In the HOT real world of Professional racing, there are MANY upgrades that are possible, and most are WAY TOO EXOTIC for the other players to purchase.
So in the 1/28th world, I keep nine cars in running condition and the rest is for parts.
Three are BONE stock, three have some RS upgrades to it and three have CF gear, Hot motors, etc.
The reason behind that is not so much to compete, but to get some knowledge out of every level of setup that I can invest in.
Only this past three days, I found something out in the CF chassis catagory that I would never have found out in the stock catagory. Now, I can apply the same benefits to the stock grade car and get a significant advantage, without breaking the bank or breaking the car out of the STOCK catagory...

Could you maybe make your titles a bit better? This is the 2nd one I've changed. Yes, RS-only parts are the only mods allowed in the XRL, and they have to be installed correctly (no mono-shocks). You could probably unwind the armature and drill holes in it, then re-wrap without anyone ever knowing.

The XRL series we're starting here in Fresno requires only "stock" cars, or cars that you can get parts for off the hook at RS. We're still hammering out the classes (Viper, I may ask your advice on this) and hope to get the series started by March. The reason for the limitation is because three of the local RS's are sponsoring the event with parts, etc for prizes. We have the races in front of the stores, and we had one demo race already in a mall in front of the RS there, we gathered quite a crowd and they sold 3 cars during the event.

Well, I'd say do 4 classes: stock, modded-stock, modded, and Über-modded.
Stock would be just that, stock. Not a single mod can be done, and it'd really be a driver's race. The only thing allowed would be chargable batteries.
Modded-stock would be the stock class, plus it'd allow all radioshack upgrades, all stock-style upgrades, such as bearings from TinyRC, and mods like a mono-shock/trishock or a swaybar, but no weight savings. Aluminum parts also would be allowed, since they don't improve performance at all. No li-ions or 5/6cell upgrades allowed.
The modded class allow all the parts in the modded-stock class plus it'd allow 5 or 6 cells, a maximum of 2 li-ions, and a hotter motor, so long as it runs on a single stack of fets (they can be upgraded fets, but they have to only be a 1X2 stack, so no stacked fets or external fet boards like a nelly). I don't know the weight of a li-ion car offhand, but whatever it is, 10 grams less than that is the weight limit.
The Über-modded class would be an all-out class, and the only limitation is that the chassis and suspension design has to be xmod-based (so if you have a brushless setup like mine and have all-aluminum parts, but the chassis and suspension design is still xmod, it qualifies, and no xmods with Mini-Z rearends), but must have at lest 1 xmod piece on it (a front clip counts). This class allows for weight savings to the extreme, whatever you can do. There are no radio limitations, so long as you don't run on the same frequencies as your opponents.

Do they like inspect your cars?

Yeah, but none too well. Not only did they not test for neo mags, but they also would install lap timers on them, and they wouldn't look where they put it, and a lot actually interfered with the driving. Glitching was supposedly bad, and they let pro drivers compete. In fact, the guy who won drives for Tamiya.

They only want you to buy RS parts, so they don't let you use parts from other places. Greed ruined it.

The rules have been posted in the events section [/url]http://www.xmodsource.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1719&highlight=, RS managers were very active in creating these rules, we'll see how they work out. The races will rotate between the stores involved in the sponsorship, there are now 12 cars scheduled to race the series, 5 of them are RS employees, more cars will come I'm sure. I'm always a bit leery of SPEC Series races, but we need exposure and to get a few races in the books and build organization.

You get disqualified, there was some talk of a two strikes and you're out rule, get caught twice and you're out of the series. One of the things I pushed for and didn't get was to allow guys that are good to be able to race in the next higher class, i.e. a modified car racing in the open class, they nixxed that idea and wouldn't explain why. I guess they didn't want some pro showing up and taking the open comp field with a stock car.

Also, get a gauss meter so you can test for neos. Other tests would be how fast it goes, and if it goes unusually fast, then there's something up.

Got one, I've taken readings from all of my Stage 1 and Stage 2 motors to get a good average, I'll give no more than 5% above the average reading. But I'm not sure who will be doing the official tech inspections, me or a RS employee, so far I'm just being the promoter until I'm invited to do more.
The whole thing is about promoting this series is for me personally to learn more about car set up. I want to do my own series, I have a traveling track and I'll have a permanent track in my garage. I doubt that I'll entertain guys with $200 and $300 cars, more like really hot RS cars with maybe better batteries or chassis mods, etc.

I was at the last one, but I think the guys from RS are going to want to be from now on. We had 21 guys sign up to race and only 8 made it to the mains. A lot of people were ****ed but that's racing. We had guys show up with one set of alkyline batteries expeting to race in 2 qualification rounds of 6 laps each and then the C and B maions of 6 laps, then A mains of 10 laps if they got that far, and that's not including practice. One guy thought we supplied the cars, then went in and tried to jack RS for a car so he could race. Another parent of a 10 year old got ****ed and tried to tear the track apart when his kid got eliminated. Once we got to the mains everything was fine. We drew a crowd of maybe 30 or 40 during the mains, and all fo all there wasn't that many problems.
The problem I have about the way this XRL is going to be handled is there's no room for imagination, all of the modifications have to be off the hook from RS, and that's wrong. But when you have them sponsor the series that's what you get. Once we get good interest I'll invite the guys to race at my house, or take my tracks to somewhere else, and write some rules to allow aftermarket modifications if so desired. Today we were racing at a local skatepark, using the banks for hauling serious butt on a cone course. Then some guys got into seeing how far they could jump and started trashing their cars. I just watched and laughed but some of those guys were getting great air, like 5' and 6' up. I was tempted but my car isn't all that fast.

Being asked if you were an XRL inspector is an insult. They were clueless from what I've heard and did not check for neo mags or windings, etc.

I didn't take it like that, but all I did was a quick body off check of the motors and batteries. Very few guys in this area have any imagination for modifications, me included. The difference is I'm trying to learn from this forum, and slowly I'm picking things up. All of the motors were RS Stage 1's except for the two Radio Shock employees, who had S2's. They missed their gearing, that's how I was able to keep up with them, grabbing a second place was good for me, I just out drove them.
The next thing I'm planning on is either aluminum or CF chassis pieces and maybe some billet driveline parts. I have one car that will become my test bed, maybe in a few months I'll try some battery upgrades but I have a lot to learn first. As it is I need to spend more time racing and less time promoting.

The upgrade to an aluminum driveline isn't needed unless you're running a very hot motor and/or lithiums.

Because they did a half-assed job at checking for illegal mods.
