Solar Power!!!

I made my xmod run off of solar power just in time for earth day.

Wrong board, but very impressive. This could benefit MAs that are taken outside since they're the only Z that can handle pavement and survive.

kendallcschm 04-22-2009 05:27 AM

gaahhh.. you beat me to it.. i didn't have the cash for a good board so i never got to it... but there are a few threads of mine with the same idea... lol... so when you gonna test it?

firebird999 04-22-2009 08:13 AM

videos of it working or it doesn't.

So, here is the spec on an actual solar cell

Cell Specifications:
Average Power (Watts): 1.75 Wp
Average Current (Amps): 3.5 Imax
Average Voltage (Volts): 0.5 Vmax
Thickness 190 μm = 0.19 mm
Exact dimension: 3 1/4 inches x 6 inches, or 80 mm by 150 mm
Weight: Just above 6 grams, or 0.2 oz.

Notice this one is WAY larger than the one on the car pictured. You do the math.

zippo855 04-22-2009 12:05 PM

interesting, looks like the solar panel out of a calculator. how many days does it take to charge that battery? any specs on it?

amorton94 04-22-2009 01:51 PM

You should wire up 10 or more of those solar boards. Interesting idea. Any video?

imnotmikal 04-22-2009 03:34 PM

If you plan on using a body, disguise it as a sunroof.

Gearhead14 04-23-2009 09:48 PM

Yes it works.I'll upload some vids of it running.Idk how long it takes to charge.
And yes it is from a calculator.

Gearhead14 04-23-2009 11:56 PM

Video of it in action.

texan_idiot25 04-24-2009 12:05 AM

I call shenanigans.

The video does not show the same car that had no batteries being placed on the ground. Those cells from a calculator, even in the sunlight they would not have enough out put for an xmod, much less in a room with fluorescent bulbs. Several guys on XMS even went threw the calculations of using much higher quality solar cells to power them and found that the size panel needed to produced the power and current for the xmod would have exceeded the size of the car.

Unless your using the solar cell to charge some battery, which is another story. But then it's not being solar power, just charged.

mustanglover 04-24-2009 12:14 AM

when he turns it on, the servo does no center.

Gearhead14 04-24-2009 12:20 AM

Your forgetting that the solar panel is directly connected to a rechargable lithium ion battery.I'll make a better vid.with the wheels offset so that you can see the servo working.

Gearhead14 04-24-2009 12:50 AM

There.happy?

Wouldn't be enough.
Solar Cells have no where near enough power to power a xmod.
You could do a 'charge and dump' circuit to build power in a cap (or battery) for a few hours (with TONNES of cells) and then drive for about five seconds.

I'm with Tex. BS.

Gearhead14 04-24-2009 03:32 PM

Whatever.

firebird999 04-24-2009 05:37 PM

the battery is already charged. i want more proof before i can believe you.

i agree, this is a totaly easy thing to fake

Gearhead14 04-24-2009 08:02 PM

What kind of proof?

mustanglover 04-24-2009 08:12 PM

take it apart it car always on camera show that batterys is dead, an connect it up and run it.
