Countersteer drifting on xmod (Counter-Dori!) made reality

here's the videoclip of a 1.5 overdrive on my rsx:

it's very hard to control though if you're new to rc drifting, but (@whitecharisma) i think if you're up to the challenge, try it.

all it takes is 1 swap out: an 8t center gear in front instead of the RadioShack spec 12t

What exactly is that. Sorry im a drifting noob as far as that terminology goes.

The rear wheels rotate more than the front does, so it will have the RWD characteristic.

That's what I think it does, I could be wrong though.

perfect explanation

this is geared so the rear wheels are spinning 150% the speed of the front wheels, meaning the rear wheels will make 3 rotations to the front's 2.
this simulates the rwd characteristic of spinning wheels on the rear, meaning that you have to countersteer to keep your drift from spinning out.

at this scale, i don't think anything higher than this would be consistent enough to be fun, but i do know that at larger scales such as 1:10, they do 200% or higher rear overdrives, which is where i got my inspiration for this idea. you could probably use an motor pinion and melt the D shape in the back of it for different overdrive ratios:

8t:150%
9t: 133%
10t: 120%
11t: 109%
12t: 100% (stock)

just for reference

interesting

XMDrifter 01-11-2011 02:13 PM

i can post videos of 1:10th'ers doing their countersteer drifting:
it looks so much more realistic

Cool, I know about the counter steer, I just didn't know you had the front wheels slower than the rear, or that it was called.. counter-dori .. what does that mean anyway.

XMDrifter 01-11-2011 02:42 PM

dori is just short for dorifto, which is "drift" in japanese.
counter is for countersteer
lol

TripleXmodder(akaXXX) 01-11-2011 03:12 PM

oh, ok... cool. I hope you get the hang of it with the Xmod.

IHateMakingUserNames 01-11-2011 03:12 PM

This is pretty sweet, if I could ever get an AWD kit and get the gearing I would definitely try this since I already do a bit of RWD drifting with my GT-R. I don't think I would go with the full 150%, but definitely giving that little bit more power to rear would help with speeds and again you would have that little bit more of a realistic drift going.

EDIT: Those 1:10 vids are crazy, the Stage D-Like ones, if your not paying real close attention, look like real cars every once and a while.

Someone read too much Over-rev. lol

My 2 cents is that there's a reason why a larger scale can do this, or rather needs to do this technique much more than we do with Zs and Xmods. 1/28 is just way too small to make these techniques fully effective and practical.

Since you're like me and seek a difficult way out, all I'll say is get a 2.4 MA-010. A crummy xmods will never offer you the full range of adjustments and steering performance a MA is capable of. You get main gearing adjustment, individual diff gearing adjustment, types of diffs you can use, and lastly various width and offset wheels (narrow front, wide rear gives that RWD feel without any other adjustments on top).

That's obvious... but not everyone can go out and spend $$$$ for a Z set-up like that. Maybe not even an Xmod.. like maybe it was an Xmas gift. That's what is so fun about messing around with Xmods .. DIY with little $$$$

Nice job Drifter... enjoy.

XMDrifter 01-11-2011 03:52 PM

i suspect that higher overdrive ratios become more useable the bigger the scale you do it on. that's why i feel like if i go to a 200% OD on my xmod that i won't be able to control it at all, while at 1:10th, the OD ratio is often seen at 200% or higher

Dr. Kustom 01-11-2011 03:52 PM

I wonder if the GPM Xmods differentials are adjustable. Cause if they do, then you could set the front diff. to the loose-est setting as possible and almost lock up the rear diff. That will help too. At least that's what I've done to my MA-010 and it works great rather on RCP or hardwood floor.

XMDrifter 01-11-2011 03:57 PM

i suppose on MA10, you could use a 26t diff up front and a 16 or 18t diff in rear and try out some drifting.

this sounds interesting i understand how it works just not sure wht you do to your car, can someone shine alittle light here

Yes you can, and I've done it LOLLL

Nice setup though XMDrifter, can I ask how you got a 8t front gear???

Yeah and you can also use a GPM diff and loosen it up in the front. My rear diff is already locked so the Skyline oversteers like mad and its hard to get a proper wide drift with it. I think it looks cool but at this scale no one can tell its countersteering anyways :P

I could definitely see it in your video though XM!! Xmods just need better radio so the steering is more precise. The reason why I upgraded all my cars hehe

EDIT: oh and didn't i post my counter steer tutorial on this forum too? I know i did on xmf... its for the Gen 1 though. I'll double check here real quick and if its not I'll post it up :D

EDIT 2: k posted it here!! not too great though, gotta refine it if I have time. Gotta find some of this footage though... I think I lost it!!

cs has a lot of factors, but overdrive is probably the most effective factor. however, you gotta be basically willing to dedicate a car to CS drifting and CS drifting only because of the sheer effort it takes to set it up to where you can actually drive it.
i actually hacked an 8t pinion from a k'nex motor. heat up a spare steel driveshaft, then melt-in the D shape socket from the back. it's not a bevel by any means. if i can find a 8t plastic bevel gear with a similar pitch, then i'll mod that to work and possibly convert another one of my drifters to CS
(5-cell CS 370z? maybe?) the longer wheelbase would probably help control it better, so the CS mod would most likely work best on a medium or long chassis rather than the short chassis i got here. the short chassis is so hard to catch when switching directions...

and i'll check it out. i've already tightened my rear stock diff and am working on camber mods
