So you connected the positive to positive, and negative to negative, thats the wrong way to do it for a 6 cell. You need to tie in the extra 2 cells in, in a series circuit, negative to positive, otherwise you mess up the batteries.
The way you described your setup, is kinda like having northbound and southbound highway traffic on the same lane of the freeway, it'll move for a second, but then everything stops and temperatures start to rise.
