well i was cruisin down folly beach one night and as soon as i realised i didnt have my phone....BAM!!.....flat tire.
i got lucky and remembered my brother in laws ex lived right around the corner. cool someplace to store my bike until i can come back with the trailer.
log story short i got it back home and took the wheel off and down to the bike shop i go.
they told me that putting a new tube in the tire would cost me 85.00 usd.
i told em to shove it and started thinking about the 440 mag i had sittin in my shed.
all in all it was an easy swap.
i had to have a spacer cut and bend the brake brace slightly to accomodate the larger tire. 100/90/16 to 130/90/16
overall im happy with the turn out.
i love the look of the bigger tire and the hanlding has improved a bit and will probably get even better once the tire is broke in.

just wondering, but are you doin a full motor rebuild too? I see that you allready replaced the filter, but on old(er) bikes like that you should take the whole thing apart and get rid of the sludge and other stuff. You should also take the bike to a dyno and have someone you trust (who has the software) to do a full a/f ratio checkup on that think. They usually run too lean down in the low RPM's and get way way WAY too rich in the higher RPM's. Right now, it's probally robbing you of power (that awesome fun factor) and gas milage (the wallet breaking factor). I hope you can use the tips I have to make you bike (which looks great by the way, major props) last longer, and live healthier.

ok, time to tackle this one.......
this bike is FAR from finished and only gets road time about 20-30 miles a month.
i baby the hell out of this bike because i know the shape that its in and i know all of the faults of the early, low cc kz's.
this bike had 9611 miles on it when i bought it, but has the normal 20+yr old problems.
the paint thats on it now is rattlecan and the reason behind this is i can take it on poker runs and cruises and not have to worry about people snickering over the crappy stock paint.

once i get everything dialed in the way i want it this bike is getting COMPLETLEY torn apart down to frame and rebuilt.
the carbs are going to be sent to a freind who is mastered.
the heads will be honed and polished then covered in vht flat black with the cooling fins,cam/sprocket covers polished.
new gaskets/seals.
most of the major motor components have been purchsed just not installed.
this isnt my first restoration nor will it be my last.
i love vintage moto's
the stock hp on this bike is 35hp. bottom line...there isnt much to do about that besides pod filters and a rejet,2into1 exaust.
i could bore the cylinders and slap in 440 pistons but it seems easier to just go with the 440 heads. either way its more work(dollar wise)then im willing to put into this bike.
i can hit 98mph topspeed with the larger rear tire and thats plenty for me on an early production.
i plan on switching the gearing to a 15t front and 46r for more torque to make this lil 400 a wheelie monster.
i can bring the fronts up with the twist of the throttle in 1-2 as it is, with the new gearing i should be able to bring it up in third and fight to keep it down in 1-2.

XMODKID33,
i take that as an insult, your a cool guy but apehangers are *** as hell on choppers. let alone on a cafe/fighter style bike.
IMHO, function should never follow form.
there is no benefit to apehangers...in fact they take away from the handleing and performance of ANY bike.

THRILLBILLY/kid zim,
tell your buddy to check outhttp://kz400.com for usefull info on what the bike is and what it could be.
this is the most knowledgable site i have found to date on the kz series.
odd ivar(ibsen) knows just about anything you can ask him.

thanks all for checking my bike out and thanks for the input.

cheers,

bondo
