At an xmods scale, they are the same thing. At the scale of a real car, all wheel drive is typically used in cars. Often now with newer cars it is electronically controlled to help with driving on say ice. Four wheel drive you will find on more trucks and SUVs. It is just full out power to all wheels at all times as the differential allows.

In a nutshell, 4WD distributes 50% of the power to the front and 50% to the back all the time.

An AWD system (such as subaru's) distributes 90% of the power to the front, and 10% to the back under normal conditions, making it drive much like a front wheel drive automobile. It is only when the front wheels lose traction that the computer automatically distributes power to each individual wheel as needed.

4wd you have to engage and is front and back wheels have to be at the same speed and is always on when engaged.

AWD is allways enaged and you have no control over it. Theres also a center diff with a clutch like thing so the front and rear wears are allowed to spin at diffrent speeds.

Take forza 2 for example,When ur turning in a tight corner in a FWD car (example Scion tC)u have no worries, same with AWD for example (Subaru Legacy)when ur turning that corner u have no worries.

AWD means all wheels are powered at the same time. the front wheels are pulling, and the rear are pushing

4WD mean you can turn off the front wheels so they just free-spin, not pull the car. just the rear is pushing
