She walks into the elevator and leaves the oxygen machine outside the door. While the elevator decends the oxygen lines are cut off and she dies from a loss of pure oxygen.

but then why does it stop?

i'd say she is escaping a tornado/ hurricane, but due to the tank she cannot take the stairs. the storm kills the hospitals electricity, the elevator stops, and she is trapped until either the building falls or she runs out of air.
