So I'm announcing my next project that I've started working on. It's a Veilside Nissan 350Z Roadster. Below you'll see pics of the car I'm trying match the appearance of, unfortunately I don't have pics of the little progress I've done but they'll be up perhaps about tomorrow. Enjoy the Concept for now, pics of the modded BK up tomorrow.

Thanks,
Kaze
~-)---------

This Project Is Currently Active.

EDIT:
It was brough to my attention that the pics posted before are not the Wide Bodykit version, so below are pics of the wide BK on a coupe model. I'm still going to attempt the Roadster version though.

http://www.rsportscars.com/foto/02/350zterminator04_02.jpg

At the moment the planned color scheme is close to cream with a black top, and I might be using the spoiler that comes with the stock 350Z body as opposed to the mild. The only progress is details to the BK as I have not gotten back the 350Z body, from my friend, that I plan to salvage into this project.

Looking back through this thread I see a lot of the pics are now broken links or have long since been removed so I'm going to revamp the thread with this post. I'm going to show the documentation from beginning to where it sits now, because in the coming month it's going to take a full turn to crazy. The type of crazy that everyone would've loved to see then as much as you will all love to see now. Enjoy.

I actually haven't picked out rims yet, seeing how my selection is kinda limited. I don't have the supra rims but i'm sure i have something that'll work out.

I just got done working a bit on the bodykit, its all I can do at the moment so right now all the cuts and stuff have been done to the side skirts and rear bumper, the front will take more work, and of course the body once i get my hands on it. I'll take pics when I wake up how its like 4am and my hands hurt from the filing, drilling, and cutting. I'll probably also use a bit of Epoxy later too.

I like the spoiler on this one more than the other.. I think your Z would really be a standout with that spoiler, because if you see a modified Z it's usually got the first spoiler.. :D

Good idea and good luck with the project! :bigwink:

The only Project I've done is My Integra Project, you can find it by searching a few pages into the appearance forum or searching for the DC5 Integra Project. Aside from that this is the first, "bigger scale" project I've done.

Thanks for the support, I agree so I think I'm goign to be using the stock spoiler from the Xmod Starter kit for it.

Lol I'm well aware, the a Dell Latitude c640, its about 5-6 years old now and has gone through 3 power cords lol :p

Thank you guys for you support, I applied a little bit epoxy today so the sanding process begins and it'll be a little while before the next update. As for the wheels I'm still not sure seeing how I dont own RSX wheels either, but i'll still look into it.

So after applying a little amount of putty, I came to a realization that its a little harder than i thought, but I can work with it. However I do have a question for you mroe experienced modders. What is a good method of approach into making the rear lower decks (under the exhaust) on the body kit?

I've had a couple of ideas about it, like using the plastic from the xmods packaging to create a center frame of the lower deck, and applying the putty to it. but what are some other ideas?

sweetvette
08-18-2007, 04:46 PM
what you said, and a lot of ppl like to use styrene strips, which you can buy at your local hobby shop.
I use the xmods plastic, but it would be easier to use epoxy and styrene strips on those decks below the exhaust.

Sweed
08-18-2007, 05:07 PM
Use styrene, and find the right kind of glue. With the right glue, the styrene will 'melt' and form a bond stronger than the plastic... Great stuff.. You just need some practice to start to shape it good.

RedSXmodder
08-18-2007, 09:03 PM
Tamiya make a bunch of good glues that "weld" the plastics together. A good example is a plastic cement...

Thanks guys, I'll go this afternoon and see if my LHS has any styrene (my area only has one hobby store, it sucks really). If not I'll try figuring out something easy. Also, there's some more work on the BK and chasis has been worked on too. I'm going to post pics later this afternoon, I'll also list the specs in the original post.

P.S. I'm still trying to meet up with my friend to get the 350Z body from him.

First things first, Sorry Mods for Double Posting, wasn't my intention to, just no one's written or replied to this post.

With that said, A Minor Update and a couple Questions. First, I've gotten bored waiting for my friend to get back to me when I can stop by and pick up the body, so I've been playing with the Meshing I've recently bought. So I cut the intake vents on the hood and put meshing on it and the rear bumper.

The Rear Bumper
----------------------------------
Ok, So now a couple Questions for my fello JDM Loving Xmodders. I want to give this car a clean JDM look with the minimal amount of chrome (the Tailpipes). Originally I thought of a Black Soft Top, with a Creame/"Light Beige" Color, a black hood, and black lower deck accenting (around the whole body). The Rims will continue to be the silver painted Scion Rims (might be changed for all-black or white wheels later).

However, now with this meshing I can add a third color to the mix, I thought of possibly painting the meshing blue, that way I'd have a Black and Beige/white car with blue meshing. I'm still debating the car's color in my head though. So right now I'm open to Ideas, how about it my fellow Xmodders?

Im not really fan of the the black hoods. i think you should keep the hood the same color as the body

Lol it is a veilside project, but Veilside is the company that makes the body kit, unless I'm wrong about that. I want to give it a nice color, I actually picked something out today. I was screwing around and found that Candy Apple Red with a Gold base looks nice. So this is going to be a Candy Apple Red Veilside Nissan 350Z. I dont know about leaving the hood black or not yet, but first things first, I should be getting the body sometime today so they'll be an update later on.

lol, well I hope it'll come out nice enough that anyone thats thought about this project and has never gotten to it will be proud of it. Incase anyone missed it the Final Body Color will be Candy Apple Red w/Gold base paint. The hood color has not been decided and the top color will be black.

BTW what color shoudl I make the Aluminum Mesh?

Time for another Update, this time #4:

I got the 350Z body from my friend finally yesterday. Man I got an old feeling of Nostalgia when I saw it. I'd forgotten the condition it was in. Though at the moment all I've done was mount the body kit (hasn't been epoxied yet), I hope you guys begin to get a feel for my vision of this project. So enjoy it, as it's the true begining of whats to be a beautiful project.

Oh and before I post the pics, I've decided I'm using the Stock Spoiler, the color of the car will be Candy Apple Red with a Gold Base. The hood's color will be decided on the day I paint the car (black hood is ready already).

And now the Pics:

http://photos-767.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v132/113/68/54901767/n54901767_30519879_8627.jpg

The 350Z body for this project. (front and back) This body was already cut up, a friend cut it claiming it'd cool down his motor, and I just stared at him calling him an idiot, the initial cut was very jagged (I cleaned it up) and eventually convinced him to give it to me. My other friend was holding it for me this summer.

Enjoy, more to come soon as I begin school again.

ok, so I know i've been busy with school and haven't really done much, but I figure its time for atleast a minor update.

UPDATE #5:
Since last I've written, I'd finally gotten the body, and I've started with the first in few minor physical details (cutting/sanding, etc) and the bodies basically getting ready for its new look, minus the next few molding stuff with the putty. In the pics below I took before I started adding the putty, but I'm molding the body kit to the body (giving it the "sealed" look to it), also left are the rear bumper lower decks and the top cover. once thats done, things should take shape into the final complete look. Also, I was inspired to try somethign with the hood and a paper clip off a picture of someones xmods project (I think it was it was in one of the Civic Guys projects over in the XI Forum). well 'till then I hope you guys enjoy these few pics:

well i was gonna say, there went a another mint 350z body down the drain, making mine just that much more valuable lol. then was going to add, atleast you have the talent to fix the poor thing and bring it back to a new life and have it looks awesome..

but then i saw page 3 with those jaged cuts.. im a little worried again, hope this turns out good and those cuts get cleaned up. this is deff a sweet idea for a project, cant wait to see it turn out, keep it up and good luck!

Kaze

the jagged cuts aren't so bad, I've been slowly working on this before of the off and on school schedule, the hrs needed to sand this properly is just too much to afford with my classes. There will be an update soon however, I just want to finish the putty work before then. The windows have been cut but they're going to get a clear plastic one (already made). Also I already made a test piece for the top cover, so all in all things aren't looking too bad right now.

@SPR, There are two different 350Z bodies shown in the project, the first one is still mint and just fine, if you carefully read the project, the silver body that you see cut up I actually received like that, there are adjustments being made to it to make it look the way it does now. (A friend of mine thought it'd be smart to cut the roof and rear windshield off... -_- ) eventually he got rid of his Xmods and here we are, Ironically he did something stupid to a tC, and thats now gonna be my basher body for my lancer when I go to test drive.

Anyways, I promise they'll be an update soon, I didn't think anyone was gonna post in here till then lol, but since you are, I'll add some progress info heh.

oh and thanks again red for moving this here, and also for not closing it on the random post above.

Lucky Update #7:

Ok, So basically after many many hrs of sanding, I'm getting closer and closer to the final goal. The body has now been completely sanded and there are some imperfections, basically the passenger side is being a pain in the butt, also a couple little mess ups on the driver side. Here are the pics I hope you guys enjoy it, I think next update will be starting with the painting process.

Almost There ^_^ Enjoy

Yea... The putty I used on the front passenger side has to be reapplied.... I stripped the whole thing off the body because it had so many gaps/air pockets in it. I cleaned out the sideskirt fender and bumper and such and super glued it for now, once I re-apply the putty i'll resand and then finally go into painting. I'm thinking now of using a silver base for the Candy Red, thought thats also not official just yet.

UPDATE #8:

Ok ok, so I know last time I said next update would have paint on this, but I couldn't resist sharing this with you guys. I've first off had to strip the putty I used on the front passenger side as it was very screwy (air holes and such). Anyways, I layed down some more putty there and resanded it and it looks great.

As I was laying down the putty though, I thought about something in the design of this kit. If you guys look closely at the real kit you notice that the nose of the air**** is extended more than the one RS modeled for the BK. That's right, you guessed it, I extended the nose of the BK to match the real veilside kit.

Also, I mide the back cover for the convertible where the top goes down into, and its even hinged!, its currently held in place by tape but i'm gonna putty that off soon too. Anyways, enough talking I'll let the progress speak for itself (and yes its sitting on a chasis, its the 350Z chasis from the first updates all fixed up with a Team Redmade Rewound Motor).

Yes, I've been making the back cover out of the upgrades packaging. I've been using the plastic from the bodykit packaging and cutting/bending them into the proper shape. In the picture it sticks out a bit becuase it's actually hinged. When everything gets put in place i'll be finishing the shape for it and an actual cloth top for it. I've already bought some cloth to make it so we shall see.

Don't worry, I see what you're getting at cause of the pics I posted as a guide to the look i'm going for, but if you look at the orange 350Z with the actualy vielside kit you'll notice it has its fog lights there. Don't worry though, I'll post pics with and without foglights, I'm still planning on a way to mount the lights lol

Yea I was gonna use this chromlike silver I have as a base, it'll look nice. Also the body's not that thin, it might look like it in the pics, but this body feels about as rigid as a lancer body shell. It's tough no doubt.

Exactly, I remember him saying something along the lines that he's got a lot of things to do, and that for the time being he wasn't taking request. W/e the reason, lets try not to get off topic guys, he'll answer that eventually.

is primer manditory cuz i'v done a couple of pretty decent paintjobs myself and i used no primer, in fact i did not even sand

It's basically a cover for the layers of paint, also helps the adhesiveness of the paint, I'm not entirely sure so don't quote me on that directly. I just know it helps bond paint onto the surface. That's pretty helpful if you ask me... then again yea, idk lol.

you should throw a set of scion bk rims

You see this body?, This is the condition the body was in when I recieved it. I had someone that was "smart enough" to want to cool down his motor by cutting the hole you see (Keep in mind i cleaned it up by using a Xacto knife, before then the cuts were all curved and jagged).

Now if you'd rather drive your xmod around like that then be my guest, hell, send me yours and i'll even cut the body for you. I figure I'd salvage this into a fun project. Now I don't want you to think I'm mad at you because i understand the question could've been outta curiousity. However, read the whole thing before asking questions. The point of the putty is to seal the body kit pieces to the body (Which I want to do), plus to give it the shaping of the actualy converitble. Don't think it looks like that? well wait for the final product, thats what we call work in progress....

Sorry if I'm a little too 'harsh' in my response, but i'm serious if you even read it you wouldn't ask that question.

Still working that Sanding, any tips? I'm having such a hard tiem smoothing it out.

fieldfairy2
03-22-2008, 10:12 AM
SInce you need some sanding tips here wego:
1. for those small crack where paint and putty don't come out of: go to a home depot or somewhere like that and get a smaller dremmel cut off wheel and break it in half(it is kind of like a tooth pick but with sand paper on it)
2. You could take a little goof off on a paper towel and damp or rub it lightly on the area that is hard to sand.(it takes off some paint, so it is easier to get at the putty.) be careful. I wouldn't go this route for 3-5 days. THe older the paint (longer dried) is the less the goof off will take off.

hope these help. Very nice car.

Kaze

I'm not sure that I'm going to make an interior, I might just leave it be, and just create a top for it. It's strange because the Z's window line there sits on level with the electronics, literally that rear cover is right ontop of the motor.

Thanks again for hte support guys, Sorry I havne't worked on it much lately, School works been keeping me away from anything fun. Keep an eye out though, theres still lots to come.

Lol I'm glad to have re-introduced you to your love of Z's. For those of you interested, I'll probably be getting its silver base paint in the following weekend from now. If I'm lucky I might hit the full coat of red and proceed with the final stages of this project.

EDIT: on that note, I was wonder if I can see some different wheel styles on your Z's? I mean i know theres a few on the gallery, but those of you that painted it, what did you pick for you wheel style on your Z?

Red looks awsome. Try drawing an interior on a piece of paper and glue it on. Dont do that. What are you planning to make the top out of? I would suggest toothpicks for supporting the roof. When do you plan this to be done by? good luck.

I'm actually creating a Pivot Point right behind the door handles using the screws from the suspension (because it has that shaft portion near the head) and paperclips (I thought about tooth picks, but paperclips are easier to bend/shape) to construct the frame, if it's too weak i'll probably reinforce it with the putty (though idk how well that'll turn out). Anyways, aside from that, I'm using actualy black satin cloth lol. it was like $0.33 at walmart for 1/2 a yard of it (deffinately more than what I need, but hey, if I ever made a S2000, I could make it a convertible now too lol).

Finish date? Lets not Quote too much on me, but I'm thinking the car body will be done next weekend approx. Saturday 04/12/08. From there, depending on school (since I'm approaching finals quickly), Probably that week I'll make a top.

P.S. I love your sig, I gotta make a sexy one soon, perhaps after the project is done yes?

Yay! It's goning to be done soon! 33 cents for a yard of cloth is prety **** cheap... I think the putty will be too heavy and might collapse if the 350Z fell down off your TV, desk (or where ever you put it) I wouldnt reinforce it with putty. Mabye some more paperclips or toothpicks.

Well, I know some of you were expecting an update past this weekend, unfortunately I ran into some issues with the back piece and the putty so I'm gonna start that whole section over again. I did re-primer the areas I sanded and it looks about ready. Unfortunately, I dont know when I'll finish cause these next few weeks are Exams leading into Final Exams for me. So Hopefully they'll be updates soon. If not expect some Mid-May.

Great work Kaze :D

I wish I could give sanding help, but I don't have much experience with extensive body work. I have done a bunch of 1/10 scale stuff though (Lexan is easier to work with in some cases...)

For wheel styles you really have to go aftermarket: RS just didn't make many that looked good. HOWEVER I did like the ones that came with the 350 Z, and the ones of the NSX I put a silver lip on, and clear coated the matte black. Those were probably the best looking rims I've made (not saying much though)

good luck dude!

Update #10:

Ok!, So I know this has been dead for a little while and I appologize, Things took an unexpected turn and I had to pay attention to more important matters. Anyways! I present you guys with some progress and explanations on where i stand, Keep in mind this project's mostly done, anything addition is beyond what I was originally going for. So without further adieu, my current standing followed by a lil progress.

So most of you remember last time i was having some programs sanding the rear Top cover. In order to deal with the problems i was having I stripped off all the putty and started anew. The problem wasn't so much on puttying piece #1 (Refer to pics for piece locations), but the angle of piece #3 onto #2. I have an idea of how to go about this differently and it might work out better like this you know? Part #2 and #3 are on a hinge that will lift up and allow the top to collapse under it. Yes, that's right, I'm going for a collapseable top, it's doable so we'll see. Theres enough cloth for a mock up top too.

http://photos-c.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v290/113/68/54901767/n54901767_30822442_4312.jpg

Using Index cards i created a mock up of the 3 Pieces remaining to be added to the body. Once these peices are done, the project is basically done to my original vision.

This wasn't the only thing I worked on this past week either. I was thinking of a nice set of shoes for the ride. So after some nice 5 hours out in the sun with Tamiya Spray Paint, I present you the Wheels being used on this car. Hopefully these fit the style and you guys won't think it's too ricey lol... Oh and incase you can't tell thats Gun Metal. The silver took an interesting effect being sprayed over the gun metal, it looks more of a platinum/powder metal look.

Update #11:

Ok, so I know most of you weren't around when I started this project nearly a year ago. Of course those of you faithfull probably forgot about it seeing how the last time i mentioned it was in june and there wasn't much going on. However I've been working on this gradually and held back alot of info till i amounted a certain level of work on it. Here are some points i'd like to point out for this update:
-As it sits now the car is still incomplete, the same two areas remain in constant need of body work.
-Along with the collapseable cloth top, there is a partial interior planned for the car, this is later work however, and atm the dashboard is removed from the body and the top frame is complete.
-Yes the interior is JDM (meaning Right-Hand Drive)
-Chasis is a Gen 1, Motor is remaining as Team Redmade Standard, ESC is being planned as MiniZ and due to the restrictions from the dashboard, i'll be fitting a micro servo.
-Drivetrain will be RWD powered by Liths with a driveshaft removal mod.
-Candy red is the color and most of the small parts are done already, the hood is gonna get resprayed as its a darker shade and its orange peeled itself. The testors cans are really crapp imo but they're the only spray candy red i find. The cans have really low preassure, if I find tamiya candy red i might do that instead.... but we'll see, for now i'll stay the course.... anyways.... here's pics enjoy:

I LOVE 350Z's, I just don't like the Veilside body kit for them.. too many lines and too much going on, takes away from the clean smoothness.

Major props for the work though, that has to be very tedious and time consuming, and you're doing a great job considering the scale these are.

uhh at the moment it's made to manually fold away and back out, I want to figure out later if I have time on how to make it do it automatically, if I figure that out, I might use the same concept as the Motorized winch for the trucks, cept instead it'd be for the top.... i have no experience with any of that though, thats why its manual fold.

The story of building the chasis/interior fitting

that looks just AWSOME! you get it so it can drive without any issues now?

my issue wasn't driving it Kitt, it was power supply which i'm still trying to get... I think I have it figured out though, using the two AA lith-ion cells in parallel should be safe for the Z board. 3.7V with crapload of mAh

that looks pretty **** sweet...i like how you have the interior with the front and rear chassis parts connecting to it...looking good, can't wait to see the final product....

got it! if the lith-ions dont get too hot you could place them under the hood, or above the motor.

03-19-2009, 06:58 PM
well... if you read it, I'm going to make the cells look like "NOS" bottles in the "gutted" passenger seat...

With the interior now in there I'm trying to hide all the wires to make it look like a clean car, just like you don't see any of the wiring when you drive your car or in your parents car. It's basically going to look like a real car once i'm done.

As for under the hood i don't think i'll have space... I'm putting the CLL, Interior Glow, MiniZ board, and HS55 servo in there (yes I'm a master of abusing space) above the motor is kinda wastefull too... i mean look at the pics.. there's no space above the motor considering that this is a convertible going for a clean, "real" look

KITT222
03-19-2009, 07:07 PM
ah. again, got it. srry for not understanding. maybe custom make a cover like to make it look like NOS bottles, and also to cover the wires.

XMDrifter
03-19-2009, 10:22 PM
those would be huge nos bottles... as big as a whole seat...

Kaze
03-19-2009, 10:26 PM
Lol... well if you wanna go fast and you're gonna destroy the block... might as well make it count right lol? I really can't find any other way of fitting a power supply in here tbh, not even flat pack li-poly would fit.

himynamebebrian
03-19-2009, 10:27 PM
*cough* weight will be monstor on one side of this car with both liths on one side, *cought* you might want to think of something smoother.

Kaze
03-19-2009, 10:44 PM
How heavy are AA liths? they can't be that much... I guess i can screw around with some things... but... idk.. maybe a thin aluminum or steel or brass plate under the driver seat as a "mounting" bracket

Update #13: Styrene is my new best friend

So I've never played with styrene sheets like Credit cards etc etc on any of my projects... but today I saw why everyone uses them, they're a great base for body modding. Anyways enjoy the pics, get ready guys, i'm going for the finish.

Update #14: Almost There

So tonights focus, aside from the sanding on the new pieces of styrene added, is the rear Top Cover... To see what my Target is, below is a few screen shots taken from Nissans 360 Gallery on their web page. The 4 views show the top cover both opened and closed.

http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs119.snc1/4989_530286894200_54901767_31341748_4048938_n.jpg

This is the last and hardest piece that will be apart of the shell... its so hard I don't know how to procede in making it, As I told dontspamme, this is my 4th attempt at the top cover... Wish me luck.

As for the Main Shell itself, minus the top cover, i think I'm done with it. So Once the top cover is done, theres the last matter of interior fitting and bam! its a wrap.... enjoy the pics of my sanding and measuring.

you can see how level the piece is right now

It's been a long while since this project was put on hold. I'd be lying if said that it wasn't discouraging to constantly stare at this project without it being close to done.

Enjoy.

Now that's a long journey.... and it's only about to get longer as you can imagine. The biggest challenges faced so far being spacial issues/fitting all components in, but that has changed during my hiatus and low and behold a power supply has come to life during this time:

3.7V 240mAh 30C LiPo packs. They're 25mm long, 20mm wide, and 5mm thick, tiny little buggers.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/t1.0-9/1601480_927979045940_398214011_n.jpg

Power source hasn't been the only issue, trying to fit a whole interior in, i'm sure you can all imagine the space I have to give up inside one of these RC's... But there is hope, and a lot of planning on the surface. Though a custom chassis is imminent, it won't be a drastic change towards what everyone already knows and loves, it will however change all you thought possible on the Gen 1 platform. More to come later.
