I didn't have a name for this project, just another painting thing.

I recently bought a new Barricade body and decided to apint the old one. Like Xmodkidd.

And, the color I'm gonna paint it is orange by Tamiya. I was originally going to do a dark metallic orange, but Hobbytown USA didn't have that in stock.

mmm... orange...

I was looking for some Tamiya putty, but Hobbytown ran out of that... So I got this:

30 minute drying time. And, it's not to shabby.

It's in for primering now. Just need to touch up a few things and it'll be ready for some paint.

I hope the scotch tape on your windows is enough to keep the paint from seeping in.

Good luck and nice color choice! :D

Thanks guys!

I've gotten the primer down

Still a few rough spots, but they'll hopefully be gone with a bit of sanding.

http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/5645/img2597vy8.jpg

The front bumper was surely a pain in the *** trying to fill in those two holes for the ram bar. It's not perfect, but it'll do.

heh.. i shoulda done that also o.O and i shoulda done it earlier.. lol.. fill in the holes on spoiler.. that would probably look better without the spoiler in my opinion for saleen >.<

Looking pretty good,if I were you,I would heat up a Xacto/Razorblade and cut open the hood vents and put black mesh, but it would look kinda the same, but a little better IMO.

Lookin' nice. About the Tamiya, it's illegal to import into the US now. :D

Didn't you say the samething on my project, yet i can still go and buy tamiya putty just like you'd go out and buy a #2 pencil? hmm i've yet to hear about the legallities of the putty...

Anyways man, nice thing going there, lol sadly enough i have a Saleen project going on myself, though it'll be a while before it surfaces... lol guess that'll make mine #7599? lol... Looks good, Can't wait to see the orange, the sanding on the putty was flawless too, i see the what you mean about cleaning up, but it looks really smooth. How'd the roof turn out? I'm gonna have to re-putty the roof lightly on mine cause i sanded too far down and you can see the circles where the holes are.

taiwanesekid05

Here comes the orange...

Put down 3 mist coats.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/1162/img2599wk0.jpg

Looks nice from a distance, but up close, ther are a bunch of bumps.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/9124/img2602nx6.jpg
http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/1460/img2601aj3.jpg

Which leads me to my first question:

Will I have to sand all this down so it's smooth, or will 2 wet coats make it smooth?

@Kaze

I've still got the holes... I'm not to anal about the details though... I might redo them though.

the bumps may be caused by the humidity. go to a room where the tempeture seems normal, or outside

i'll try to find a link on how to paint good.

Sanding between coats. :bigwink:

The head guy/owner at my LHS says Tamiya's illegal now, he's not sure why though. If you look around, it's out of stock on Tamiya's shop and Tower Hobbies, two places where it should be.

Nice color. I like it so far. When working with that squadron putty(i use it all the time) make sure when you start getting close to the finishing prouduct or paint, always wash the car and let it air dry, don't use a hairdryer, it makes it softer and mushy. Hope this helps

Kaze: actually mine is the 7599 saleen project yours is the 7600 project. lol

Sanding between coats. :bigwink:

So would wet sanding with 600 grit sand paper smooth things out?

xmodkidd33
06-10-2008, 01:14 PM
Yes, it should work. Follow up the 600 with something like 1000 to make it as smooth as possible.

taiwanesekid05
06-10-2008, 03:27 PM
If I had any... The highest grit sandpaper Hobbytown had was 600... But I've got a bit sanded down smooth.

Try Wal*Mart in their Automotive section, they usually have it by the touch-up paint, Bondo, etc.

taiwanesekid05
06-10-2008, 04:01 PM
Do you know anywhere else besides Walmart where I can find this kind of sandpaper? Walmart is a bit far where I am.

xmodkidd33
06-10-2008, 04:07 PM
Any other auto-parts stores, I would guess. AutoZone, Advanced Auto Parts, etc. You could also try to find some online, if you become that desperate. :D

Donziikid
06-10-2008, 04:10 PM
Hardware stores will also stock some fine sandpaper. I've seen packages at my local Ace Hardware where they sold sandpaper from 100 - 2000 grit. ;)

I just ran out of paint :(

I'll have to wait untill next month before I can buy new spray paint (I'm not going back to Fremont until then)...

For now, I'm going to look for some sand paper.

suicide_star

autozone has it up to 2K grit, i bought 1K, 1.5K, and 2K last week from there

If you mixed paint types, meaning primer and then the Tamiya orange, you'd get that problem.

Just a FYI, when you get new paint, get Tamiya primer. It may be a little more expensive than you are used to, but 5 bucks is far better than screwing up your body.

Also, it looks like you are painting in an area with dust or debris in the air. Try to paint in an area without loose material in the air, or even on the ground. Spray paint can blow up debris from the ground.

taiwanesekid05
06-10-2008, 11:26 PM
I don't think I mixed the paints, but I didn't let it dry all the way...

I'll go look for some. The Tamiya primer I found was $8.50 so I strayed away from it. I just need to find a smaller can.

There past few days have been a bit windy. And hot. Up to 88 degrees. So, ther has been a bit of dirt flying around in my backyard. I would paint indoors, but the Tamiya paint gets a bit dusty and when I painted in my garage, I got some orange dust on my mom's Camry... And the floor... And just about everything.

Kaze
06-11-2008, 02:19 PM
LOL, I've never had a bad experience with the Tamiya Paint. As a matter of fact, trying out that gunmetal is what made me a fan of their spray paints cause they go on and dry so easily for me. Anyways, If you need some sand paper I can mail you a small sheet of 1000 grit. As for the paint, I'd offer you some but I think it's illegal to mail paint to someone O.o... lol just order it online or something. Good luck and lemme know if you want that sheet.

taiwanesekid05
06-11-2008, 03:15 PM
There's an Ace Hardware sorta nearby (10 min drive localway) I'm gonna pick up some sandpaper there...

Thanks anyways Kaze.

Time to dig up an old thread (bwahaha...)

Since the weather is nice again, decided to spray paint the Saleen again... And the paint started cracking because of a different orange paint, bubbles started forming, and I personally didn't like the paint color anymore. So, one year later, here's what the Saleen looks like now:

Sanded down again X(

http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/5719/img7632.jpg

Now, I'm going to sand the whole thing down, and change the color to either a metallic color, or simply white.

sounds good, hope you can get that paint off, next time just do dust coats at the distance it says on the can and keep with flash times. by any chance are that fr bumper a new one, if it is do you still have the old one? ;)

taiwanesekid05
07-05-2009, 07:45 PM
It's the old one. The paint on it bubbled really badly and got too thick, so I got rid of the paint on the bumper before the rest of the body.

taiwanesekid05
07-17-2009, 05:24 PM
Got some new paint ;)

Left side is primered with white primer, left is non primered. Obviously I'm going with the left side XD

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae35/chinesekid05/IMG_7741.jpg

It's a lil' ugly on the right side, so the weapons should be distracting enough for you to ignore it.

SUPER TALL SPOILER!!! No, actually my way of holding up the spoiler and mirrors so I can paint them.

I painted the body, but there were a bunch of little problems...

The main body looks fine, along with the spoiler.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae35/chinesekid05/IMG_7775.jpg

But the rest of the body got a bunch of bubbles, so I had to get rid of the paint and find some time to repaint them.

Yes... its back. I finally had time to spray paint.

Got one side and the hood repainted. Now they're shiny :)

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae35/chinesekid05/IMG_0910.jpg

The other side is a bit dull now...

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae35/chinesekid05/IMG_0911.jpg

Started painting some black onto some bits.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae35/chinesekid05/IMG_0913.jpg

Repainted the black onto the hood vents:

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae35/chinesekid05/IMG_0925.jpg

And the bad part. When I was repainting the windows, orange peel set in. Bad. So now I've gotta repaint the windows.

taiwanesekid05

What kind of paint are you using? How do you plan on removing the paint on windshield?

It's Krylon "Rust Tough" spray paint. I got rid of it using both sandpaper and paint thinner for the window wipers.

I resprayed the windows and some of it came out beautifully. Maybe another layer just to top it off.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae35/chinesekid05/IMG_0988.jpg

However, some of it did orange peel (only on one window) and the paint got a little thick on the window wipers. So the windshield and one window are going to be sanded/ paint thinnered down and repainted.

Nope, just rattle can and good masking. Make sure when you mask it off, you push down hard on the edges or the paint will run into the little cracks and stuff. As for the paint itself... its all luck.

how much does that paint and putty cost?

Paint:

Tamiya white primer:8 or 9... but worth it
Testors paint: 6 dollars (I think)
Black paint: 5 dollars

Putty: 8 dollars (don't get the tube type, its too weak IMO)

As for the rims, I'm keepng the stock ones. They still look good ;)

momo
06-01-2010, 08:41 PM
what do you mean the tube kind?

taiwanesekid05
06-01-2010, 09:08 PM
The tube kind of putty is this kind:

http://www.mfpilot.com/ebaypics/GreenPutty.jpg

It's cheap, but its really weak and not worth it in the long run.

The kind I use in Milliput two part putty. Its a whole lot stronger and I would say its like Tamiya putty, but I never tried it since I couldn't find it in my hobby store

Nice job on the paint but shame about the windows :(

Milliput is great stuff, i use it on alot of my model kits, it wetsands easily.
Best to use water with it to smooth it out abit better, it drys in 4 hours but i always leave it 24 hours to cure.
