December '08 "Open Class" COTM Voting Thread:

Howdy,

First, let me start off by saying that this thread took more than two hours and four pages in Microsoft Word, and I thank you for that. This is what makes Xmodsource, Xmodsource. Thank you for your cooperation, time and dedication towards this hobby and this forum. Without all of these entrants, this wouldn’t be the largest in Xmodsource History! Again, thank you, and I hope to see this many entrants in the future! :)

To my count, there are twenty-five entrants this month! That’s the most we’ve had this year, or any year, on Xmodsource. I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation towards those of you who participated and tried to participate. Good luck to you all! May the New Year bring you many new ideas and awesome creations for future Car of the Months!

Now, for the part everyone wants to hear about… the prizes!

For this COTM, the first place and second place winners will be receiving a prize. First place will receive a new in box GenIII Corvette Xmod. The box has been sitting on my desk for the past month and a half making me drool; now it finally gets to go to its proper home. The second place winner will be receiving an Xmods Touring AWD upgrade, Xmods Touring Suspension upgrade and the Xmods Command Logic Light kit; all new in box.

I'm feeling Lancer_Mans Hummer, but it doesnt look like it can go offroad at all, the articulation doesnt go far, because it looks like the tires are too big. But the paint job is badass too.

This one by far will be the hardest. I just hope I get atleast a couple votes, I dont care if I win, but I just want to get a couple votes though.

its not always about having hte most custom car. Its the originality, and how much it appeals to everyone. you have a TON of money wrapped into yours, theres no question about that. But there is some seriously tuff competetion this COTM, and more cars than yours with probably more time and effort put into them. Dont take it personally your not getting any votes.. its a hard comp this month... but i agree with you to a point, that i do find it complete BS you dont have one single vote... that seems odd to me, before it started i thought u would do quite well. but then again, i thought suicide and his saleen was going to run away with this competition... shows how much i know lol.

Read that again.. I Don't take any of this personally, and It doesn't matter to me to win, and there are some GREAT cars in this comp. "It's the originality" hmmm mines not original. Also to say that there are more cars that have more time into it then mine is crazy (Not that no one put alot of time in theirs) And I take offense to say that my car is just aluminum upgrades and electronics, and that the body had no time in it. There is months in this car.

I am responding to that post only because I DID take some offense in it. Otherwise I was very content about not getting votes. I thought the comp this month was CUSTOM car, not body on stock chassis or vise versa. Congrats to the winner.

I'd have to say that the best body and the most work should win, personal preferences aside. Chassis, unless you scratch build one, take no more than a few hours tops be it FET upgrade or something else. I hardly consider swapping parts work. Also, if you don't do any body work, then all your work on the guts is hidden under a crappy stock body which ruins the overall appeal.

IMO these competitions should have at least one rule that say, 60% of the overall car (chassis and body) must be modded in some way that is not easily replicable nor uses stock parts. Then we'll see crazier body work or chassis hacking that defenetly takes alot of time.

this isnt about building the most wildly upgraded car on the planet. its about building the car that appeals to the community. and that doesnt always take 500 bucks in hobby grade ESC's and aluminum and custom chassis.

leave the COTM alone, its been working perfect for longer than you've been around. no need for change.

When you take something that's supposed to be fun and enjoyable and turn it into an argument, that's just not ok with me. ;) If it has to come to it, I will turn to infraction points as well as locking this thread, making it only possible to vote, not post.

First, pointing fingers and deliberately leaving a posted message saying someone does not have as much time and effort into their submission as anyone else is a definite no-no. Not only has everyone probably worked their butts off to get such a high quality submission, but they probably spent days thinking, planning, buying and working on their submission. Judging on pure aesthetics and time consumption isn't the way things should be done. It takes more than that.

Second, the use of the term originality is quite petty. Seeing as how everyone’s submission is their own, that already makes it original. No one is going to have the exact same submission as you. Making it original already; by adding more and more to your submission, you’re just taking yourself farther and farther away from the pack.

Third, everyone’s submission is custom in its own way, no matter what anyone says. The second you touch it, it is your own and it’s custom in your own special way. By the time you get down to the simple facts of what has been done, added and subtracted from your submission, it is by far anything besides custom. It’s yours. It’s original, it’s custom and it’s yours.

Fourth, this was an open class Car of the Month. Simply meaning, anything Xmods based was allowed, including stock Xmods. You could have done something as simple as changed the motor and it would have been allowed into the competition. Is this going to get you to win? Hell no, not by a long shot. It takes a lot of time, effort, customization and your own simple touch of originality to make it a winner.

Fifth, this is supposed to be fun!!! Trust me, I’m truly sorry for anyone that feels that they’re not getting any votes, but that’s the way it all works during the Car of the Month competitions on any and every forum. Very seldom do you see a competition where the winner is very close to the second place winner; including those that only contain two members. The winner typically walks away a good few posts ahead of the second place winner and there’s typically even a further gap from second to the rest of the pack.

Sixth, when you see stuff brought to the table like everyone’s past few favorites on the forum, it’s very hard for yourself to get any votes. Sadly, this is just how things work for everyone and anyone. To be honest, I’m amazed at the current poll results; I myself was even very inaccurate when it came to predicting who would sweep this competition. My hats off to all of the contestants for sure.

Lastly, if you have any further problems or questions with how a Car of the Month competition works, you may contact me via Private Message or through AIM. I would rather not see a voting thread dragged too far off topic. Let’s please return back to topic now.

I'm just saying push the required minimum a little bit higher, so just a paintjob or chassis part swaps don't cut it. Fitting a new body on is way more work than say, just spraying a body, and so forth.

Thats simply how I feel; I'm not pointing any fingers and I liked alot of more simple/clean entries, but as a whole I'd like to see some more extensive works. I'll try to cook something up for the next compt XMS will have because I just couldn't make the deadline for this one.

You're asking to much of people, Skv. This is an online forum with a very wide age range. Some people here can't comprehend the extensive amount of time or value that goes into someones entry because they aren't lucky enough to do it themselves. It's not because they're stupid or ignorant, it's just simply because they've never had the chance. Sadly, Car of the Month competitions are basically voted upon as a "what I like the best because it looks the best." Is that right? Probably not, no. Is that the way it's always been and always be on pretty much every Xmods orientated forum? Yeah.

You have to remember the age ranges you're dealing with. People don't base their whole lives around this and due to that fact, do not have enough time, willpower or determination to create something that will be "totally fricken awesome" and win every XMS COTM. This is a hobby.

Quote me trashing people's work? I'm saying that everyone should just do 1 or 2 more steps beyond what they did already for the sake of competition and to better their skills. I know that majority of folks should have the time to work or at least be able to plan time to work on their entrees. I like the entrees overall, but I want to encourage people to enter their best works/attempts.

I go to school five days a week. Right after i get out i go straight to work till ten/eleven. i stay up doing homework till one/two. then i go to sleep, wake up at five, and do it all again. by the weekend i am bone tired and i just end up sleeping till ten. i get up, eat, do homework and usually by then its time to go to work again. same thing on sundays. the fact that i still found the time to even look at an xmod car is amazing. and im sure that every person on here who has created a car is proud of his or her work. and im sure that they all have stories to tell regarding their cars. so please, like the topic of abortion, leave this one ALONE...

That's trashing. People worked their ***** off, no matter what the entry was. Some people may not live up to your expectations, but they certainly surpassed mine this month.

Really, you're pointlessly ranting. Nothing you can say or do is going to change the outcome of this competition or the outcome of any competition here on Xmodsource. People are still going to create submissions in which they wanted to create, not what other people want them to create. You can't change the opinions of sixty six people (that's the current amount of people who have voted on this pole), let alone the hundreds of people on this website who do modifications to their Xmods day in and day out.

Dont think I'm "Trashing", as what you said, but I dont think everybody really tried. You know if bondo was still here, and entered, he would have worked hard (in my opinion). I think SPR worked pretty hard. I would say I didnt work very hard, because I didnt car if I won or not, just to be entered is fine with me. I really didnt want the 3rd gen. xmod, because soon, I'll be getting outta xmods.

I understand where everybodies coming from, but remember how it used to be, custom parts everywhere, not just painted bodies. I voted on the car the I liked the most, and the car that was furthest from stock.

i cant wait for SKV012a to enter next month's comp. i'm pretty impressed with the outcome considering the lack of parts available at RS and the fact that we thought they were discontinued til the new evo's came out. one thing to keep in mind is that people can't see your project up close, pictures are probably 50% of your success when you enter and SPR, besides having a nice project...had exceptional pictures. its not about who has the most modded car, it's about who has the most appealing car to a community of young R/C car enthusiasts.

Plus the two hours driving to a RadioShack to get the Corvette prize. Plus the time I'll be spending in Post Office lines to send the prizes to the winner. Plus the time it takes to think up the general rules, write them down, order and correct them, ask the rest of the Staff if they're ok, make any changes they brought up, reorder it, post it. Answer all and any questions the forum public has to ask. Plus, typically redo the whole thread over again because of a **** forum glitch, lmfao. And then take into account that I do that process at least twice (submission thread and voting thread) and plus whatever other random competition bullspit that shows up over the course of the month. Then, do it all over again to typically no avail; leading to bullspit rants and pointless discussion ruining the whole fun part of competitions. ;)

This is my input on these competitions:

They are excellently put together, and I appreciate Donzii for putting it together.

One thing I am dissapointed about is people not appreciating performance as much. I have put just as much time in to my car as other people, just in a different way. I soldered in new 3010 fets and tuned with tires for hours, taking as much time as a paint job.

All I'm saying is, performance is a lot less appreciated than good looks. I think I should clone my car 100 times and let 100 people try them :D

i for one think donzii should get a prize for doing all of this. and for the peopel who did enter nice work. you all did great work and you should all feel good about your self. if bondo was to still be really active ik he would make a speach that everyone would read at least twice. that speach would make people think alot differentally. KEEP in mind most of the members are younger kids. they do what they can and they try soo hard. i voted for SPR cause i saw his build thread and i saw the work he did. o saw the problems he had to go through. I think everybody did a good job, but just a good body doesnt mean that you should win, you have to follow the good body with a good chassis, like XXX did. I wouldnt say that I didnt do chassis mods, because I did alot, infact, I spent most of my time working of it, getting it ready to go offroad.

I've dont alot to the chassis, everything will take effect when it comes down to the time when it gets in dirt or mud.

donzii, you always do a great job at this kinda stuff! And you should get something special for all your hard work.

bondo's work will hopefully live on, and everybody will try to customize more for major competitions. I bet if I entered my Mustang Boss, I might win, but I'm going to take my time, and make sure everything is perfect.
