The butt of the gun was by his left shoulder and and his head was on the gun. When he shot the, the gun is powerful, that is arm flew back, he broke his shoulder and the gun hit his head and the shock killed him. or the gun snapped his head back.

can i have two guess's?
here is one... you said the gun was shot off, do you mean the gun was shot off by a distant sniper and the mans gun flew out of his hand and hit his brain? and here's the other... the guy died of old age, starvation poison, or sumthing, but when he fell...he fell in such a way that his finger tightened around the trigger and the gun fired...

He was shot with a gun by a second person. The second person left the gun and him in the field. His body decomposed, leaving no evidence of a bullet wound on his body. We can just assume he was shot.
