Newton's 3rd law vehicle for class
Hey, I have to build a vehicle for class using Newton's 3rd law:For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. I have to build a vehicle using self-propulsion as in not having me push the vehicle or drop it at an angle. You can use items such as rubber bands and stuff but no canned air or co2 or anything like that. These are the guidelines that I got in class.
Your vehicle must use Newton's 3rd law of motion to move forward; it must move forward by pushing backward on the floor, the air, or some other object. The force has to be initiated by the vehicle; meaning it must move under its own power and not from a push or a pull. In other words the vehicle and it's propulsion device cannot receive any outside force. Your vehicle must travel forwards 1.5 meters and completely cross the finish line. The path of your vehicle should stay within a width of 1 meter. You are not allowed to interfere with the movement of your vehicle. You cannot give your vehicle a push as you launch it, and you cannot help it in any way as it travels from the starting line through the finish line. You cannot use any form of electricity or the pull of gravity to move your vehicle. This mean you cannot use a downhill ramp to get your vehicle started. You may not use fuel ro canned air such as carbon dioxide or rocket engines. You must build your vehicle from scrap materials. No pre-made vehicles or kits allowed. Now what kind of vehicle would be the best?

you in 8th grade because we just did that. make a evo8 lol
for rear axle: get ur axle and a gear. glue the gear to the axle. then put one of the rubber bands on the gear and pull it back and then you have a rubber band propelled cars axle. when i get time i'll help you out. Last edited by mustanglover; 10-23-2007 at 03:49 PM.. |

we had to make the same thing once...that was a long time ago...man, ummm if i remember right i used a rat trap with string tied to it, and wrapped around a solid axle. when you set the mousetrap off it pulls the string and spins the axle. attatch some soft rubber wheels front and rear for good traction and you're ready to go

its simple, i know theres no premade kits but can you use stuff from an xmod?
if you have any gen1 stuff, you can build a drive system with the rear axles, gear box, and gear differential. 1. Lock the diff with some sticky tack (poster tack), or hot glue. 2. While you have the differential apart, cut a rubber band and put it in between the two halves of the diff before you screw it back together (don't tighten it to the point of cutting the elastic). 3. mount the the gearbox on a chasis you built, cut out of sheet metal, or wood, whatever you have available. cut two holes in line (towards the front of the car), maybe 2 inches away from the diff, and tie the other end of the elastic to the area between the two holes. You may need to leave some slack in the elastic. 4. mount some front wheels, you probably want to use a straight axle to keep the car going straight. 5. pull the car backwards to load the elastic, but don't overload the elastic or it may break, or simply cause the car to spin out. you may need to experiment with a few different kind of elastics elastic slack. make sense?

I made one, powered by a mouse trap. one inch steel pipe, held 3/4 in wooden dowls for axles. With square blocks, drilled a 3/4 in hole for the dowl to go in, and then screwed that square to a CD, making the wheels.
The biggest fall, is I used at thick *** block of wood for the chassis, so it was heavy. But it went 6 feet..

you know those things that you can pull then let go and a whole bunch of air comes out? use one of those or something similar.
but mostly, this is YOUR project. we shouldn't be doing your homework.

I built a rubber band car for a class in college. I made it out of Legos. It ended up going 90 feet.
