I got this baby in the mail today. a little wd40 body wax, and some meguiars tire cleaner and shine. and this baby looks sweet. i also went looking through some of my stuff to find my old electric rustler. i found some of my tires that i had. well heres some pics.
i bought a fail safe for this yesterday. and well ummm, i cant find it:confused2: maybe my dog hid it. who knows.

yeah thats my boxer phantom, hes like 5 or 6 months old. mischeviously little dog.

well i found my failsafe, got in installed. which was a difficult task seeings as how they dont leavave much room to spare in the receive box. found out the throttle servo has some missing teeth. it was sitting there popping, so i found one of my old jr servos, and put my steering one in it. 570, with brass gears. should take care of that. lol. im going to try to get some test runs in tommorow and get it all tuned in.

nice man. congrats on your new nitro. first one? don't know. you seem to know what you are talking about. which failsafe did you get? Venom by any chance?

anyway, gearguy had/has(:-?) one of those. i remember he made a video and it was pretty sweet.

any performance plans? good luck finishing it up.

yeah its the same one gearguy had. luk3 got it from him, then i got it from luk3. i have had 1 other nitro truck, a rustler about 5 years ago. but i have 3 or 4 boats i have ran. and its a duratrax fail safe.

i cant find any specs for how fast it goes, i guess we'll see today. edit according to rc-trading post these are capable of speed in excess of 55 mph. i guess we will se how close it is.
nice machine!

thanks

I'm not sure, my dad didn't ask the name of it...:(

55 is a nice speed too, hell mine only goes 40....but I don't think its tuned right....:roll_eye: :o

Nice glad to see someone worthy got that truck, instead of it ending up in some 12 year olds hands so he could bash it to bits and abandon it...

Good call on the fail safe, very smart choice as a first investment. Can imagine how many people i have seen spend money on upgrades first, before a fail safe only to go run it and see it crash into a tree.

yeah, i learned that the hard way on my first nitro truck years ago. bought a motor for it, the old one was toast. but i bought a hopped up OS .018, didn't know about the fail safes at that time. ended up demolished into a poll in walmart parking lot. but since i got into my nitro boats i learned about them. can save you a lot of headaches.

well i was working on getting it tuned in. and it wouldn't tune it to save its but. well come to find out the transmission is a 2 speed trans. and it was stuck in 2nd gear. makes since why it would be ok putting around but give it gas and it would fall on its face. on the tranny there is a little arm that comes out when centrifugal force over comes an adjustable spring and ball. well the ball was stuck up inside of it, and there was a ton of lock tite on each set screw. they stripped the heads out. ended up having to drill them out, now they have a little bigger set screw in them. lol it works though. well the ball wouldn't come out of there, i got it out, but the piece is messed up causing you not to be able to adjust the tension. it wasn't putting any tension on it at all, so as soon as the shaft started turning boom, it was in second gear. so i removed 2nd gear for the time being. i am going to order a new transmission for it. their not too bad, 20 bucks from redcat, but i think i can find one on fleabay a little cheaper. but i did get to run a couple tanks through it. i will try to get some vids tomorrow. this was a 3 hour process so i think I'm just going to enjoy a couple beers now.

How do you tune it right? I don't really understand the tuning part...i know its just not too rich, not too lean...

i removed the second gear for the time being. i ordered the new trans a little bit ago. should be here wednesdayish.
yeah tuning it you have to get the high side and low side set correctly to get the correct head temp and operation. as far taking off smoothly, nice high speed, all that good stuff.

BulletsRain

update time, i ran in a couiple of problems, but got it fixed for the most part. lol, added a new exhaust coupler, gotta order front dogbone, it twisted:confused2:, and front drive cup. it fell off somewhere. got some new nitro, found a drive hub hex toasted, traxas ones fit it just fine though. i took the rims off of my electric rustler to put on here, but the offset wont work. i did pick up a set of tires similar to the dirt paws so i have a set. unfortuanately i didnt find out about the offset til i removed the old tires and put these on, thankfully i didn't glue them on there.
and i messed around with the suspension a little and got it to sit a little higher off the ground, it was scraping in to many places. heres some pics

yeah it turned out very nice. almost dont wanna mess it up now. lol. but i think this weekend i'll run it around and see how she acts. i still dont have any foams for these tires. and the hobby shop doesnt have any right now. been out for a week or 2. hopefully they have some in friday when i stop. if not i guess ill just have to make some.

im checking into paddle tires for when it snows. but the ones they had last week are gone now, and they were 20 a set. i have been doing some searching on ebay and the net and found 4 paddles tires for a little over 30 http://cgi.ebay.com/Pro-Line-Sand-Paw-2-2-Paddle-Truck-Tires_W0QQitemZ350107957333QQcmdZViewItem?hash=ite m350107957333&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A570%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C2 40%3A1318 . and some beadlock rims for under 20 a set http://cgi.ebay.com/Axial-Rockster-Black-2-2-Beadlock-Truck-Wheels-Pair_W0QQitemZ270288830303QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item 270288830303&_trkparms=72%3A570%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C2 40%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14. so for about 70 bucks it will be ready for the snow.

the last one i had did fine. you just have to adjust the carb to run in the colder temp, and watch out for slush, dont want to get water in the air filter if you can help it. wouldn't hurt to make some sort of airbox to keep the snow and slush from getting in the air filter.

i finally got this tuned it to where its consistantly running the same. and within a 1/16 of a turn for peak performance from hotter days to coler days. all it took was a bigger bore carb to feed this beast.

I like to use an air wand and degreaser, if you spray the degreaser into the airstream is has a pressure washing effect that I have always found to work very well.

never thought about that, will have to give it a try, i've used carb cleaner before to "powerwash it", but if you get the wrong kind and its not quick evaporating it makes the plastic brittle. i gotta hit up the parts store anyway tomorrow so ill pick up some degreaser as well. thanks for the tip,

I use nitro clean and a brush to clean the gunk, then spray a little wd40 on the plastic parts then blow the extra wd40 off with airhose makes it look like new

Soak the car with degreaser, then when you turn on the air just keep spraying degreaser into the airstream, its incredible how well it works and none of the electronics ever really get wet so there is no damage, I have used this method for years and have been very happy with the results.

got the tmaxx with the 3.3 conversion, and the 2.5 nitro rustler. there not the cleanest, seem to be sound. got a little bit of painting to do then i am going to start cleaning these up.
and some parts will be here tomorrow for the tsunami

here's some pics.
man this thing has a lot of articulation.

the only thing i found wrong with the rustler (except being dirty and dirty airfilter) is the exhaust coupler was ripped, luckily i bought a couple last year as they were close to the tsunami ones.

well, the tmaxx was another story, went to put some after run oil in it to lube it all up, since im sure the last guy didn't, and well nothing happened. the electric start didnt roll over or anything. pulled it all apart, the engine was gummed up and sluggish rolling over, and the lube for the electric start had long since dried up. so i need to get some grease for it.
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll28/zippo855/100_1995.jpg

and a new exhaust header, this one is hammered

got the air filters washed on all three, not sure if i am going to reoil them, or just replace as the one i found to use in the tsunami is a traxxas filter, and identical to the other 2. 6 bucks for 3

well i took all the nitros out today, but only got to drive 3 of them.

tmaxx - needs a big wide open area thats smooth to get it tuned it correctly. and i now need to replace my servo save as it decided to break when i was coming down from a wheelie. still works but i know its broke...

tsunami - got it tuned it great, and got the 2 speed adjusted to where its doing great. it was a blast

rs4 - finally got a chance to play with this. started on the 2nd or 3rd pull. was runing great, then started bellowing smoke and died, acted like it was flooding itself out. went over to adjust it and found that the retaining clip for the high speed needle is broke. so i dint get to drive it long. but while it did, this thing is so smooth and very nice response and steering. i need to get a new clip and hit the tennis court for some high speed runs.

no video though, didnt have a camera man today.

first one is an rs4 roller with 2 speed trans and aluminum shocks. second one is a 1/8 scale buggy. thing is a beast, has a .28 hpi engine, few alloy upgraded parts, and the little one was staring at it in awe for a little bit, almost as long as me

Strip the RS4, the 1/8th should only need some rubbing alcohol sprayed on it and an air gun taken to it. Watch out on that 1/8th, it's an animal, you might want to change the gearing around on it, I only ran it once and if I remember right it was geared for the stock engine and hit top speed wayyyy too fast, could have handled taller gearing with ease.

zippo855
10-22-2009, 10:00 PM
alright, thanks for the heads up on it. i'll look into some other gearing options, and looking more at the 1/8 i'll probly just take it to the shop tommorow and hit it with some cleaner and air then. rs4, thats another story, lol. definately a strip down. if the weather warms up a little i might get to take it out this weekend

and heres a group shot, minus the tsunami.

The wheel base is as close to comparing them as you will ever get. When the tmaxx is trying to get up on pipe, the ofna will be shredding everything in its path. I cant wait for you to run it. A full turn, full power, slide, with all 4 wheels churning is something to be experienced. Start it, start it now...

alright well with the last run i broke the servo again, so i picked up a metal gear servo from the hobby shop, and it has a little more torque too, so its all good now. took them out today, the tmaxx and the buggy. got some videos mostly of the tmaxx, battery died in camera and i didn't want to stop playing to change em. lol.
also finally, and i repeat,, finally got the tmaxx running good. i bought a carb oring kit, and went to take the carb apart to find that the allen head plug/screw one the end of the carb was stripped, so i robbed the carb from another engine just to see if it would make it better. and I'll say, she was a beast today.
one major thing i noticed and Bart said it, the 1/8 buggy has an amazing amount of power. and both of them see to be smoking a little excessive, but thats the only place they would run at, i tried leaning out the setting and it wouldn't stay running, so i can deal with some extra smoke to keep em running. and i may look at the bottle, it may have a little higher oil content than some. who knows.
i did manage to break the buggy though, this awesome engine has a header set up like my banshee had. a spring holds it to the head, well i was going along and bam, got real loud. upon farther inspection the spring had ripped through the aluminum manifold. i just drilled a few new holes in the manifold for it to hook on to.
the videos like i said are mainly of the tmaxx, i got some good air in these vids, but come to find out my best air wasn't caught on tape. managed to catch the bigger jump just right and launched that baby. it was sweet. well enough talk heres some vids

definately wouldnt hurt to gear it up. this thing is a beast with plenty of power. i was hoping to get the full jump over the big hill, land by the concrete and launch over that to the bottom. but that vid it mananged to come down on the only spot that the ground is lower than the concrete, and stopped as you can see. need a new front bumper now, lol.

get some vids of the f1 running again, and if you get bored with it just drop it in the mail ;)

All you do on those is buy a larger clutch bell, no need to change the spur gear. I was thinking of selling the F1 until I got it down tonight... I think it will be buried with me.

i still need to get one. its on my to do list before it warms up and i can run them again. lol and yeah the f1 should be something you hang on too. i find myself gathering things to sell and then when i take the down to get pics, i end up just putting them back up.

well when i first saw this truck i wanted one, and the opportunity arose to where i could get one. so here she is, and few comparison shots to my other big ones.

well i needed some rx's for a couple of the nitros. the sc8 and one nitro rs4. i'm in the process of revamping and upgrading the rc4s. so heres a few things i have so far.

comparison shot to xmods wheels. makes for lots of room in the rx box. unlinke the normal cramped area. will make installing fail safes a lot easier.

those rx's came out of an sc10

some more parts arrived and i was able to get the engine mounted with new pinion gears, might have to invest in some new spur gears now. now all it needs is an on off switch, a fail safe, and a battery holder. then i can do some testing. o yeah and a screw and some zip ties to hold the muffler in place.

i have one thing to say to you sir. man up and buy a savage flux with lipos. standing backflips son. or buy a stretched chassis savage x with a rb.26. garunteed you will get atleast 10 gallons threw ANY rb and it will still haul like new. your collection needs less traxxas and more hpi :P

not a big fan of electric larger scale rcs. with nitro i can run until i run outta nitro, which takes a while to run that gallon through it. vs having to spend a lot o money on lipos and only get to run it 20-30 minutes. and i actually have more hpi than traxxas. i traded my rustler to a guy for his nitro rs4. so i have 1 traxxas (tmaxx) 3 hpi (nitro rs4's) 1 redcat racing (tsunami) and 1 team associated (sc8)
i have had my tmaxx longer than my friend has had his savage. I bought mine second hand, his was new. lets just say that i am not all that impressed with how many parts he has had to replace on his savage. i have only had a few parts that have broke and it was do too how hard i drove it. carb body (threads were stripped on side), and the front skid plate (ripped it through the screws) so my 20 dollars doesnt even compare to his diff replacement, dog bone replacements, rim replacement, dog bone replacement, body post replacement. and i have ran more fuel through my tmaxx than his savage.
dont get me wrong i'll still probly have a savage before long because im getting a heck of deal on one, but i wouldnt go buy a new one.
and most traxxas parts cost less to replace than the hpi parts.

edit, dunno why but i always for get the 1/8 ofna buggy.

idk man. i used to be sponsered by my local rc shop and all we ran was savages for nitro monster truck class. some of the hpi fans that are nitro guys will know the shop. its pree well famous. high octane hobbies? youtube it and youll see the hell we put those truck threw. shop is closed now :( new owners didnt do so well. that and the first and original owner had some money him self that id imagine helded to keep the store afloat. ol well. anyways youtube high octane hobbies and youll see. savages can go threw hell.

also when i was racing my 2003 hpi savage 25. i had a stock chassis, with traxxas zombies and rpm offset wheels. thing ran great. dialed my shocks in to the point where it wouldnt bounce and she did amazing. also for your friend thats blown his diffs. tell him to put thicker oil in it and hell find he can get a limited slip diff from it, im talking 50 000 weight oil, the stuff you have to use pliars to squeeze the bottle to get it out. also litium grease in with the ring and pinion does wonders

he used a really thick grease in his differentials. not sure the type, but when i saw it i was like well, definately provides good lubrication, and no leaking out of the case. im not saying they are a bad machine, just something i have been around that i wasnt all that impressed with. they have lots of power and all that. just seemed like it was always breaking.

well i took the rs4 and the tmaxx out this last week and had some issues to say the least
the rs4 ran like a striped *** ape until a tire came off the rim. and then when i went to restart it, it locked up and wouldnt roll over. ended up snapping the roto start bit in the process. and upon farther inspection i found this
primary roto start gear snapped in half
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll28/zippo855/100_3567.jpg

so i took out the tmaxx and it rolled over 3 seconds and locked up as well. and upon farther inspection i found this
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll28/zippo855/100_3561.jpg

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll28/zippo855/100_3564.jpg
one of the bushings on the 3 planetary gears on the ex start was smashed. the motor came loose a little bit, and the only thing i can think is the screw snagged it.

and i saw that my clutch bell was sitting at a weird angle and so i took it off and found this
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll28/zippo855/100_3573.jpg
whats left of the inner bearing

well i picked up new bearings today, and have the gear kit of the ez start ordered, and im going to put start on the rs4.

but amongst all this i did have something good happen.
this showed up for the sc8

glad to hear its a good tx setup. and as far as fixing it, the gears for the ez start are on order, im not puttin the roto start back on the rs4, it seems like it doesnt roll it over fast enough and just fills it with fuel. so im going to find a pull start in my spares and put it on, or maybe a tiger drive. dunno yet. but not a whole whole lot.

i actually went away from the roto start because the gear split in 2 pieces....
some alternatives to the pull start are ok, but not all.

took the rs4 out last night, and the tmaxx. forgot the camera but the rs4 drifted really nice, and the tmaxx is back in action, almost anyway lol. i got the new diff built and lubed, and i tell you what, these revo tires hook up better than my other tires on pavement, concrete, and the tennis court. i finally toasted my spur gear ive been limping along, lol. ot a spare one, somewhere....
but i did manage to score another one. a friend of mine was talking about his nitro truck and he said he had offered it to a guy for 50 bucks. i was like 50 bucks? whats wrong with it? he said it needs new diffs, and i want to get back into electric instead. i said well i wouldda gave you 50 bucks for it. so between when we left my house and we got to where we ran them, he picked his up and brought it there. and needless to say, i have another team associated nitro :) mgt 3.0 heres some pics

and the crappy part was it was right after landing the back flip.

so as you can tell me and a few friends went out and ran em today. the tmaxx took a hell of a beating, broke the front shock tower, and upon replacing that i decided to go ahead and relube the front diff, i found out i also stripped out my throttle servo, lol. time to get a new one of those, or at least gears. in one of the videos attempting the back flip i actually hit it just right and got it to do a couple back flips, didnt land on its feet, but o well. still looked good.
also took out the sc8 and the buggy. didnt get any vids of the buggy running but i did drag race my friends 1:16 brushless revo :), and it was neck and neck, pretty much came down to who had the better launch.

alright finally got the diffs in, found some on ebay decently priced, that were whole assemblies with housing and all. and got some at the lhs that were just the diffs for the same price. so now i have a spare set. got the new roll bar installed and then took a tally of what all needs replaced now.
total invested so far
50 bucks initial investment
diff housing assemblies x2 off ebay 42
diffs at lhs x2 40
roll bar piece 6 bucks
so total i have about 140 invested. so i cant complain as it would run if i took it out now.

but what i need to get are the front and rear bumpers and mounts, new gas tank, and one body mount. and i need to figure out something to hold the fuel line up off the spur gears as that's how its supposed to be ran.........

yeah i was talking with them at the lhs and their like, well i can take 25% off because its discontinued. and i was like alright ill take it. then when i got home i was looking at it more and was like, well i think im going to paint this baby up for looks, dont want it to looke like the tmaxx body does. lol

Nice Savage dude! Can't believe you got another nitro truck so quickly :)
thanks man, just coming across all sorts of deals.

and i cant believe no one picked up on the problem.

ok i fixed the problem, and let this be a lesson to anyone running nitros. whenever you put a new body on a nitro it needs some sort of cent hole to keep the engine cool. other wise, like in this case, it can basically create a heat box and overheat. what appears to have happened here was the engine overheated, pin came loose from the crank and fell out as it was running shoving the rod through the bottom of the block.
the head is slightly discolored in spots as well which indicates high heat.
the guy that originally bought this from my friend, said it was running great until he put this body on, and thats when it happened.
and word of advice, DO NO USE AN EXACTO KNIFE TO TRY CUTTING THE WINDSHIELD VENT HOLE OUT. hence the tape now on my finger............

alright i may have made it a little bit bigger than necessary, but the next step up engine is going in here, and i dont want any heat issues as kansas tends to get hot anyway.

and for an added measure i made a small rear window vent to force air out of the shell better as its basically set up for a big heat box.

not sure of the exact sizes of these hexes, but they are huge, i'll snag some pics later if anyone wants to see them. but bead lock rims with "hub caps"
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll28/zippo855/100_3793.jpg

and whats under the hub caps
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll28/zippo855/100_3794.jpg

the 4 stock tires, and a little shot of the tread on these massive mammoths, o yeah the body, the guy ran less than a quart of nitro through it the whole time he had it

some metal axles and camber gauge

and heres what the "wide axle, big hex conversion kit" does to the stance versus a stock tmaxx
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll28/zippo855/100_3799.jpg

and heres what the extended chassis looks like on the newer versus older tmaxx
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll28/zippo855/100_3800.jpg

i'm thinking this bad boy is going on the old tmaxx to try to save the body a little
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll28/zippo855/100_3801.jpg

and the stock parts, and a spare chassis that needs slightly straightened. (ran without chassis rails once)

hmmm

those look to be 4.0's basicly 4 inch wheels (they are generally used on 1/5th scale's such as a baja 5b/5t or a rc4wd killer crawler), as a regular 1/10th scale stadium truck is a 2.2(aka 2.2 inch wheels), but dont confuse that with the more recent (2006 to present day)traxxas rims, cause those are 2.8's(non-ROAR approved)

anyways, that looks SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICCCCCCCKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!

im sure its gonna be a blast driving those

thanks man, didnt get a chacne to run it this weekend. need to tighten up the wheels and apparently a 23 mm socket is not very common. between 3 tool trucks, 2 parts stores and sears no one carries one. so i have one on order.

yeah they are a little bigger than the 3.8s that come stock on the tmaxx. and thanks, it appears to be a beast. hopefully next weekend get to test run it.

well my camera person kinda bailed on me this weekend, and as usual ran outta time to get much run time in. did take the fleet out today, but only gotta play for about an hour then for another hour or so after the wife got home. heres some pics of the new motor and shell on the savage :)

here's the fleet

and the savage with the k4.6 and cs10 body
me and this paint had several issues. lets just say i wont be using it to paint lexan again.

Is that the 1/8 buggy in the back?? It looks so small now!

Otherwise looking good, which one is your favorite to drive?

yep thats the 1/8 buggy, and i still gotta say the funnest is the first tmaxx i got. can bash the heck outta it.

well, its been a while since i updated this thread, got rid of a few and gained some more. have 4 tmaxxes again, after selling one off. sold the sc8 and savage off.

heres the newest pics

this one is the newest one of them
http://i598.photobucket.com/albums/tt68/zipposcustoms/2011-02-28101708.jpg
classic chassis converted completely to 3.3 setup

this one has seen a bunch o changes.
dynamite big block chassis with a 454 losi motor, steel cvds / drive shafts, took the rpm off the one shelf queen and put it on here. then took the 2.5 trans off the beater tmaxx to complete this bad boy. and most recently installed the 2nd gear clutch ive had forever that needed replaced. and finally installed the new tires / rims
http://i598.photobucket.com/albums/tt68/zipposcustoms/2011-02-28101702.jpg

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll28/zippo855/2011-02-25204202.jpg

this one i got as a roller a long time ago, finally been working on it. and all i need now is the get a steering servo and she will be up and running. has a 3.3 sitting on a classic chassis with a FOC trans conversion.
http://i598.photobucket.com/albums/tt68/zipposcustoms/2011-02-28101651.jpg

the other maxx is currently under construction. taking the 2.5 w/ 3.3 conversion beater i had and putting it on the longer 3.3 chassis so no pics right now.

and finally got around to replacing the fuel tank in the buggy. since the seal shot craps on the old lid, and wasnt fixable.

got some more work done on the one i got as a roller. got the steering binding issues fixed, tank mounted, elects all sorted and mounted. now i just need to run fuel lines and she will be ready to fire. then in the long run get a different pipe for it.

got the other one i didnt have pictured before swapped over to the 3.3 chassis. still debating putting the 3.3 stock axles shafts and hubs on it or just leaving the 2.5 hubs and axles, i guess we will see how it does first.

Does the one above have the motor for a 2.5 or 3.3 setup in it? Will it just tear up 2.5 shaft and hubs?

its the 3.3 motor in it. it wont necessarily tear them up as its the later version of the 2.5 with the heavier duty a arms, hubs, and shafts, and the originally chassis these came off of had the 3.3 motor on it for a long time. main reason i was thinking of doing it was just to give it the whole 3.3 look.

well got everything buttoned up the elects sorted, now i just need an air filter assembly and crystal plug
http://i598.photobucket.com/albums/tt68/zipposcustoms/2011-03-07193706.jpg

all 4 of em just need a few parts to get the 2 on the left running. air filter assemblies on both, and front bumper mounts on the 2nd from left.
http://i598.photobucket.com/albums/tt68/zipposcustoms/2011-03-07194715.jpg

tentative bodies for them. the powerwagon needs painted, and the hard body chevy on the left will only be there for a bit, need to find something else to put on it.
http://i598.photobucket.com/albums/tt68/zipposcustoms/2011-03-07194758.jpg

and eventually these 2 will have a different body as well, but for the time being the stock bodies will work

Have you run it with and without that long yellow stinger? I've always found that they kill top end performance quite noticeably.

I've ran stingers for a while on the tmaxxes and haven't really seen an issue. I will be trimming it down some as it doesn't need to be that long.
