well....here's the reason I haven't been on here in a week or more. I stole my dad's '94 LGT wagon (he can drive the caravan :-p ), and did this to my wagon:
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c108/Numbchux/PICT3212.jpg

got some parts ready for install  :
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c108/Numbchux/PICT3208.jpg

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c108/Numbchux/PICT3086.jpg

hmmm
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c108/Numbchux/PICT3204.jpg

8" wide rim.....yikes:
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c108/Numbchux/PICT3206.jpg

out with the old:
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c108/Numbchux/PICT3211.jpg

got the new knuckles stripped down, new bearings are on the way:
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c108/Numbchux/PICT3210.jpg

trying to get the rear diff pinion nut off:
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c108/Numbchux/PICT3209.jpg
took out the driveshaft, locked the center diff, put a breaker bar on the nut, and proceeded to drive. it just locked the tires. I guess I'll have to try an impact :-\

yesterday, I spent about 3 hours (got locked in.....who'd a thunk they close @ 5?) and most of my paycheck at the junkyard yesterday:
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c108/Numbchux/PICT3207.jpg

today, with some seafoam deep creep, and this rig, I got the splindle nuts loose:
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c108/Numbchux/PICT3215.jpg

all of this for those 2 stinkin brackets:
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c108/Numbchux/PICT3216.jpg

I'll be taking them down to my buddy's place next weekend to sandblast them. hopefully get my superpro bushings ordered very soon.....I can't wait!!!

blur out your plate

what are you going to do? only reason to ever be concerned about your plates is if you're doing something illegal or if you have an evo, something that would void your warranty. anything else is paranoia.

and yes, extremely fun. full polyurethane bushings, fully adjustable suspension, 20mm sway bars front and rear, 17x8 wheels wrapped with some sticky 205mm wide rubber, big azz brakes, etc. etc. etc.

it's FT4WD. meaning locking center diff. with the driveshaft on the ground next to the car, the center diff must be locked to allow movement at all.

and no, I will not lay off the decals. more are on the way

actually black hides surface imperfections better than most. certainly much better than Rally Blue Pearl or Sedona Red Pearl (the others I'm considering).

Would you do the respray yourself, or have it "proffesionally" done?

A little more quality behind proffesionally done, but a lot more satisfaction with doing it yourself. Wouldn't you say? And you certainly have narrowed it down to the three toughest colors to choose from, those would all look great on that car!

Make sure you use the really nappy rollers as they leave a better texture in the paint :bigwink:

The guy that lived across the street from my parents repainted his '62 GMC pickup in his drive way using rattlecans and actually had it turn out really good.

I'll be using a self-leveling paint, so as long as it's thinned properly, it doesn't matter what roller is used.

rattle cans are inferior.

Glad to see you got the humor in my comment. :p

Well not everybody can afford to drop $600-$1000 for a good gun and compressor to paint a car with. Oh and tell all the taggers out there that Rattle cans are inferior. they do a good job for what they were designed and intended to do.

because a roller is cheaper, and doesn't require a myriad of equipment. and when the paint is thinned properly, will look just as good. this car painted with a roller using the same technique:

that wing on the wiper blade is to make the wiper blade more arrow dinamic but unless your racing it makes little difference

"arrow dinamic"

but no. it's not for less drag or anything like that. it's to keep the wiper blade on the windshield. at freeway speeds, I've watched the wiper blade go airborne.....not fun.

how much spent? ha! that all depends. my grandma bought the car 10+ years ago, and gave it to our family, and I inherited it.....

most of the parts that were used to do the 5-speed and 4WD swap were from my '85 GL. which only cost $700, and served as an awesome daily driver for more than a year, AND donated countless other parts to my other projects since then. so I wouldn't really count that cost either.

the engine came from my mom's old Daily Driver. which would have just been junked anyway (lots of rust, front end damage, FWD, auto, etc.). so again, no cost there. also got most of my front suspension parts from that car.

upgraded front brakes. free. takeoffs from a buddies '02 2.5RS when he went to monstrous aftermarket ones.

trans/rear diff: $500 after shipping....yikes
engine-> trans adapter plate: $150
Optima Red-top battery: $175
5-lug parts other than the legacy front stuff: birthday present  but less than $50 from the local junkyard
sway bars: $15 from same junkyard.....and same car
springs: traded for a stock intake plenum/MAF (which cost me $4 at the junkyard)
Rota Torque wheels: $550 (which is about $200 less than retail!)

plus a few hundred bucks probably worth of random crap I'm not remembering. less than $1500 on just this car. although......probably about 1,000 hours of my own time.

update...got one rear wheel bearing removed, cleaned, and repacked. got the new seals in, spindle in, and hub/rotor on. so I thought I'd mount a wheel and take a few pics:

You are just joking about this roller crap right? I have seen alot of shadetree garage stuff, but never heard of using a roller and getting a nice finish. I suppose anythings possible if you wet sand it then buff the crap out of it.

not joking for a second. have a read through this very thread. in it you will see a picture of an orange 1969 Charger that was done using the very same method. under that picture, you will notice a link. in which the person who owns that very Charger explains how exactly to do it. btw, it's not the same kind of paint roller you'd use on your house. you use a special, high-density foam roller.

So I was right?! Ha, Ive never had that happen, guess it varies by cars, or how fast you drive.

yea, it must be part of the aerodynamics of subarus.....they all seem to have the flying wiper problem. so pretty much every one from 1998+ have the little wing on the drivers side wiper arm (my mom's base model '01 legacy has it...)

and yes, I've gotten extremely lucky with parts acquisition.....I'm an extremely careful driver, because I know replacement cost (just for the parts) would be more like $5k. and you can forget paying a shop to do all this labor!

another update:
fresh paint on the rear calipers (fronts are already painted from the previous owner)
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c108/Numbchux/PICT3253.jpg

the brakes are all stock take-offs from an '02 2.5RS. I will not be using drilled/slotted rotors, as the drastic changes in rotor thickness just make weak spots and causes the rotor to crack (except the insanely expensive ones......in which case, they're insanely expensive.....).

I will have these cryo'd to prevent warping.

called fender braces. they bolt onto the frame rails under the fenders to prevent chassis flex. they're aluminum, so uber light (only a few ounces each :eyecraz: ), and plenty strong!

oh yea, and I got the holes tapped in the front struts, and one of the rears (have to buy another one.....the price we pay for experimentation), and got that rear one full of some Gear oil (about 1000000x thicker than that watery stuff that came out of them).

wow, you're an idiot.

sure, I'd love to have a car that out performs this one (in every way possible, handling, reliability, mileage, cargo space, control in wet/icy conditions, etc.). but, there is virtually zero other car that could even get close to it. and the few that could, would require thousands upon thousands of dollars of modification to get there. on top of the cost of the car. I don't have that kind of money.

but, since you decided to tell me to get rid of it and start over with something else, you must be willing to pay for it for me. and for that, I thank you! feel free to pm me and I'll send you my home address to which you can send a certified cashier's check for $15k.

did some more work tonight:
continued working on the fluid replacement in the struts....
the hole is very shallow, so in order to cut threads, I had to cut the tip off of the tap:

but managed to get some nice threads cut anyway:

they don't quite seal, so I'm probably going to have to use some teflon tape or something.....but got fluid in 2 of them, and started on a 3rd....

Why don't you buy a set of gas charged stuts? The traction will be alot better. Or do the oil filled due better off road? Also teflon tape should seal that tread up well.

lol. Why are you keeping that wagon for soo long? Sell it =]. Do you do some extreme offroading with it :D. Your doing lots of work for that car man. I dont think i would really give a **** in your case but whatever floats your boat man.

And what do you drive? Or ever build a car your self? Didn't think so.

The brick is looking good so far

this look like an off-road rig? gas charged doesn't mean squat.

but by replacing the watery fluid that was in them with something much thicker will drastically increase the dampening characteristics of them. which should work very well with my 400lb/in springs

I'm talking suspension so stiff, that sway bars do nothing. the suspension never travels enough to use them.

^bingo. I already know that I'm probably one of less than 10 guys in the country (and probably another 10 in Australia/New Zealand) with this engine/tranny combo and a 5-lug swap in an EA82 subaru. and I know I'm the only one running miata rear struts. and I know I'm one of 2 (the other guys doesn't have an engine swap, or 5-lug swap) replacing the fluid in the struts. and the only one running Rota wheels!

anyway....I ordered tires on Saturday. Discount tire direct was doing an online promotion. $100 instant rebate and free shipping for any order of 4 tires or more. so I bought some Hankook winter iPike snow tires, and some Kumho Ecsta ultra high performance summer tires. for less than $500 SHIPPED!

You're going to enjoy those Kumho's.. it's odd.. they're really cheap in price, but they're amazingly good! Not as good as my Yokohama's ;) but they are unbeatable with their price.

Is that the actual ride height above? I love how the tires fill the wheel wells.

Everybody wants a unique ride, one that few if any others have. Looks like you got it. And not a bad one at that. :)

this post makes me want to cry.

V6 would be homicide.

and I hate turbo's with a fiery passion.

it has a bigger, and more efficient 4-cyl.

it will probably get a little belt-driven boost (think about it) next summer. but first I need a beater Daily Driver (thinking 2-door nissan altima)

long term plans are Link G3 stand alone and EZ30DR (3.0l H6 from '96-'07 tribeca's and Outbacks) or the EZ36 (3.6l from the '08 tribeca.....but nobody has done that yet......so I have no idea what will be required)

Well... why do you need someone to clear a path for you? Being the first is much more rewarding.

it is. and I've done it numerous times with the suspension. but that was all junkyard parts etc.

the EZ36 is not yet available in the US.....

and, I know I'd need the motor, and a nice standalone ECU system. just for those 2 pieces....$7-8k. being the first to get that done......easily drop $10k.....yea.....not gonna happen any time soon.
