49 merc

My latest project is gonna be a 1949 Merc, im using a resin body and a model kit for the parts - lights, bumpers etc. Im not entirely sure which way im gonna go with it, but i have got an engine i have been desperate to use on an xmods, only problem is, it doesn't really suit the 1:1 car, well if anyone has opinions on whether i should use the engine let me know, mock up pics will come shortly, for now here's the body and the engine.

Looking at the engine i really am not sure the car would suit having the bonnet cut for it. Anyone have an opinion?

That engine would be much better suited to an old hot rod like this:

Mostly due to the design of the headers.

49 Mercs are meant to be low, chopped, and flames flying out of the exhaust. Not sure I've seen one with a blower sticking out of the hood.

Definitely looks like a sweet project.

Ska_Ranger 11-29-2009 01:24 PM

You right, the engine was intended for use in a Model T Rat rod project but the model kit for that one turned out to be A mssing parts and B not the right scale at all. I thought id extend the exhausts through the body for some discreet styled side exits but i just cant figure whether having a blower out the hood would suit the merc.

Edit:

Ok i found a model with one fitted but google hasn't shown me any real cars, what you guys reckon, yay or nay? (just the blower - not the colour etc)

Nay. But maybe if it was lower so only the chrome top was showing, and not the yellow/gold, it would look better..

man that's going to be a sick ride when its done :eyecraz: cant wait!!

okoye 11-29-2009 10:46 PM

hey where did you get that body?

Ska_Ranger 12-03-2009 03:19 PM

I got it from Ebay.

I spend far too much time on Ebay. lol

okoye 12-09-2009 06:42 AM

lol name of the brand?

Ska_Ranger 12-17-2009 01:49 PM

I think 'Jimmy Flintstone' is the brand but it hasn't got any branded packaging. Mock up pics soon, still undecided about the engine.

Update Time!

Ive just moved back from abroad so sorry for the delay. Im going to use a gen1 chassis for this, ive done the mock up but i need to grind out some of the body to get it to sit low enough at the front, also the chassis needs to be lengthened by quite a bit so....

Ive decided to do a custom carbon fibre chassis made to measure, i have the plans laid out so hopefully the chassis will be cut and rebuilt built tomorrow.

The model body and he carbon sheet the chassis is going to be made from:

This is the mock up, it needs to sit lower at the front imo:

Oh btw, the wheel will be centred to the body when its all done, heres a pic of the original xmod chassis im using before i strip it to get me templates for the carbon.

dude, Focus is your friend. if it can't focus at that distance, back up a little.

EvilBenson 12-29-2009 07:26 AM

Ska_Ranger 01-17-2010 03:29 PM

YAY, update coming soon, take pics tomorrow in the light, sorry for the delay, i cracked two ribs in my chest so progress has been slow. Finally the model kit came and ive prepped the body for the model kit donor parts and for painting. Guesses welcome as to the paint lol.

Great to see an update to this build. I wish you could get some Non-blurry photos to view. I like the CF chassis, right up my ally. Do you know how your design will be. And is that the ebay 1.5mm CF?

Ska_Ranger 01-17-2010 03:44 PM

its 1.5mm carbon and about 17.5cm long, but im having trouble re attaching the electrics and steering mechanism to the chassis. I think im going to have to layer the carbon to match the original xmods chassis. Yeah its 1.5mm thick. Ill be using a proper digital camera in better light tomorrow so hopefully get some clearer photo's.

TripleXmodder(akaXXX) 01-17-2010 03:52 PM

Look through all my build threads... I have made SEVERAL CF chassis. You shouldn't have to do anything like that.

EvilBenson 01-17-2010 08:53 PM

COME ON HURRY UP WITH THE NEW PICTURES..I CANT WAIT ANYMORE...... i really need to see new pics of this car mate, its gonna be such a nice car, i really love old cars like that cos i feel thay had so much style and class

Ska_Ranger 01-18-2010 02:57 PM

The carbon chassis is now under its 3rd stage of development lol. I couldnt find any carbon chassis for gen 1 models, have you done any XXX? Im struggling to get the steering and front wheel mounts to work properly without using the original xmods part.

Ok well heres the model im using for the parts:

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/k...s/100_1779.jpg

Ive done a lot of work on the body, it doesnt seem like it but ive taken a lot of material off and cut out and shaped the windows to prep it for paint:

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/k...s/100_1772.jpg

And the first paint - not dried at time of taking, its a Matte colour:

I have to say i am impressed with the model, it has the split screen which is very kool and im tempted to do something with it...

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/k...s/100_1773.jpg

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/k...s/100_1770.jpg

Well, pics of the carbon chassis will come in the next day or so, hopefully i'll get a design that works properly with the steering.

Comments, suggestions and criticism welcome.

EvilBenson 01-24-2010 08:59 PM

still my favorite body ive ever seen

Ska_Ranger 01-25-2010 05:53 AM

It is very kool lol, sanded down to get it properly prepped, my CF chassis is finally coming together now, its taken ages bacause i wanted a unique detailed chassis which meant designing it completely from scratch. Thanks to XXX for the advice. Pics coming soon.
