1/10 Discovery 3

Joining the Baja Buildoff and taking a new approach to my LR3. All I have to show is the chassis design and tubing made by bigdodge88. I will be using 1/16 Slash axles (independent) and a custom chassis also by bigdodge88. The internal roll cage will be made out of styrene for now (decorative purposes).

This will go into the 4WD Production Stock class.

Two is always better than one.

My old LR3 body, and a brand spanking new one, in the best color; black.

Got me some SDI Grip Doctors!

Test mounted the Doctores on the LR3, and the are a perfect fit wheel well wise. Just waiting on my rims.

Are these bodies you keep getting intended for RC? As usual I expect something amazing!

AeroSynch 09-19-2009 09:39 PM

They are off cheap Chinese toy cars. They are remote control, but I just take the body and throw the rest away.

Thank you!

Very nice body indeed...
This should be interesting. :)
BTW, I don't know why but this picture cracked me up:

 Thank you.

Maybe because it is missing rims? Or it is the first LR3 you have seen with mud tires and not going to be a soccer mom truck? Hehehe.

Awesome looking shell, Aero! :bigwink: Where'd you find the second one? FleaBay?

Thank you. I bought it off the RCCrawler forum. ;)

Here are two builds in one thread. Dakar LR3 and stock LR3.
Dakar is white rims, stock is on the XC chassis. (Beat up body)

I reckon you should build an external roll cage for one of them ;)

AeroSynch 09-21-2009 06:25 PM

The Dakar LR3 is going to have a Dakar spec internal roll cage, as seen in post #1.

This is back, finally got the 1/16. It was a steal at $155 from my LHS. :nice:

I sold the CC-01, but I still have the two LR3 bodies, so I will keep one for any "oops" incidents.

Anyhow, I am really stoked that the 1/16 Slash axles are the perfect width for the body. I will be sending the axles soon to bigdodge88 for him to make my chassis.

Before I put on the LR3, I had this Mini Cooper body weathered by 7point2 that fit the wheelbase perfectly on the 1/16 Slash:

Discovery 3 photos. Sorry, cell phone pictures:

The suspension is compressed halfway in the above pictures of the LR3. It has more ground clearance as shown in the second picture.

Started to disassemble the Slash today. This is what the center driveline looks like:

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...3/Photo321.jpg

Here is the transmission removed with motor. I am surprised at how small it is! It is perfect for a transfer case in my opinion, so I will either use two Slash transmissions, one at the front connected to another one as the transfer case, or just a center mounted transmission.

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...3/Photo325.jpg
http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...3/Photo326.jpg

Then I removed the front axle from the chassis:

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...3/Photo335.jpg

I mocked up the LR3 with the axles to see how I was going width wise, and it is perfect. If anything, I might add a bit of spacing. The body will not be as high.

Started toying with the drive line layout:

Everything is already cut out. All that is left to do is finish drilling and assembling the front axle hanger and attach the shock towers. Then to figure out how to mount the motor and trans right behind the front axle assembly.

Stay tuned...
