Just ****in' around to the older forum I havent been to in ages...

This truck is the proverbial found it behind a house type story. My neighbor had it stored at a friends of his's house for a long while. It was gonna become a work truck, but it was too long to fit into his garage. So he offered it to me for $500. Its a (rare) 1969 Chevy CST/10. CST is short of Custom Spor Truck, the top trim level for the Chevy C10s in '69. Much like how Denali is top ranks for the Yukon. Only 6% of all the pickups in '69 were the CST package, and around an estimate 5000 or so in my trucks configuration, The longbed CST10, as opposed to shortbeds/CST20s/CST30s/etc

For the sake of time, Im just gonna quote from my thread on XMW:

As of yesterday, Im now the PROUD owner of a 1969 Chevy CST/10! :D

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p316/texanidiot25/IMG_0013.jpg
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p316/texanidiot25/IMG_0012.jpg

This isnt at my house yet. Were gonna rope tow it this saturday.

$500, the guy who owns that cougar, he let me have it for a deal. He was gonna sell it online for 2 grand, but would rather it be in my hands.

No engine or trans, but the body is straight, and dent free. Just rusted at the rocker pannels, but its not like thats uncommon, and classicparts.com has replacements for 20 bucks. The interior is rough. Its a short bed, long cab configuration. And its the rare CST/10. Only 2000 were made in '70, so I assume the figures are the same, if not less for the 69.

He offered it friday afternoon, check it out that night, was grilled about responisbility all weekend, pulled all my cash from the bank sunday, bought it that night.

I was gonna do the GMC, but this is something you cant pass up.

Things todo:
-Already have a EFI 350 small block from like a 96 Tahoe?
-Possibly a 700R4 Transmission, its the one my dad had in storage. Its a 3 speed auto w/ over drive
-Paint is Harley-Davidson Orange, and in good shape. Just really needs to be washed.
-all the works to make the engine run, andlegal.
-some trim pieces around the tail lights and tail gate are gone. No big deal
-Painting those farm-truck-white rims black.
-disk brakes upfront

7am, and the morning is still cool. We jump into a friends truck, and head out.

Todays Mission: Pick up the CST/10.

So we get to the house its stored at, and back in the GMC pick up we borrowed for the day. chained it up to the CST/10, I jumped into the GMC, my dad took the CST/10. Things were tight (pull the CST/10 around a Camaro, across a drive way that goes over a ditch, and pull a tight right turn into the coldesac). No problems, nothing hit.

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p316/texanidiot25/Chevy%20homecoming/IMG_0072.jpg
tow bar hooked up.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p316/texanidiot25/Chevy%20homecoming/IMG_0070.jpg
Thats GM brother hood, lol. GMC pulling the ol' Chevy.

And off we go. No misshaps towing it to a $1 pressure washer station, besides the CST/10 front tires screching around tight corners from stops. We spray some engine degreaser all inside the engine bay, and go get some drinks while it soaks.

Coming home was almost un-eventfull, at on point the hood poped up and caught the 2ndary latch, and one motor mount vibrated out, and off (landed loudly) once we got into our neighborhood.

Pull, up, un hitch, and the 1st before-cleaning-picture:

After an hour, and 2 buckets of water later, she's all orange again! :bling:

the difference

Its been dubbed "OrangeCrush". My grandma stepped out, and saw it. She said "Oh my, Yall should call it OrangeCrush".

So, I dig the name. This will be a slow project, all depends on what cash I make, Ive gotta pay for it all.

Time to get a job...

For its age, its in good shape. The rust is only in the common trouble places, that there is patch panels galore for. The rockers have it, and the front fender, right at the bumper, and the passenger A-pillar are the troubles spots so far, and a weak cab corner that flexes when the passenger door is opened. That will be fixed, and the A pillar will be fixed. The rest can be done later when the exterior gets a total make over later on down the road

Whick isnt that much, when you see what other people start with, I got lucky, .

The last owner did some **** job on wiring. Not the guy I bought it from, but the one before him. Wired the fuel pump to a switch under the dash, but not to say a oil pressure switch. Also the sony tape deck thats in and amp is wire and twist nut land. Thats all going. We might try to fit a sub from an escalade in the passenger cab corner, and some new door speakers. Since thats all available for pretty much free from my dads work.

We going to make custom door panels, just planing out materials and what design right now. And a custom grille. One is dirt easy, the other is a lil more complex, but should have a cooooooool effect. Both are about the same price to do.

Its mesh vs. plexiglass. Either do simple black mesh, or what he thought up was buy some clear orange plexiglass sheets, and cut out slats. Mount one on top another with about 1/8 gap in between. Then at each end of each slat an idea was to wire in LEDs to light the grille. Maybe even making that the front turn signals if you know what I mean.

Try to imagin that in your head :P

Abit of work done, and the interior is about as stripped as we need it. With the exception of all the wiring which needs to be re-done.

Got the a/c blower to come on

Radio now stays on

Door panels gone, steering wheel gone, glove box fixed

Cowl vent screen made, and installed:

Interior:
Yes, the gas guage says full... lol

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p316/texanidiot25/IMG_0876.jpg

Basicaly just saving up cash right now, so when we order parts all at once, the shipping will be cheap.

Thats just a bit of it, goto http://www.xmodworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=22470 for the full thread, an arguement on springs, and more details and such.

That's in pretty good condition, actually!

I love those old boxy-trucks! Todays trucks are too round! Awesome fetch!

The GM brothers are still boxy
http://availablelightonline.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2006/08/gms2.jpg
:D I love the both. Unlike that porky, unholy thing called the new Tundra...

These things are a bit rounder than you think, and I love these old time body lines. :)

This is my dream truck, ever since I saw the C10 special edition in Truckin' mag, I drooled over the chance to own one... even though their hard to find cheap. Then 6 months later, I now own one. I bought it back in January.

Some ya'll might remember my past plans to do a 1998 GMC Jimmy http://www.xmodsource.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4004 . But I couldnt pass this amazing truck up.

Some things need to be changed a bit from the original plans:

New rims, some 17x7s front, 17x8s rear. Down to a few choices on what style. Lowed about 2 in the front, maybe drop the rear a few. But thats not final til we get an engine in and see how low it drops on its own. front disk brake conversion (GMC pauls, comes with lowerd spindals). The tahoe V8 is still an option, but Im gonna start trying to work my dad into using his 400hp TPI V8 that he has in storage since its literally, ready to go (see GMC thread for that engines story, im sure its there). But itd have to be de-tuned before I would get it... "400hp is too much"... Yeh, my dad has a 400+hp Camaro in highschool, lol. Never dyno'd, but ran 12s on street radials, and did a high 9s with drag slicks and racing gas, so you know it did business.

THanks guys.

The one on left is the Silverado.

Started a bit of interior work today, making some door panels.

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p316/texanidiot25/chevy%20progress-interior/IMG_0982.jpg
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p316/texanidiot25/chevy%20progress-interior/IMG_0983.jpg
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p316/texanidiot25/chevy%20progress-interior/IMG_0984.jpg

This will be the backing for the custom door panels. Both sides were cut from 1/8 inch particleboard, traced from the original door panels. Then the window crank and door handle holes were drilled out. Later the mounting screw holes will be drilled once I get a final fit (still a bit of trimming here and there, but for now both fit up real good) and the bottomc corners will be rounded. Arm rests will be made, and like the Copperhead from Trucks!, will mount in the stock location, but stretch forward to cover part of the door handle. Just the round part, leaving the handle sticking out enough to grab. Giving it a more modern look.

Looks like its in pretty good condition, nice find. I myself have been looking for a project car too, either a car or truck

Not a 69' and not a Chevy but..

My grandfather has a 73' GMC 1500 Super Custom. Its Blue with a white cap top, runs like a top always have it in running order. Its been back and forth from Florida and Michigan, and its got over 200k on it. We did rebuild the motor but that was just to make it new again. One nice thing is its has little to no rust, a few dime sized spots on the bed that's about all. Here's a few pics but i don't wanna high jack you thread.

Again very nice truck you have.

03-15-2007, 10:10 PM
AH man, how awesome. I saw one of the same body style a few nights ago. I love these ol' GM trucks. Glad to see Im no the only GM lover.

Both side rockers are rusted, I can see the ground from the driveer side rocker. The top of the passenger A-pillar has some tar/putty crap, so I guess it might be rusted, and the bottom of the passenger side of the windshield is rusted through. And, the passenger side fender, where it meets the bumper is gone.

But as you can tell, its not so obliviouse to the world. Im sure you guys are gonna now scroll up to the other pics to see what Ive just pointed out too, lol.

Also, is the truck all original, or has some body parts been replaced?

So, I was watching MTV (yah, you know I'm a hypocrite) and I saw the "Bullet for a Valentine" video, and you know the guy is in a car, and he gets hit by a Chevy. The Chevy is very similar to what you have, but it's still in primer....

B4V sucks. That was an okay video when they were all playing, but otherwise, naw...

Nice, i dunno how many Orange Chevy trucks i have seen but not many.. lol

Hey, I haven't seen many either, but my math teacher drove a Candy Metalic Orange Comarrow... And that car had some power... Then again, how many math teachers listen to Korn?

#2 Its a 69, use a VIN decoder if you dont believe me.

there are a few different gauge configurations, the 3 hole style, and the one with the optional gauges like mine. Also, wood beds were an OPTION. I know these trucks pretty **** well ;)

texan_idiot25

1989-1990 Chevy 'Burb. The owner wanted the motor pulled so he could shove a big block in. So he just let my dads friend have it, to pay him back for pulling it out. So its sat for a few months, and were getting it for either $300... or $600... haha cant remember, but either way thats a good deal for a low milage fuel injected 350. Gotta get ahold of my dads friend next weekend

sweetvette
06-23-2007, 06:12 PM
sounds tight, but, your trucks not going to be getting good mpg. is this going to be like your daily driver? oh, and are you getting like the computer form the suburban too?

texan_idiot25
06-23-2007, 06:15 PM
another guy doing a similar build to my truck is getting 12 mpg, and thats with a carburated engine. Thats not bad at all.

Yup, will be my DD, dont care for gas, its cheaper here in Texas than most other places.

Well have to smash and grab an ecu and wiring harness from a junk yard probly. Then use a tuner on it, have to use headers to reach the exhaust thats already in the truck.

OHHH yes, haha. Some where I have a small parts list. Totalled around $1400. But that was mainly body, interior parts. Some electrical, suspension and a/c as well.

We may use use a 700R4 that my dad has in storage, its a 4 speed auto with over drive. Same as the 4L60E thats used in all of GMs other trucks currently, its just not electronically controlled. Much better than just the 3 speed auto it came with lol.

But the turbo-350 or 400 that came in it is beefier

texan_idiot25
06-24-2007, 11:39 AM
Not by that much. 4 speed and over drive, means a nicer drive on the freeway, and better fuel economy.

That, and the 700R4 my dad has was rebuilt to take atleast 500hp. Its gonna take this motor with no sweat.

Plus I could buy off my dad/get it free as aposed to buying a new TH350 and then needing it to be rebuilt.

Dunno, not really decided on it yet. But if we used the 700R4 then a new driveshaft would be needed since its longer than the TH350

well for daily driving and fuel economy the 700R4 is the way to go, as far as the drive shaft goes I'm sure you could find a local gear and shaft shop to build you one for a reasonable price. Also remember the tail housing is wear your tranny mounts so you will also need to relocate your cross member.

texan_idiot25

Yup, and the crossmember on this truck just bolts in place, so it will be easy to move once you break the rusted in 38 year old bolts

Im just lookin around for a local place for drive shafts. Maybe on 67-72chevytrucks.com some one makes them, the 700R4 and 4L60E are common swaps for the custom guys.

Thanks V8lover :)

Yesterday, was a good day. I found the 'toy store' of 60-87 Chevy trucks. Outback truck parts in Spring :o Fuggin, every part needed, and killer prices. So for $120 we got 2 headlight bucket adjustment plates (hard as hell to find), glove box, new hindge and spring (badly needed a right one, youll see), headlight hardware, and then trim clips and a center A/C vent. Some stuff is for later, but you couldnt beat the price at the place...

anyhoo, new hood hindge:
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p316/texanidiot25/trucks048.jpg
See anything wrong with that one?

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p316/texanidiot25/trucks049.jpg
So new hindge and spring

Before:
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p316/texanidiot25/stufff057.jpg
After
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p316/texanidiot25/trucks051.jpg
Closes flush now! :) Before, any time you opened it, the hindge bent more and more. To the point where the hood closed and you had a near 2 inch gap at the cowl.

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p316/texanidiot25/trucks050.jpg And with the trim clips the rear tail light trim I got for my bday can be used.

The engine will be here soon, when ever we can get into my dads storage center and bring home the engine stand.

A bit of an update, body work and leak proofing will begin the weekend after this one.

But, finally, located a running engine and transmission combo. Not just any, but identicle to what my truck had originally, and why is this? Its out of a 70s C10 by coincidence.

http://houston.craigslist.org/pts/431094895.html

I havent found a better deal at 750 for a solid engine and transmission. Gonna go for it Im 80% sure

The reason Im going for this, is the other engine option is unknown how it runs. Still would need an ECU, wiring, alternator, etc. This is complete, running, and with a trans. And would be **** simple to drop in and get moving, thanks to good ol' carburation

Carbs are for pussies!
Reall men use the amazing tuning options of an ECU, becuase we're not to lazy to let a stupid computer do it!

It's still a chevy. :bigwink:

EDIT: Guess I'm too used to the Scalers at R7R, but that needs some taller tires.

Uhm, so your like double ***** for having dual carbs on the honda then? ;)

Actually, the carbs (double *****) ere leaking Gas, so the place was getting so wet and sticky, so we had to take them off..

Well, he took them off becuase it leaked gas, didn't clear the hood, didn't have a air filter (an oval shape that size is HARD to find parts for. Local Honda dealer didn't have it either. LOL!), and he didn't feel like tuning it, considering it was set to a Japanese Climate on a modded Civic, not Hot and Stick Florida...

Talk about a wierd reply...

Remember. You're truck is still a Chevy.

A 350? Skip it and stuff in a 454! BWUAHAHA!!! j/k

Looking good!

I'm personally looking into getting my own project car this friday. It runs, but it needs body work and a transmission swap (auto-poo to manual, since the auto already leaks, may as well do the swap when the tranny gets out).

Hurry up and get that engine in there! I wanna hear that 350 rumble!

(for sweed) Lol, indeed a wierd reply

Remember, you drive a Honda that leaks gas and idiot mechanics that cant tune it. ;)

And also remember, some folks put small block Chevy V8s into Hondas, not the other way around.

That grill looks like its off of a 70. I drove a yellow truck just like that when I was just starting to drive, but it was a pos! You guys in those western states get all the good stuff! I am from PA and trucks like that are all rotten.

Western? Man Im in the deep south  But I am pretty lucky that the rust damage is minimal, just in the cowl vent area, passenger a-pillar, and the rockers, but those will be fixed for another time, while the cowl/a-pillar will be fixed in coming weekends to stop the water leaks in the cab

If I had the money for a 454, I would. But for 750, you will have a hard time beating that. Were seriously considering it right now, on the verge of getting it.

Project car eh? What kind?

(excuse the double post, but XMS wont load the edit button half the time)

I want THAT! Except in dark green (I don't know, I just love C10s in dark green). My dream truck is a '67 C10 stepside. No short-box here, I want the long rear end

Anyway, I'm looking into a 1992 Nissan Stanza SE (top of the line, about 1000 in North America, base. There's countless XE, and GXEs around, but SEs are scarce).

Its already got 4-wheel discs, so it makes it easy on me. My old Stanz had rear drums.

For the time being, I'm planning on fixing up the rust, fixing the tranny leak, then eventually when I have time where I don't have to drive, I'm going JDM and stuffing a JDM U12 Attesa power train on the beast! 4WD!

It'll be about a few months for the power train swap though, since extensive mods have to be done to the fuel tank to clear the exhaust and the drive shaft and sub-frame pieces.

I had a 68 C10 short bed mild custom, it was GM's Big League Blue, it was super nice when I bought it for $6,800 bucks, then I drove the crap out of it and couldn't affoard the upkeep, it was my daily driver, stupid state made me cut the rolled pan to put a bumper on the back, that sucked. I sold it for $4,000 with 65K on it since the restore, it was a good thing too, a little after that, Katrina happened and I would have been screwed, $3.20 per gallon at 8-10 miles per gallon, no way, it was a 350 with a turbo 400 auto tranny and positraction rear end, impala chasis front end , I wish I had some pics of it, but that was before I had a digital camera. It was a sweet truck. One day, hopefully I can get another one.

I guess you've got your LMC Truck catalogue ready to go?

My truck looked exactly like this only with a chrome bumper and different wheels and it had the block letter trim C H E V R O L E T along the front of the hood, so picture it with out the white shell and that was my truck, dang, now I miss it. The guy I bought it from started out asking $10K but nobody was buying so by the time I found him he was down to $8K and then I talked him down to $6,800, he needed the money to pay for the Land Rover he just bought. Not nearly as cool as the truck he built.

If anyone finds a picture of one like this in this color but a truck, please tell me where or post it.

Sounds like it was an awesome tuck. Despite the gas mileage problem, I bet its one of those "never should have sold it" moments. Plus the TH400, industructable. My tech teacher was telling how back in the day he worked at a truck shop for dump trucks and other medium-heavy duty trucks, and how often times they would pull twisted drive shafts and messed up rear axles before the TH400 even broke a sweat. My truck (1st page has its option list) is an original TH350. Turbo Hyrdomatics FTW

I lied. Took it off today to start some work on it, and shine it up a bit  My dad and I started hammering out the dents and dings. Sometime in its life, someone thought it would be a good idea to pop a dent out with a frikin spike, so we've had to hammer out lots of little dings. Also getting it straight, if you notice on the passenger side head light cut out, its pushed out some, and the very bottom left corner is dented up. Must have hit a Civic or something, its barely fazed.

Pics later when its lit out. But so you can just get an idea of how large/wide this truck is...

Buying it tomorrow, picking it up next weekend!

The guy we met is a friend of the seller, real cool guy. They have a badass little shop behind this guys house. Inside was a 40s buick. 3 1st gen Camaros (pics of 2) and a Model T

This is one of the Camaros, its a '67 (68? I know its not a '69 by the tail lights) with a 396 stroker V8, one of their racing engines.

Might as well update:

The engine swap for those who missed it: http://www.xmodsource.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10839

Santa cashed in, an aluminum radiator, and all the hoses..
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e321/texan_idiot25/xmas001.jpg

Its an after market one, and so it's trial and error with the lower radiator hose, but found a universal bendy hose that works. The biggest ***** about getting it in, is one of the top mounts. Because it's not made EXACTLY to OE specs, but shares all the dimensions, something has to be off. And what is it? The filler neck. So we have to cut a 1/4 inch radius in one mount to clear it... Fun part is the mounts are so strong, it's dulled the hole saw bit, and barely went into the metal.. so my dad is takin' it to work, and using the super tools (Cadillac Technition, been in the biz over 20 years, and Ill have to rant about his cars...)

But it's worth the effort... It sure is a purdy radiator. All aluminum, far better then the old ones. Next up, is going for a electric fan set up, to get rid of the suicidal flex-fan.

Got new tail light lenses for x-mas too, since mine were old, cracked, and barely passed light, or reflected:
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e321/texan_idiot25/CST10/xmas006.jpg
Easy to tell which is new

Head light bezels too, will paint them flat black.. their too shiney for my grille, and I like them blacked out more.
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e321/texan_idiot25/CST10/xmas008.jpg

And finally remembered to check the axle, I knew it was a dana, but wasn't sure which. Well, ladies and gents, Im rocking the world-destroying Dana 60.
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e321/texan_idiot25/CST10/xmas010.jpg

Seemingly, a very rare option for a truck like mine. Its a Semi-Floating axle. And the Full-floating 8-lug 60s were used on the 3/4 and 1-ton trucks. And some of the big block half tons with the TH400 trans had the Dana 60 as a semi-floating 6-lug, like mine. Where it gets odd is because my truck was originally a SB350 and TH350, as it is now.

Gotta love that old built-to-order system these trucks have.

Man, I just need a set of long-tube headers for this beast, and I can get a test drive in.

That dana is burnout proof, and I have 4 tires to burn off, haha.. All of the tires on this truck are bad. Ill just keep them mounted on the rim, and use them for burn out tires.

But yeh, you have no clue how much I want to drive it. It's something else to sit in that truck now. You step on the gas, and carb opens up. You slide the shifter, and the transmission clicks through the gears. Went under and greased up all the suspension and driveshaft joints last weekend. With a set of headers, and a good brake check, it's ready for a test drive.

You can get rebuilt frames from some companies, that prep for air bags and such. But basically, with starting with just a frame and cab, you can build a truck. Roughly 70-80% of the parts for it are available... And some parts are shared from the later trucks. You can swap the whole front suspension from the later 70s trucks onto this.

Slowly fillin' 'er up.

Happy much? I'll bet it feels great to have it running...

texan_idiot25
02-09-2008, 10:14 PM
My cell phone doesn't like being anywhere near open headers. But my god, it is LOUD, it's DEEP, it's a fuggin' BEAST, and I love it. But when hooked up to the exhaust, it sounds toned and mean. A nice low rumble at idle, but you jab the throttle, and it opens up nice. Some-what like a Blowmaster, but better, and with out the in-a-can sound.

The closest I can say to this truck, is Christine. Go watch that a few times, and you get a good feel for how this beast sounds.

Yes, I am, really. ****ing. Excited!

Gotta do a few things before I can really let it run for any length of time. The trans fluid needs to be topped off, since plenty spilled out in the process of installing the engine/trans. Gotta re-route the trans cooler lines, since they hit the headers. Their supposed to go under the engine, and we accidentally routed them through the frame-side of the motor mount while dropping the engine in. Then gotta put something of a heat shield for the starter. Then just run a fuel line to a can of gas for now until the gas tank is checked. Change all the spark plug boots to angled ones as well.

Ah, it's good to sit down, turn the key, pump the gas, and hear it come to life.

texan_idiot25

Got some work today, good and bad news.

texan_idiot25
02-23-2008, 10:16 PM
Thanks dude. The interior color depends mainly on the seats. But I'm aiming for that cream white. Then, possibly, do the roof white as well, since I gotta do body work to the passenger a-pillar anyways, and the chances of the new coat of orange matching is pretty low.

Well, curiosity killed the vacuum gauge, I decided to install the clock. :p Took alot more work then I had thought, but it looks good in there.

I would rather have a vacuum gauge they are great for diagnosing driveability stuff. However the clock is a nice touch and blends so well

It's an optional gauge, that my truck didn't come with. And trust me, the OE parts are really fuggin expensive. Just gotta touch up the tops of the needles orange. Gonna repaint the bezel this week as well. Since the black/silver on it is rough.

But enough about the clock, how bout that motor. :p I'm as happy as a puppy with two petters with that thing's sound.

3rd gen Camaro tachs fit right in pretty well. But the repo of the original tach (which is what goes in that hole) is **** expensive.

It's 2wd, not gonna be the best mudder.

This is not the original paint, it was originally red. For now, yes I'll just stick with the orange. When we goto do the body work on the passenger a-pillar, and it needs paint, unless a new coat of orange matches up with the current color, may go and do a white two tone:

Sad part is, there is more technology in this one clock, then my entire truck, lol.

Sometimes technology is not all it is cracked up to be. :) Compare how simple the 69 is to work on as opposed to a new 08 pickup. How many people regularly work on a 2008 in their backyard? Sometimes I think they are getting too complex.

Very nice. I kinda like your idea of doing the roof in white. I think either way it will be sweet.

I couldn't agree more, and this is the main reason why I love to work on this truck, but hate having to mess with my firebird (took some work to get it street legal). I can sit next to my engine, with my feet on the frame rails and work on it. Yet, I can barely reach the belt-tensioner pully on our 98 GMC Jimmy, and that thing is still pretty simple! Plus, with this truck (gonna miss this if/when I lower it), is that I can simply crawler under and work on it so easily. Haven't needed a jack stand yet.

But thanks man, I've noticed you have been watching this, finally you commented  I'm glad to get this far, simply can't wait to get it on the road some.

This weekend I'm going to the houston meet, then the next my dad and I will get on the fuel system. Gotta pull the tank out and inspect it, and run new fuel lines. I'll have the clock and guage cluster finished this week. Gotta run to the store and pick up some silver/chrome paint.

How about them brakes?
Everything good there?
Brake booster is rusted, But personally tells me nothing, How do the brakes work? Im sure they'll take some fluid and bleeding,?

texan_idiot25

I don't need brakes. The back bumpers of Hondas will do just fine for slowing me down..

The brakes are fine, they work.. but it's still 4 wheel drums, and it ain't the best. The near future I'll convert it to front disks. As far as the rust on the booster, it's just surface rust.

One ton was the C/K 30, and don't think the 283 inline 6 was in them. They were mostly big block and SB350 trucks.

C= 2wd
K= 4wd

10= half ton
20= 3/4 ton
30= 1 ton

CST is the top trim level in 69 & 70. Cheyenne in the 71 & 72

Went with amber. Original is the clear. But, why not be different? Plus it looks good with the truck. And gives me an excuse to go get a new set of side markers sooner or later too  And if I ever feel any different, I can toss the old ones back on.

dontspamme-Aiming to have it test driving soon, realistically, just need to finish the fuel system and check the tank for rust. Hope to have it on the road by the summer.

Picked up some cool old vintage stuff from my great-grandmothers:
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e321/texan_idiot25/IMG_5545.jpg

Going to clean both up, and where the good one on the right has green, paint in orange with both. My Great-grandma thinks they came with her Coronet when it was new back in the day. Not sure, but they look cool!

Hopefully will have this thing finished in the summer. The Firebird is giving me high-mileage hell at the moment. The semi-plan is to keep it long enough to save enough in the bank, and then when I sell it, have enough to bust-*** on the truck for a few weeks and get it done... That's if another 2 car purchases don't interfere

It's a sad addiction, but I found an early-mid 70s GMC C2500 (http://73-87.com/7387info/ads_GM/73_gmc.jpg)for possibly under 50 bucks at a used car lot... calling them tomorrow... and also looking into doing the 24 hours of LeMons with some friends and racing in october.

Got a good bit of work done on it today. Custom made a fan-shroud support and filler panel. Ghetto-bent the angle into it... By sandwhiching it between 2x4s, and using the wieght of the truck to hold them down (lifted the rear tire, put the stack under it, lowered the truck onto the stack), then using pry-bars at 1st, and then onto other 2x4s, bent the angle into the aluminum.

Is the truck near finish?

Have I answered the question before?

I would have to say engine, drivetrain, cooling, suspension, braking and fuel systems are a lot more important then headlights when the truck is not ready for the road. Priorities Eric, priorities. ;)

Thanks man. Thankfully the fan shroud (out of an unknown year Chevy truck) fits in with some trimming to the area around the fan, and that cover seals up the top and provides the mounting.

Your actually dead on with the ram-air  The headlight mounts have a large 4-5 inch hole to clear the head light buckets, and the Radiator Core Support also has the same sized hole for clearence as well. So we're going to run intake tubing from the air cleaner, to just behind those holes. The headlight and bezel will keep rain out when driving.

Despite common thinking, the OE style air cleaners with the intake tubes out the side are better for performance then the typical open element, doesn't pull air for directly over a hot engine. And flow can be fixed with a bit of persuasion.

AGH, you should hear it in person dude. My god mother came in town this weekend (showing off the Porsche picked up... Totally makes up for buying a Nissan SUV a few years back), and her daughter was with her. So we started up the Chevy, and ahhhhhhhahahahaha, I still can't get over how lovely the thing sounds.

Talking to a fellow hotrodder today, he mentioned a good steam cleaning has a **** fine chance of cleaning all that out. Looking into it.

But, thank god for Chevy love... I've been offered to pick up a tank from another member of 67-72chevy trucks from his wrecked truck. So, I might be scoring a tank and new sending unit out of this deal for cheap!

Once that's done, start it up, test the newly rebuilt (for the 3rd time) alternator, and may get a test drive in!

And, also...

THIS IS WHY WHEN YOU STORE A CAR, YOU STORE THE CAR WITH A GOD**** FULL TAKE OF GAS AND STABILIZER!

Thank you

texan_idiot25
11-08-2008, 04:29 PM
Gotta figure out some things 1st! There's two ways to make these fit in the rear with no problem. these are for a late model Chevy truck/SUV, and while the bolt pattern is the same, the back spacing isn't wide enough for tires to clear. Option 1 is to use a set of spacers w/longer wheel studs, which would allow the rim to fit w/out machining it, or the hub. Keeps the tires out of the bed and saves on machining costs. Also could shove some fatter tires on too and really fill up those wheel wells :)

2nd plan is to tub the bed a few inches, and machine that axle hubs to fit the rims, but not looking as likely of a plan.

The rims will fit up front with no problem once disk brakes are done up.

I think the wheels will look great once the truck is lowed a bit and with the tires on. The 2-1/2 in drop spindles up front (when I do disk brakes) and 3in in rear will do it nicely.

Mainly a gas tank, and brakes and some other junk. $$$ is the only obstical. But, depending if I can get another job (closer to home), I may sell the Firebird and put that cash into getting this sucker on the road.

Free really is a price you can't beat I know, but let me say this..

I got a deal on a set of wheels so I bought them, they were the proper offset for a 4th gen, not a 3rd gen. You should know Texan, it would have required at the minimum 2" spacers to make them clear. I decided to go against it and sold those wheels for a set that would fit my car, and I definitely didn't regret it.

I would sell those and buy a set that will just bolt right on, do you really want to go through all of that hassle just to install a set of wheels? Yeah, you might like them.. I loved my first set and they would have looked killer, but I still wouldn't change it that I sold them.

I personally believe that longer studs and spacers aren't safe, you could get adapters that bolt onto your stock studs and then have another set of studs sticking out of the adapter to bolt the wheel to, but that would require ALOT of lug nuts, double the work of putting on the wheels.. I really just don't think they are worth it.
