Sounds like the motor isn't seated right, you accelerate forwards and the motor moves into a position where it can turn the wheels but in reverse it comes loose and moves to a position where the gears don't quite mesh and all you get is a bit of grinding.

Take the motor out, check that the mounts are all correct and that you have a gear setup that will connect correctly, the put it back together and make sure everything is nice a tight.

is it 4wd? if so make sure that you have the correct length shaft and that you have the front and rear bearings on....also, make sure you have those tiny bearings in place on the second gear (the gear on top of the differential), if you dont have the little bearings on those studs, it'll grind in some instances. also, make sure your dog bones aren't binding up for any reason.

plus. check that your pinion is pushed all the way in.
it could also be that you have the wrong spacer with the wrong pinion etc. check those aswell.

i had this issue on my crawler chassis before i turned it into a crawler. i ended up having to buy the composite 3 unit gear for it and new bushings on it. and that took care of my problem.
