Bearing modifications

If i were to take apart a seized up bearing, re-polish everything inside, and put it back together with only half the nummber of balls, do you think the friction reduction would be worth the reduction in bearing life?

lol 12-31-2009 11:48 AM

I don't know, your the normally smart one, just lube it up and you should be fine.

XMDrifter 12-31-2009 12:03 PM

i'm just making sure that the risk isn't too big.
cuz i've already done the 5-ball mod on 4 of my bearings

The time issue vs. the cost?

XMDrifter 12-31-2009 01:34 PM

the performance vs durability

dreamingISdrifting 12-31-2009 01:59 PM

efficiency vs maintenance, well in my opinion i would usually take efficiency, but it depends how well you can get your hands on new bearings when they go out of order.

GearHeadV8 12-31-2009 05:13 PM

what is the 5 ball mod?

Blade. 12-31-2009 06:06 PM

Looking at :

Increase in speed. >VS< Shorter life span.

The speed factor is nice, less friction = more power to the ground right?

The life span is the problem though.. which in my opinion is a sad part, gain a good amount of "power" but lose so much life... Unless re-lubing will cause this little mod to live longer.

I'd say go for it, cause you won't know unless you try it!

If something goes wrong, you can learn from your mistakes right?

Good-Luck!

Blade.

Well, if you do have left over little bearing bawls, that is if you don't lose them, you can still fix it after.

XMDrifter 12-31-2009 08:32 PM

basically,
1. with a thin pin, poke the ball bearing cage out
2. push all the balls to one side of the bearing so it comes apart (keep track of those balls)
3. clean the outer ring, inner ring, and cage until they're nice and shiny (like chrome-shiny)
4. reassemble bearing using 5 of the 10 original balls, spacing the balls out evenly
5. do a standard bearing cleaning procedure and spin the bearings a bit to get the balls cleaned
6. dry off and oil with your choice of bearing oil

and yes, i have like, 30 extra bearing balls now.

life is a lot shirter but like he said less friction = more speed
id do it:)

I hate to be a prick, but you're absolutely the most annoying post whore that's been here in a while.

well some ones got to lay down the facts... honestly cycy if you could please read the date of the threads youa re posting on and please consider if the person has already done the mod, most likely he has already done it and doesnt need anymore feedback considering this is almost a month old.

I wouldn't do it unless your competing in races or something. It doesn't seem worth it. Its simply not going to make your car THAT much faster.

XMDrifter 01-20-2010 09:09 PM

eh, i have a lot of extra balls left and can easily just rebuild the bearings

cycygrace 01-20-2010 09:25 PM

im sorry it was in recent post list so i thought it was new
im going to try to not post for as long as possible unless i have something worth posting
