Part time AWD

Does anyone have any idea how i could make a part time AWD system, where i could engage and disengage the awd system from the control of by hitting a switch on the car. show me pics if you have any, tell me how to make the part time system!:)

HellGuard99 03-21-2007 07:39 PM

Dream on, AWD doesnt work like that. If you can find a way, then try it.

LoL!!!!

i wish that was available

Here's my idea. Tune the reciever to handle one more channel, and install another servo. Figure out a way to have the servo move a gear into place at the flip of a switch, and you got a functioning AWD/RWD option.

More work than its worth.

......one of tthe worst noob ideas/questions I have ever seen

It would be very hard and to costly, plus making fit in such a small car would be almost impossible.

Don't think of it like that. I'd like to think of it as something to consider, after all the other things I've seen in my days, I say it'd be a perfectly acceptable idea.

Though, I've heard better...

Buy two xmods.

Make one AWD and leave the other RWD.

Then drive the AWD one and when you want RWD grab the other Xmod and drive it.

There ya go! It'd be a lot more time/ cost effective to just have multiple Xmods to meet certain needs.

civicblack10 03-21-2007 09:24 PM

yeah man that would be nice to have but like everyone else says it would be very hard since its such a small car. i have 3 awd cars and 1 rwd car and it works pretty nice for me.

Numbchux 03-21-2007 09:29 PM

yep, there's some pretty n00bish stuff going on here, but none of it from the original poster

seriously people, if you don't have a clue...don't post. "Sometimes its better to be thought a fool, then to open your mouth and remove all doubt"

back on topic though

although I have no idea why you'd need it, it actually wouldn't be too hard. 'tuning' the stock system to handle another channel isn't going to happen. doing it remotely would be virtually impossible (you'd need to convert to hobby grade electronics, and to effectively control it, a many hundred dollar system at that).

BUT, you might be able to make something to effectively disengage the driveshaft, or one of the front dogbones. heck, if you've got an evo, get some hot racing alloy front knuckles. then the only tool you need to pull a front dogbone is the lug wrench. pull of the wheel, unscrew the cap over the bearings, slide the stub and dogbone out, replace stub, replace cap, replace wheel. done! (and you'd only have to do it to one side, as long as the front diff isn't locked, it'll just slip and act as RWD)

the problem is, you wouldn't see the performance increase from switching it to 2WD. because all the gears would still be there, and still be turning (unless you removed the pinion gear, and BOTH dogbones, in which case you might as well remove the front diff too....), and still be eating power through friction, but you'd just have less traction.

for all the hassle and design work you would have to do its not worth that little bit of "performance" gain, if you would call it that. What would be cool, but impossible in an xmod, would be to have a smart AWD system, like in that of a car, that engages when the computer feels a wheel losing traction. A computer is too big to do this with and even with AWD i have no problem losing traction so it would be pointless.

you could do that with out a computer you would need a viscous coupling, but having some one make one that small would not be cost effective.

bigger rc's have 2 and 3 speed gear boxes, and other items controlled by an additional servo (and extra channel on the TX to operate the servo). The stock RS TX is not upgradeable to 3 channel, so you'd need to start replacing all sorts of parts to make your idea work. Plus, you'd need to come up with a way for the servo to actually move the awd gear in and out. It is very complex and costly, but in THEORY could be done...

TheB1GDude 03-22-2007 08:47 AM

The problem I see with it is that even if you did put the money into building this system you would only be able to use it when the car is stationary! Because if you are running a decent amount of power and you try to "engage" the front diff to make to the front wheels turns you are going to get a spike thats going to throw the car of balance and most likely cause it to flip or spin or destroy the diffs and as much as you can tell yourself that you will only use it when the car is stationary there is going to be a point when you are driving the car that you think "oh it wont be that bad - I'll just turn it on" and bang there goes your Xmod!

Other than that though I think its a great idea - it kind of reminds me of the cars from Mad Max where they can turn the SuperCharger system on and off whilst driving!

hawkskater 03-22-2007 06:36 PM

Everyone just forget the cost, or how much work it would be, im just seeing if anyone is up to the challenge of trying to design a part time AWD xmod, or if anyone has any ideas at all, Im just trying to get people to think of ways to improve xmods.

Numbchux 03-22-2007 07:44 PM

I've got a few ideas, and could probably make it work with the stuff I already have....but I just don't see why.

librarianliam 03-22-2007 07:52 PM

well you could use it to have more traction in corners i guess by switching it to awd before entering the turn and go to rwd out of the turn for more speed...

r/cdrifter7 03-22-2007 08:30 PM

you guys are thinking WAY to hard. just take an antenna and find a way to hook it up to the gears. but cut it in the middle. then you have to cut a slit in the chassis so you can some how slide the antenna forward and engage it ot the other half. it would look kinda like this: (one half of the anntenna) --< >-- (other half of the antenna) then they would engage somehow (probably by some putty on the end of a tiny screwdriver or a paper clip, so it will stick to the antenna and you can push it forword.) when they engage it would kinda look like this: --X-- . if you dont understand make 2 peace signs with your hands. then slide one peace side into the other and thats kinda how it works

the problems are in a xmod its kinda hard to find a spot to cut a slit. the second one is if your driving the antenna might disengage. the third is that dirt might get in through the slit and hurt the drive shaft somehow. there are other porblems but i forgot what they are.

sorry for all the misspelled words.

There's where your poblem is... You don't want awd going into a corner, because it causes understeer. Plus, the jolt you'd get from engaging and disengaging the system in the middle of a turn would throw the cars off balance.

Plus, the added stuff to make it work would make the car heavier, and maybe be less balanced for racing. I thought you wanted it more for off road, where you'd stop and switch to awd for the tough parts...
