more details than that really.

I've found a low budget 2.4Ghz radio combo--Tactic TTX-440. I'm running a Mini-t and Cup Racer off of one controller, so now I'm gunning for the conversion in my Xmod. I considered a brushed ESC to run with the 2.4Ghz receiver as I'm pretty happy with the fairly quick motors I'm using from Eric @ Main-iac Motors, but I think it'll make for an interesting build to go brushless using an ESC/Motor combo for the Micro-T.

I think 2.4Ghz is totally worth it. I run my cars on my street where there are some high powered lines and those powerlines can cause some serious "ghost driver" action. Had my mini-t slam head on into a 6" high curb that did not end well. I used to get it on my Xmod as well.

Other bonuses of using 2.4Ghz are no protruding antenna, they are fairly small receivers, no crystal swapping, mega range, quick transmission between Rx and Tx, and probably more.

Too me that's all worth it.

how hard would it be to get a hold of a mini Z board. which one specifically do you need to get? and then just any controller or would i have to match a controller with a car?

He was trying to warn you before the wrong person did...that wrong person is me. Most of the questions that you have asked can be found by searching around the site. You did bump an old thread (this thread) and that is against the rules, so please don't do it again as this is your final warning...

I think you might want to take another look and rethink that statement if you are going to play mod...
