Lithium Polymer is better in performance, packaging and maybe weight (depending on cell configuration). But, the horror stories about them are true and do happen. So, they take more 'baby sitting' and precaution. But, when taken care of, they are safe and very effective.
Sort of like and old sports car. With out the right kind of care and attention it won't hesitate to put you into a wall.
