My first car, maybe?

So i've put myself in a bind, ughh. I've set my mind to 'car mode' again, and well i want a car. The problem is my mom doesn't work (and yes, she doesn't mind me having a car, but no job = no say.) My dad won't pay child support. I actually emailed him asking if he'd pay, so I could at some point in my life get a car, apparently he was ****ed about that.

I live with my hard-headed, and let me stress hard-headed, grandparents and my mom. They just refuse to get me a car. Sadly, i know for a fact they have the money (grandpa makes over 100k/yr). They just don't want to share. On the other hand i actually found a few cars that look eh nice, and their fairly close.

BUT what i'm here for is advice, wtf should i do? :/
I (hahaha) was googling 'how to's' of asking parents about buying a car. I read that it's cheaper with insurance if each driver has their own car.
Anything else i'm unaware of? ;p

I would guess that your grandparents come from the school of thought where there are no handouts or free rides, you have to work for what you want. I came from a split up family, lived with my mom who had nothing and had to work to buy my first junker (nissan 200sx). I understand that times are a little different now and most of your friends parents are probably giving them cars. I'm going through a similar dilemma as I have a daughter who will be driving soon, I have the means to get her a car but I personally do not think she would appreciate it as much nor take care of it in the same manner that she would if she worked for it. Just my boring opinion.

craigslist. i found a 2001 Corolla for $500. plus, you may want to get a job. even on minimum waged, you can get a decent car, be able to pay it off within a few years, but the insurance i really dont know about. it would depend on the coverage.

Well,I got mine early...But i say check Cars.com for a nice car from 5k-10k if you can afford that before or after you get a job.

My parents bought my oldest sister her '78 Monte Carlo for her, and my other sister her '91 Ranger, but I had to purchase my car with my own funds.

I have been working since I was 14 to purchase my own things, so when I was 17 I bought my Mazda 626 for $2600 cash (took me a little over a month to get the funds).

If your old enough to be looking into owning your own car you ought to be old enough to get a part time job to pay for it. Just my two cents.

Have you tried asking them if they will match what you raise, i.e. you get a job and save 3K they give you 3K.... that's another solution that might interest them more because it shows your willing and serious about getting a ride.

Yehh, things is they don't necessarily want me to get a job. I figure they're raising me just like my mother, and well jobless, going on 40, and still with your parents. LOL i've tried every excuse in the book.

But yeah theres a problem when they wont allow me to get a job. :]

Hmm that does make it somewhat difficult.... unfortunately I think your only option is going to be to go behind their backs and just get a job

I'm not sure what their deal is about you working, but that is also a part of my situation. My daughter will be old enough to work in january yet I do not want her to get a job, I want her to enjoy what she has left of her childhood because once she is out of school she will most likely work the rest of her life with a few weeks off here and there. Is this their reasoning?

I think its that they dont want me to fall behind in school or theyre just hard headed and stuck on no. I really dont know but they need to find something because i refuse to take one of their cars. I'm afraid there will be an emergency, ugh.

beg 24.7 Thats what i did... got me a jeep or if your grandpa/parents have an older car ask for that car. the jeep was my dads but he only used it as a train car (for going to the train-station for work, not to pull trains) and he glady gave it up for a new smart car.

So you are being offered a car but it's not good enough? If thats the case you should just buy some good shoes.

No, their own car. Err their daily driver? I don't want to share for emergency reasons.

The whole car thing isn't a big deal to rush into really - it's like having a baby of your own - you have to take care of it which means money has to go into it for it run properly.
I found a car for my daughter on Ebay Motors - it was right in the area plus it was only for $1,700 for a 98 2 door Pontiac Sunfire. My daughter currently pays for her own gas since she has a job (or 2 I think) but we still pay for her insurance which is ridiculiously high because she's a teenager. We also pay for any repairs on the car so she gets to do some of my wife's errands to offset things alittle.
I say if your grand parents are going to give you a car - take it as a starter (beggers can't be choosers!) - you can always trade it in later for something you can afford. If you really want to get something on your own the best idea would be to push the issue on getting a job yourself - maybe you need to point out to your grandparents and your mother that it will be good if you're able to work and get your own things plus possible offer alittle to them once you start making some extra cash (you don't want to make them think that you'll be selfishly working and keeping it all to yourself).

Just be patient also Model - good things will come to those who wait! If you really want to get things moving then get a part-time job after school and save up until you're able to get a decent starter car.

Just lay out the facts, you want a car. Tell them you are responsible and willing to work to pay for the car/gas/insurance and it will teach you integrity and work skills at an early age while instilling moral values and work ethics. If they are still opposed to the job, offer the ultimatum that they can pay for you a car if you keep an X percentage of grades high or whatever. Just let them know how important it is to you.

at least see if you get a job if they will help you buy the car..compromise itll get there point to teach you responcibillity, and you get a car (plus if you get a job you might want a car to get there)
