Default front bumper for truck/hummers

anybody ever made their own front bumper - just something basic to protect the vehicle from head-on hits? And I've seen those giant bumpers on ebay, I'm trying build something a little less elaborate and lightweight. I just looking for some ideas or inspiration.

thank for any ideas
