Default Can I blame the body shop for this?

Short story long: About a month ago, I had the car worked and painted. New Password JDM Fenders installed, aftermarket hood shaved and installed, rear squirter shaved, fenders rolled, and all the dings and dents (my doors where super wavy) filled. I was recommended to the shop by a local guy with a really, really nice looking CRX that had work done there. The shop had the car for two or three weeks. Car has base coat/clear coat paint on it, all the door/trunk jamps painted. And the underside of the hood too.

Total came to $3000, which is a bit steap, but I've seen some of his previous work, which looks amazing. I was quoted $1500-$2000 at a few other shops, but that didn't include the fender rolling (~$200). Seen work from one place that quoted me $1500, which had nice paint, but it wasn't super impressive, just a nice re-spray.

Anyways, it's been a month, I've washed it twice, and I'm noticing some random rust/paint flaking around the trunk and the hood, at the edges. As well as a dent in the rear quarter panel that appears to have been there before the paint was laid. Oh, and a few runs on the doors, and it almost looks like the edge of the door is creased. And some random raised sections on the hatch.

I plan on going to the bodyshop on Friday when I have time, I'm just wondering what you guyses opinions are. Below each picture is a link to the full sized picture (download).

Yes you can, just have them touch it up, and wet sand it where needed. 3000 is not a lot for a paint job, all in all.

Yeah, looks like someone botched the prep-work. Definitely take it back to the shop and point this stuff out.

I would say that most of this is valid to complain about.... the only ones I see a potential issue with are:



A little hard to tell from photo but kinda looks like a chip, they could argue something flew up and hit it.



Because its on and around the hatch they might argue that it doesn't sit right and the damage occurred after painting was done.

This one is just sloppy though:



Good luck and let us know the outcome, if they are a reputable shop they should just fix it but I would be interested to see if they tried to argue.

Look how the paint meets the paint, it's like raised and not level.
I'll have to go out and take a better picture of it when I get home, but it's like uneven, like a ridge. And it's not just the hatch, it's like that along the doors too.

Also, the hatch doesn't sit level on that side with the body.
Hard to see in the picture though.

i think the rust kinda comes from parking in puddles lol but i would defo try to get them to fix it, the worst that can happen is they say no..

not one of these problems is caused by "parking in puddles".

runs drips and sags,take it back and demand a fix free of charge or you will contact the BBB.

the junk your seeing around the decklid and doors is his maskline.
he kinda cheaped ya there.
most people that charge upwards of $500 for a respray will mask off on rubber/plastic seals instead of pre-painted surfaces.
that's the kinda **** youde expect from maaco or the likes.
you can complain about it but it's really up to them wether or not their going to fix it.
if any of those spots are in a worked panel, THEN you have a leg to stand on.
if they had to loosen or remove the panel bolts to paint it then you also have a leg to stand on.
if they didn't fit it properly upon re-assembely then that's their muck up.

prepwork doesn't seem to be the entire problem but it's a small contributing factor.
the fact that the rest of the paint is holding on is a good sign of decent(atleast) prepwork.
the majority of your problems are caused by the mucked up masking and improper spray patterns.

if it was me,i would demand a repaint.
if a paintjob doesn't last a month,what's the point?
IMO,that paintjob is ruined.
i could shoot a CRX in duplicolor for about $200 and have it last atleast a year before crap like that started to happen.

deffinately pitch a ***** fit

EDIT:
just looking over your thread for the car and i noticed that it looks like he's working out of a storage unit.
check to make sure he's liscensed and bonded before even saying anything.
the better buisness berau can't do jack if he isn't legal.
if he isn't legal then you're pretty much screwed.

i didn't mean going down to metal on the whole car but the repair spots are plentiful enough to warrant another go.
espescially after only a month and $3k.
what they need to do is address the problem spots,take them to metal,re-seal/prime them,use a detail gun to put a couple coats of the same white and block the rest of the car for a final complete coat of the white.
after this bull****,i'd make em buff it for free too.

if it isn't a mask line then the only other things it can be is either filler that wasn't sanded or just plain shotty prep that caused a perfect ripple down a hard edge.
in all three cases,it shouldn't be there.

What is blocking?
blocking is using a foam block with sandpaper on it to either key the surface between coats or too smooth any texture that may have resulted from a bad shot like the run you pointed out.

As for taking it up with the BBB, they have to be a member of the BBB before you can use that against them. If they aint a member (or not legal for that matter) the BBB wont do anything but blacklist them from joining the BBB.

However if they are a member, you basically have high ground over the company assuming you have a valid complaint.

not necessarily all you have to do is be a legitimate business and someone file a complaint then the BBB becomes involved. send you emails, letters, etc.

we had a guy file a complaint because he had an issue with his equipment that wasnt a warranty issue, it was a user caused problem and got ticked off because he had to pay to fix it.

looks about what they did with my car :/ 'cept mine came back with runs, and over spray under the wing, and the passenger door handle missing.

all you have to do is call.
in my teens i used to work for a man named harold miller who owned an exxon gas station/carwash.
i worked the carwash.
mr. miller was a cheapskate low life who inherited the buisness and i don't know if it was drugs or what but he started cheaping people on hours, changing timecards and refused to pay some people altogether.
anyways,a couple people got ****ed and called the BBB and when they got involved there was a full on investigation with fines and restitution for corrupt hours.
i ended up getting a grand when he'd only cheaped me on a couple hunnit and the manager ended up with almost 5k.
they issued him a buisness citation and warned that if he got another one, they were going to have his liscense revoked.
4 years later,9/11 hit....
guess who was the first schmuck in bay city to jack his gas prices up?
by noon it was up to $13 Gal.(normal for the time was about $2 give or take a few pennies)
someone called the BBB again and come 9/16, his liscense was revoked for price gouging and he was forced to sell his buisness.
i know all of this because me and the manager had a thing going on and she called me on 9/16 to wish me a happy b-day and to give me the good news about a man that i despised.
i know for a fact that he wasn't a member of anything that would force him to run a better buisness.

the bottom line is this,the BBB has ALOT of pull in the US and if they can see a way to make some coin from it(fines) then i'm sure they'de do whatever they can to help out and it wouldn't cost anything more then a phone call.

I dropped by the body shop last weekend. Painter had that "Oh, ****!" look on his face when he saw me, but he was cool. Saw the hood, trunk, and the roof, and he's gonna touch it up in a few weeks. Probably towards the end of the year though.
