I've never built one personally, but I can imagine that patience is a major bonus with building one of these, and paying extra attention to everything. Just take your time, read the instructions thoroughly and don't get frustrated.

It will take a little time, you probably could do it in a day if you stuck to it but I wouldn't recommend it.

Thanks Kevin, it took me a while just so I can afford the kit! The RTR version comes with a 27T motor, for sure that they are not super fast, but still have a nice amount of speed. The motor I ordered is a 45T, still waiting for it.

That is exactly what I ended up doing this weekend. :)
Nice!

The hardest thing is to save up for all those expensive parts. Other than that, it's definitely not hard to build.

You are right about that! It's possible to build the whole kit in 1 day. I just took my time on it.

Update: So I've been driving my SCX10 in the water/mud a lot recently...

http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x396/Dr_Kustom01/Axial%20SCX10/P8170692.jpg

And I think that it is time to take it apart and re-build it. So I've seen that people like to use marine grease inside the axles and tranny to prevent metal parts from rusting. Unfortunately, I couldn't find marine grease locally. Instead, I've picked up a Castrol multi-purpose chassis grease. I read through the label from the back, sounds similar to the purpose of the marine grease. So I decided to give it a try.

http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x396/Dr_Kustom01/Axial%20SCX10/IMGP0148-5.jpg

I've took the entire tranny and axles apart for clean up and re-lube with the Castrol grease.

Rusty bearings.

http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x396/Dr_Kustom01/Axial%20SCX10/P8180715.jpg

How are you liking the Holmes Hobbies motor?
I bought my motor and ESC as a combo. It let you pick 35T/45T/55T, I picked 45T, it's a nice motor, very easy to maintenance. The motor have a lot of torque, but not too much speed, it's a slow walking pace. I'm looking to order the Cobalt Puller 7T motor once they are in stock.

Lucky7

The hobby shop I got my Honcho at only had Venom motors. I got a 55t and it works quite well but I have been thinking I would like a little more speed and have been looking at the 35t HH motors. Want something faster but still a scale trail truck speed.

The 35T are what most of the scaler guys use. It have a little more speed, won't be extremely fast.

you just have to soldier your ESC wires to the tabs. i may be wrong but like any other brushed motor it comes with just the motor, meaning no wires

just solder the esc wires onto the motor

most high end brushed motors do not come with wires.

Good to know. I have only dealt with Clodbuster motors, a CC01 motor and a venom 55t all of which had the wires attached. Kind of figured the higher end motors were wireless but wanted to confirm so I was not surprised.

Small update: I sold all my 1.9 wheels, and order some new 1.55 wheels yesterday, hopefully they will show up within a week or two.

Update: So I sold the 2S Li-Po a few weeks ago, and upgraded to 3S, with deans plug conversion!

http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x396/Dr_Kustom01/Axial%20SCX10/IMGP0145-8.jpg

I also sold all my 1.9 wheels...to get those 1.55! RC4WD 1.55 OEM steel bead lock rims with 1.55 Mickey Thompson Baja Claw TTC tires.

http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x396/Dr_Kustom01/Axial%20SCX10/IMGP0144-8.jpg

Each rims were packaged separately.

http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x396/Dr_Kustom01/Axial%20SCX10/IMGP0146-8.jpg

http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x396/Dr_Kustom01/Axial%20SCX10/IMGP0147-8.jpg

Now that I switched to 3S Li-Po, I won't be able to mount it on the original location without raising the body mounts to the highest setting, and I don't want to mount the battery at the rear of the chassis, because I want to keep the truggy bed. So, it's time to relocate all the electronic.

I picked up a project enclosure box from RS, to store the receiver and 3Racing light kit. Before I place the receiver in the box, I put it in a balloon and zip tie the end of the balloon to keep the water out of it.

http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x396/Dr_Kustom01/Axial%20SCX10/IMGP0149-9.jpg

Now for the ESC, I'm still running the Holmes Hobbies TorqueMaster BR-XL, the one I got is waterproofed already. So I took the original receiver box that comes with the SCX10, and put the ESC in there, to keep the mud/sand off the heat sink and mount it all the way at the front of the chassis.

http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x396/Dr_Kustom01/Axial%20SCX10/IMGP0150-7.jpg

As for the battery, I could not mount it up front, due to how big the battery case is. So I mount it right above the receiver box.

**** that thing has got some zip!

I just received an HH BR-XL and 13T Crawlmaster motor for my latest build. Its all set up and hopefully I can take it for a spin. If it works as good as it looks I am planning to get a 35T Torquemaster for my SCX10. I see you running the Cobalt Puller and and how zippy your truck is yet it seems to do slow very well. Thoughts and opinion on it? Advantage over a Torquemaster or Crawlmaster?

few questions though, do the wheel wells affect maneuvers at all? like climbing rocks and stuff?
does the sponge filter affect motor performance? only i tried it once and it ruined my motor?

I've tried out 3 different motors with many different gearing on this truck; Tekin Heavy Duty 35T, TorqueMaster Sport 45T and the Cobalt Puller 7T. The 35T and 45T are very similar, both are 540 size. They share the same motor cans, only differences are the armature they have in the can, the 35T have more top speed and the 45T have more torque. They are both very easy to re-build. Now for the Cobalt Puller 7T, it offers much higher top speed with very stable low end torque. It's a 550 size motor, the can is a bit longer than the 540, but it will still fit fine on the tranny without any problem. I've lowered the gear ratio on the axles and tranny to get the most speed out of it, and yet the 7T still offer a great low end throttle.

I haven't try the CrawlMaster motor, so I don't have any thoughts on that.

The wheel wells have no affect to the suspension. They are mounted high enough even when the suspension are fully compressed, the wheels will not rub against the wheel wells. There are also spacers behind the shocks mounting point, it off-set the shocks with the wheel wells. They does great job keeping the mud and water out of the motor and tranny.

So far, I haven't had any problem with the filter on the motor yet. Because the Cobalt Puller 7T motor have a big open area on the end bells, so the filter will keep the brushes dust off the chassis and keep the mud/water (if any) away from the brushes.

After the run, I took the motor apart and re-build it. It definitely need a clean up and some new brushes.

It's an awesome motor. :bigwink: But I'm still curious to see how well does a Brushless set up do with the SCX10. :p

Took the SCX10 to Central Park today, along with a friend and his heli.

mind me asking what container you used for the wheel wells?
was it already curved in that shape or was there some bending/shaping from you?

thanks

You can use the Clorox bleach bottle or any round food container that have a flat bottom.

Update: Got the Castle Creation BEC installed. No more throttle cut off!

Thanks John! Would love to see a pic of your 1:1 Taco. I wish there are more snow over here in NY. All the snow got melted within 2 days, it was 25F 2 days ago and today was like 54F. The weather is crazy.

No big deal on the front bumper, as I didn't plan on keeping it on the truck for long anyway.

Hopefully you can get your hands on one of those Axial rigs, they are awesome!

Update: One of my HID light bulbs gave up on me, so I decided to switch back to the OEM light bulbs.

Simple and clean, I like it. :) For the yellow headlight lenses, try sand papers and rubbing compounds.

I am really liking your tire and wheel combo. Ever since I got the Wraith with 2.2 tires my SCX10s 1.9s are looking small. I might try the 2.2s on it but I think they might be too big looking. Your tires look bigger but not hugely bigger.

Thanks Lucky7! I'm using 1.55 tires, they are called Baja Claw and its about few mm taller than the 1.9 Flat Iron tires.

No exactly sure on the cost, but probably not cheap.
