As many of you know that I bought a Losi micro rock crawler not too long ago, stock out of the box is fun, but tbh its not scale enough. So I ordered a Aoshima Toyota Hilux Double Cab to use it for a scaler project. The kit showed up today. I didn't waste any time, get started on it right away. So far, I have the front axle 90% mounted. I have did many model kit trucks conversion, but this is my first building a scaler, so if any of you have any tips, feel free to share it. Now its time for pics.

This is how it sits now.

Haha, I'll try to get the F/R axles mount for now, then extend the driver shaft, mount the servo, ESC, etc. Basically, I just wanted to make it drivable for now.

Update: I like the stock tires that comes with the micro rock crawler, but they are not scale enough for me, so I went back to the Aoshima Super Swamper Tires. Also mounted some new rims.

are you going to be lowering the truck any further? becuase sitting that high it doesnt look much like a scaler, just a mini monster truck or mudder.

Like mycrors4 said, it started off as a 1/24 Losi Micro Rock Crawler, I'm using a 1/25 Aoshima Toyota Hilux Double Cab as the model kit conversion.

Why so creative guy (: Suspension even looks scale. If this was FB, i would like and unlike 9000 times. Plan on keeping the stock crawler tires? (:
Thanks Kevin, I was inspired by a member from Scale4x4 in this project, and I'm keeping the stock tires. :p

From the last update, the truck was only a mock up, the ride height will be lower than that.

Update: Lowered the ride height a little, also moved the front axle forward, front suspension links mounted. (In the photos, there's no suspension shocks installed on the chassis)

This will be the ride height when its done.

Stock front bumper, don't really like the look of it, so they got to go, I will be building a custom one in the future.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/IMGP1413.jpg

Added front fender flares, and since the front axle is moved forward, I had to chop off a bit of the wheel well to clear up the tires from turning. (Fender flares are just a mock up)

Thanks mycrors4, I have seen a few people using model kit chassis to do the conversion, that's where I got the idea from. :p And I do plan on getting some alloy lug nuts in the future, the one I have on in the last update, I just borrowed it from one of my cars.

As said on Scale 4X4, looks fantastic. Much better than my first attempt! Are you planning on doing leafs for it or not?
Thanks Stampedekid, matter fact, I did have plan for the leafs suspension, it's in the new update. I also notice you did the leafs set up on your crawler, good to see another micro crawler owner using leafs.

Update: Was been busy recently, but I got back into it today, got the rear axle mounted on leaf springs.

Looks better every time. How are Paul's tires as far as softness and everything? I was thinking of ordering a set but of the TSL boggers that he did up. Also I'm guessing you did the pull back springs like "B" did on his? Lastly, are you planning on ditching those rear shocks or going to do similar to what he did, also? I'm actually really enjoying your build, I remember going through similar things not too long ago with my build, hopefully you're getting as much enjoyment out of it as I did. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'd be more than happy to help :)

Thanks, I have moved the rear axle a little toward to the end of the chassis, now it have a longer wheelbase.

Haha, the leaf springs are coils from those little pull back cars.

Thanks, I haven't have a set of those Paul made super swampers, I only got the TSL boggers from him, they are about the same size as the stock micro crawler tires, but they are a lot heavier, those TSL boggers I have on my Pajero are from Paul btw. Correct, I got the leaf springs idea from B also. I have the rear shocks mounted to the chassis but I mounted them toward to the side of the chassis.

Update: New improved leaf springs mounts. I'm using screws with large threads, and sand down the plate that hold the leaf springs in place, now when it flex, the leaf won't slip out anymore. Also, mounted up the rear shocks, started to work on the rear end, and made front body mounts, using 2 small screws to attach the body to the model chassis.

Not very much at all, just a lot of time. I'm still working on mine and I started back in late December :o
Anyway looks better and better each step with it, Doc. Does the axle slide any bit with that setup. Mine slides just a tad bit, with my setup on the rear leafs. What did you and 'B' use for it? I've seen a few use Styrene but I'm curious.

Thanks Stampedekid, with the improved leaf mounts, the leaf springs slip anymore. As for the plate that hold down the leaf springs, they are the side piece that hold up the servo mount.

Thanks KITT222, like Stampedekid said, those little rig does take a long time to finish, so I don't plan on building another one soon after I finish with this one.

Thanks man, the steering link I made from last update got broken during test run, so I made another one, and it doesn't have any bump steer.

Thanks KITT222, I don't plan on using the bed that comes with the kit, I'll make my own truggy bed, that holds the battery and spare tires.

Update: Got the front drive shaft extended, and the old steering link broke, so I made a new one.

As on Scale 4x4, looks great. Good thing you didn't try the front leafs, its nearly impossible(atleast to me) Does shaving the servo mounting blocks for the rear leafs really make much a difference because one of mine keeps slipping whereas the other is held in good.

Thanks, I was going to change the front suspension to leaf set up also, but the real Hilux have front independent suspension and rear leaf suspension, so I just keep the shocks on front and use leaf at the rear. To make those servo mounting block hold better, you have to file them down till they turn to a flat smooth surface, because stock mounting block have a bumpy surface, thats why when the leaf flex, it will slip out of the mounts.

Like mycrors4 said, it started off as a Losi Micro Rock Crawler, with a Aoshima Toyota Hilux Double Cab model kit conversion.

Thank you very much guys! For the battery in the bed, I might just leave it as its, for easier to take it out and recharge them. For the tube work on the bed, I started off with 1 side first, I use Krazy Glue to glue them on, once they are set, I measure them, and write down all the numbers, then make the copy for the other side.

Update: Got the bed painted! Also added some details at the bottom of the chassis.

Central park is far from me too and no nothing on Scale yet we still need to decide dates. Most of us are from Long Island(myself included) and well I can't drive so I'll probably get driven to the train station then either one of my parents would take the train in to the city. One of my buddies down on the south shore said central park has some really nice rock areas(he has a Honcho). But the truggy looks good! Thanks for everyone's comments. The cargo bags are made out of jeans. The ESC, motor and transmission are hiding right under it. Those Rox Lox are huge, when suspension are fully compressed, I only have about 0.5mm clearance between the tires and the wheel well. As for the steel bead lock rims, they aren't that hard to install, but sometimes those tiny screws and nuts can get really annoying. 1 thing I hate about the the rims is that the screws are too close to each other, made it kinda hard to put the lug nuts on, and wish the rims are a little bit smaller. But other than that, they are great!

Thanks B, yea a little more traction would be nice, also the place where I drove it in the video, the dirt and rocks are really loose, that's why every time I crawl there, all the truck does is dig holes.

Update: It's been one...two...three...four months. I had a great time with this Hilux, took it to do all kind of extreme off-roading I can think of.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PB100764.jpg
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PB100766.jpg

Recently I did something to it and broke the frame...:uhoh:
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC030902.jpg

So guess its time for a re-build! Looking through my model kit junkyard and found an 4Runner and older model Hilux chassis.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC030903.jpg

I picked the 4Runner chassis to work with because it have a longer wheelbase and almsot line up with this Hilux double cab.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC040904.jpg

First thing I did was chopped off the rear wheel well, so the bed can sit flush on the chassis.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC040905.jpg

Then I got rid of the transmission so the front axle will have more clearance. For the front suspension, I borrowed an idea off bubbles_bizzo from Scale4x4. Using the model kit shocks and turn it into a functional shocks.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC040906.jpg
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC040907.jpg
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC040908.jpg

Even though the rear wheel well is chopped, but it still doesn't clear the wheels.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC040909.jpg

So I had to trim it up a bit more to get it line up with the bed's wheel wells.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC050910.jpg

Got the bed mounted to the chassis.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC050911.jpg

Here are some rims I'm planning on using for this truck. They are Volks Racing TE37 off the Mini-Z NSX AutoScale. Have been racing Mini-Z using those rims, so they aren't in perfect condition.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC050913.jpg
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC050914.jpg
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC050915.jpg

Here's a step by step on how I got those Mini-Z rims to fit on the LMC axle.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC050916.jpg
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC050917.jpg
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC050918.jpg
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC050920.jpg
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC050921.jpg
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC050923.jpg

I also installed a Mini-Z AWD spings in the front shocks to get a little damping.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC050922.jpg

After the TE37 got primed.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC050924.jpg

Those TE37 are very nice rims, but IMO they just aren't the perfect match for the Super Swampers. So I choose some Aoshima rims, those rims still ain't what I'm really looking for, but they seems to be a better fit with those tires, so they will do for now. (I used the same concept to mount those rims as I did with the Mini-Z rims.)
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC050925.jpg
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC060926.jpg

Last but not least. Got the body mounted.

http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/PC060936.jpg

Though I said it, but anyway, welcome back XXX! :bigwink: Thanks for the compliment. The rims are made by RC4WD, they are steel bead lock rims. But RC4WD discontinued making them already. The tires over those rims are Rok Lox, they are also made by RC4WD.

As I was about to get the tail gate re-install, I found that one of the supporting tabs was missing...

http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Dr_Kustom/Losi%20Micro%20Rock%20Crawler/P1110667.jpg

So I go ahead and chopped off the tab on the other side.

Make a new supporting piece from a paper clip and glue it directly to the bottom of the tail gate.

Sorry guys. Photobucket removed all 3,000+ pics, they are still in my old account, but it's not visible when I post them up on forums. I notice all of the pics from every single one of my threads are removed. It way too much to recover all those pics at this point. I've already created a new Photobucket account and will be re-post the last update very shortly.

Edit: Re-post the last update.

Update: Here's a little teaser of the modified Ferrari F40 rims.
