I was wondering if anyones taken appart the Gen 1 Underglow Kit? I'm curious if any of you know which kind of LED is in there? For that matter where I can buy a similar one to swap them?

Basically I have an Idea that seems easy, just remove the LED from the underglow kit and place the same kind, but different color. If anyone can identify the type of LED or forward me to a thread where this has been answered I'll appreaciated it.

I'm not sure about the kinda, but it's gonna be a 1.5v LED, and take it out, go to RadioShack and find one of similar size. It's flat, but it can be smaller, same size or bigger. If it's bigger it's just to cut away some material, just be careful not to cut too much.

I didn't think the underglow kit actually had your regular run-of-the-mill type of LED's in it, my understanding of it was that it was two pieces of plastic that had metal contacts running through them that when you applied current to lit up, so:

--------------
| | X | | X | |
| | X | | X | |
| | X | | X | |
| | X | | X | |
| | X | | X | |
| | X | | X | |
--------------

With | X | indicating the strip of plastic that reacts the electrical current and lights up, I'm sure one of the electrical gurus can give us a better explanation but my understanding is you can not change the color of an undnerglow kit.

123vette, thats a nice job you did with it. You happen to know what kind of LED it is exactly, or should I just try to remove it and take it to RS? and you guys are saying its a 1.5v right?

Outta Curiousity, does the mod work similarly for the Gen 2? If thats the case I wouldn't mind picking up a couple blue and white LEDs and sending you both to do the mod and make tutorials, if you dont mind, i just need a little time to gather things.

yea it works exactly the same for both so sure i could make a tut

I think that those 5mm leds are too big.I used 3mm led in a smal piece of tube, see this:
http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL735/4679905/16995194/262943019.jpg

(in this model I used 2 led per neon)

If you want I can make any color neon, usin plugs that fit the xmods EB

did you replace just the led?
pay attention to the resistor, cuz working voltage of different color led could vary
:bigwink:
